What a stellar year for the Katonah Museum of Art! We celebrated two important milestones and broke a number of attendance records. Childhood was commemorated with the popular Children Should Be Seen: The Image of the Child in American Picture-Book Art. The exhibition Shattering Glass threw back the curtain on the sheer wonder of this everyday material, while Here’s the Thing thrilled us with multiple singular sensations. Great strides continued to be taken with the Museum’s education programs, specifically the Hispanic outreach initiatives. Our children’s art classes remained fully subscribed with each new season. Exciting concerts, lectures, workshops, and travel programs kept our members entertained and educated throughout the year. During fiscal year 2007/08, the Museum maintained a healthy bottom line, finishing the year with a modest surplus. This could not have occurred without the Museum’s dedicated Board of Trustees, Board of Overseers, loyal volunteers, and staff. We are continually humbled by the generosity and support of our donors, who push us to create better programs and exhibitions. We are indebted to you beyond possible repayment. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all of the artists who contributed to our outstanding year. It is the art of the past and the art of the present that merge at the Katonah Museum to define our vibrant and far-reaching programs, and to help illuminate our course for the future.

Children Should Be Seen: The Image of the Child in American Picture-Book Art (July 1 – October 21, 2007) presented original illustrations by 83 artists in a comprehensive survey of the best children’s book art of the last ten years. Organized with the Eric Carle Museum, Children Should Be Seen marked the ten-year anniversary of the KMA Learning Center.

“…Shattering Glass: New Perspectives [is] a stunner of a show at the Katonah Museum of Art that enables viewers to consider the many meanings of transformation.” –Georgette Gouveia, The Journal News, December 3, 2007

Shattering Glass: New Perspectives (November 11, 2007 – February 24, 2008) shattered visitors’ expectations of glass: what it is, what it looks like, how it functions, and its perceived limitations of scale, texture, and malleability. Many of the featured artists created new, site-specific installations. The exhibition also shattered recent attendance records, with 13,500 visitors. Katonah

This year marked the 25th anniversary of the Young Artists exhibition, showcasing the extraordinary talents of seniors from the Museum’s member high schools. Young Artists ’08 (March 9 – 16, 2008) featured 300 students from 30 schools throughout Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, and Fairfield counties. The March opening reception broke the KMA’s single-day attendance record with over 1,100 visitors.

Here’s the Thing: The Single Object Still Life (March 30 – June 29, 2008) included over 60 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints that focused exclusively on everyday objects. Acclaimed realist painter Robert Cottingham was the guest curator. The accessible art he selected attracted more than 3,000 children, making it the most popular school exhibition to date.

The Project Gallery proved to be a valuable, versatile space throughout the year. It served as a comfortable reading room for families during Children Should Be Seen, it was transformed into a dramatic “underwater” sea of neon jellyfish for Shattering Glass, and, ultimately, it was returned to a traditional gallery for Jenny Lynn: The Object is Art (March 30 – June 29, 2008).

E KMA Outreach Programs

The Katonah Museum of Art has a strong history of working with underserved groups in Westchester County including hospitals, special education classes, and communitybased organizations that serve low-income populations. Visits are collaboratively planned to meet the physical, developmental, and educational needs of every group. Over the past five years, the KMA has developed and administered a Hispanic Outreach Initiative focusing on the educational needs of low-literacy, low-income children and families. These participants are predominantly new immigrants. The KMA is one of only a few museums in the country to develop collaborative programs designed specifically to address the literacy needs of a growing immigrant population. Our partners have grown from a single organization to the following seven: • The Tarrytowns Even Start Family Literacy Partnership • Neighbors Link, Mount Kisco • Mount Kisco Head Start • Mount Kisco Day Care • Ossining Children’s Center • Westchester Community College • Family Services of Westchester

om m u n ity

During the past several years the KMA education team has actively collaborated with new audiences while continuing to reach out to schools and service organizations. In 2007 we set a record in school group participation: over 6,000 students enjoyed guided visits to the Museum. They traveled from Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, and Fairfield Counties. The Museum visit includes lively discussions about art so that children gain a better understanding of the world and of themselves. The Education Department provides pre- and post-visit information designed to enhance classroom study. In an increasingly complex society, the Museum sees its goals – teaching visual literacy through encounters with original art – not just as an opportunity, but as a responsibility. To this end, the Museum has developed and nurtured indepth partnerships with local schools and early childhood and family literacy programs. We are proud to be a forum for ideas in the region. This year KMA educators were invited to share their successful collaborative programs at a number of museum and education conferences. Be sure to view the KMA video Learning Through Art on our website.

Thinking Through Art. The

KMA’s pilot program expands upon Museum visits, with four additional classroom sessions led by the KMA’s Writer-in-Residence. Now in its second year, participation has doubled to 700 students in grades 3 through 7 from four area schools. Our classroom programs this year saw an additional 2,800 participants. The Education Department develops, implements, and evaluates Thinking through Art student exhibition these programs with art and classroom teachers, librarians, and literacy specialists. Thinking Through Art represents a new chapter in museum education.

KMA Bus Fund. Budget cutbacks and high fuel costs have limited visitation by many schools, with the disadvantaged districts feeling the greatest impact. The KMA Bus Fund gave 1,500 children the opportunity to visit the Museum and participate in its programs this year.

Docents. Docents provide the backbone of educational programming. Expertly trained by the Education Department, our volunteer tour guides create welcoming, interactive, and informative entries into each new exhibition. Docent tours are offered daily at 2:30pm and are free with admission. THANK YOU! The KMA’s pilot programs have been funded with generous contributions from the Museum community. Without support, these in-depth partnerships in education would not be possible. The pilot programs and resources are highlighted in red text.

The Learning Center, which is open to the public freeof-charge, is the only interactive space in the community where children, with an adult caregiver, can drop in to explore, interpret, and create art. The Learning Center displays original art from children’s books, enhancing the museum experience for young visitors. Many of the illustrators visit the KMA for a reading, book signing, and the opportunity to meet their young fans. Popular classes like Tuesdays for Tots introduce children ages 3 to 5 to different art materials and processes. In Art Adventures (level 1), students in kindergarten through second grade examine and discuss work in the galleries and create their own art inspired by what they have learned. Added to the curriculum in 2007, Art Adventures (level 2) is designed for children in grades 3 through 6, and offers a unique blend of art history, art appreciation, and hands-on art projects.

ssociation

The mission of the Katonah Museum Artists Association (KMAA) is to give artists an opportunity to show and promote their work, to foster a supportive artistic community, and to provide professional and educational programs for the community-at-large.

The KMAA has 250 members, many of whom submitted work to Postcards from Within, an innovative exhibition and sale that took place in 2007. The offering proved so popular that it was repeated in the fall of 2008. With each new exhibition, one KMAA artist is selected to display his or her work at the Museum. This past year featured art by Tina Rohrer and Margaret Fox. Visions, the KMAA quarterly newsletter, informs members of exhibition opportunities outside the Museum and provides updates on current member activities.

The KMAA sponsored several programs in 2007/08. The Creative Mind, a series intended to expand the definition of an artist, featured “the king of rock tattoos” Paul Booth. Two ongoing programs, Artists Visit Artists and Artist Slide Night, invite KMAA artists to share work with their peers. All KMAA programs are free-of-charge to artist association members, and are open to the public for a small fee.
