KidsQuest is now in its tenth year

of service to the families in our community. We spent 2014 perfecting what we already know: how to serve the public as educators, both through programming opportunities and personal interactions. Year ten will be the last year in our current location, a time to take what we’ve learned in this first decade and use that knowledge to build the foundation for our future in downtown Bellevue. We look forward to 2015 as a year of preparation for the future and continued service to our patrons. 183,920 served in 2014 From Serving to Educating Based on findings from the grant-funded research project Partners in Play, KidsQuest reimagined the role of the museum’s Guest Experience Guides (GEG) and Coordinators (GEC). These staff members are the front line when it comes to interacting with KidsQuest’s nearly 200,000 visitors. Instead of focusing on customer service alone, training for these individuals is now more focused on play interaction and how children learn through play. Duties reflect that of classroom teachers: GEGs and GECs are in charge of facilitating exhibits, adjusting activities as needed, and determining what a specific exhibit area needs at any given time.

Arts Explosion!

Preparing for the Future

This year, KidsQuest focused on increasing programming, particularly in the arts. New special events like An Art-tastic Evening and Dinner & Dancing brought fine arts, music and dance to the museum, along with several community partnerships (Bellevue Arts Museum, Music Works Northwest, and Smart with Art have collaborated on Art-tastic Evening, while groups like Evergreen City Ballet have provided entertainment and dance lessons for Dinner & Dancing).

Every day KidsQuest gets closer to opening its new home in downtown Bellevue. The community has invested $8.4 million, and we are 66% of the way to our goal. In December KidsQuest officially purchased the former Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art, celebrating the occasion with a passing of the keys event attended by local business people, donors and politicians.

Free programs like Little Wing Music Time, Indian Dance Workshops and The Science of Art provide opportunities for children to explore new experiences they may not have been exposed to before. In the fall, KidsQuest also started the weekly Music, Movement and Me program to meet the growing demand for toddler classes. This program has sold out every session since it was introduced. In addition, KidsQuest continues to offer scores of STEM opportunities, regularly adding new programs like free LEGO Engineering and Preschool Computer Concepts classes.

New Exhibits & Exhibit Components

The 2015-17 Washington State capital budget has been finalized, securing a $2 million grant for KidsQuest from the Building for the Arts capital grants program. KidsQuest’s grant was one of the largest in this year’s recipient pool. KidsQuest’s new home will feature an outdoor space adjacent to a brand new water gallery (a folding glass wall lets the outside in), an On Pictured: Mike Hubbard, Stacy Graven, Putter Bert, John the Go Gallery featuring Stokes, Jennifer Robertson, Lynne Robinson, Jim Hutchinson, machines and moving objects, Cathy Habib, Alec Helzer a Tot Orchard for our littlest visitors, a newly imagined treehouse, the Bellevue Mercantile (based on the original Bellevue Mercantile that existed 100 years ago), a Cityscape Gallery for building and planning, and multiple classrooms.

Gingerbread Workshop Makeover KidsQuest’s annual Family Gingerbread House Workshops were an overwhelming success. The event was relocated to the Hyatt Regency in downtown Bellevue this year, and saw 50% more visitors than in 2013, and more than twice the number of visitors than in 2012. The change of dates and venue put KidsQuest right into the thick of Bellevue’s Magic Season, reinforcing our connection with the community.
