MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR 2013-2014 was a remarkable year for the Appleton and thanks to all the hard work and effort from our staff, artists and volunteers, we succeeded in accomplishing a number of our goals. Our most significant achievement was being awarded accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums. The Appleton is among the 6 percent of museums in the United States that are accredited and among only 50 museums in Florida that have attained this recognition. Accreditation earns a museum national recognition for its commitment to excellence in all that it does: governance, collections stewardship, public programs, financial stability, high professional standards and continued institutional improvement. Our renovated lobby was unveiled in October and a Stairway to the Arts naming opportunity raised over $50,000 to support exhibitions and educational programs. In addition to the grand staircase, the renovation also included a new reception desk and improvements to the Appleton Store. Over 25,000 regional, national and international visitors enjoyed 18 exhibitions and participated in a full schedule of education programs that included workshops, summer art camps, monthly First Saturday family programs, an Educational Art Film series, the After Hours program and the third season of the Ocala Symphony Orchestra’s SoundArt Music Series. The popular Trips ’N’ Tours Program continued to take members and guests on adventures to culturally and historically significant destinations in Florida and beyond and our young professionals group, The Studio, relaunched in May. We welcomed several new staff members: Victoria Billig, assistant director of museum operations; Jen Boys, graphic design, web and public relations coordinator; E. Marie Fielding, education assistant; and Danuta Jacob, Rebecca Strange and Tammy McClary in Visitor Services. Mary Kraus, Advisory Council Member and Docent, made our vision a reality with the Daniel M. Kraus and Mary B. Kraus ARTSpace naming gift, which will be used to add more art-making stations, fund the ARTSpace Endowed Fund and initiate a Field Trip Bus Reimbursement Program to provide a means for school children to visit the museum, tour the galleries and create their own art in the ARTSpace.

FUNDRAISERS Canstruction Ocala 2014 Canstruction Ocala 2014 raised more than $8,000 for the Appleton’s exhibitions and educational programming. In this creative design-and-build competition, artists and community groups constructed fantastic large-scale structures made entirely of canned foods. After feeding the imagination of museum visitors, the can sculptures were dismantled and used to feed the community through three regional food banks – Brother’s Keeper, Daystar Life Center and Tri-County Outreach.

In the spring, the Appleton presented the ARTful Dining Series, bringing together great food, stimulating conversation and beautiful venues. Each of the five events had a specific theme, was hosted by community members and featured the artwork of several area artists, which was available for purchase. $11,000 in proceeds from the reservations, including 30 percent of art sales, directly benefitted the Appleton’s programming.

EDUCATION The Appleton’s education program presents a wide variety of art classes, lectures, workshops and outreach programs year round for all ages. A total of 646 visitors attended the museum’s Educational Art Film Series, a series of films shown on Sunday afternoons throughout the year. More than 145 students (ages 4-15) attended six weeks of summer art camp. And new this summer, a camp for ages 11-15. Other youth and family programs included nine First Saturday and two Family Day programs attended by 1,288 children and adults and hands-on after school tours and workshops attended by 377 students. Also this year, adult art programs were added, which included Drawing in the Gallery, a one-day monthly workshop held in the museum’s galleries, and Art 101, a series of one-day studio art workshops in the ARTSpace. The programs had a combined participation of 75 adults.

Students ages 7-12 made colorful banners in the Terrific Textiles summer camp workshop.

The Appleton Museum of Art presented several special programs during the 2013-2014 season, such as a musical performance by Chris Kahl, a musician with the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs State Touring Grant Program. Through this grant, the Appleton conducted free, off-site art education programs that reached 4,362 children, families and teachers at 13 area schools, community centers and libraries. The Appleton’s Artist in Residence, Michelle Stitzlein, and Museum Educator Mary Moore visited North Marion Middle School and worked with 240 students over two days to create a mural made entirely of recycled bottle caps. The nature-inspired mural is on display in the museum’s rotunda. After the installation of the mural, a naming contest was held where visitors could submit a name that they felt captured the spirit of the mural.
