I. Outlines for Chapters 1-3 (60 points)  Read and outline chapters 1-3 in your textbook, The American Pageant, using the

attached objectives. I AM NOT LOOKING FOR A SPECIFIC OUTLINE FORMAT, just evidence that you have read THE BOOK and understand the objectives and material. You may use a formal outline format or an informal format, but take care to include key terms/people/events with explanations. (You will have a reading quiz for every chapter and you may use your outlines on the reading quiz. Be sure to include enough detail that it will be helpful to you on these quizzes.)  I have attached an example of the first objective of chapter one. You do not have to outline this objective since I have done it for you. Please read through it so you are aware of my expectations.  Guideline per objective: Please write the objective at the beginning of every outline. Length should be between half a page to a page, depending on your handwriting and the format you use.  Outlines will be evaluated on completion and thoroughness. I will be looking for specific, important information that is critical in understanding the objectives.

II. Essay (20 points)  AP U.S. History requires a specific set of essay writing skills. To give you an idea of what to expect you need to answer the following question in essay format.  Essay Guidelines: You need to provide a prewrite for your essay. This is evidence that you thought about how you were going to answer the question before you started writing. (Examples include brief outlines, lists of information, graphic organizers, charts, etc.) Your essay should include a thesis statement that is underlined and specific historical information with explanations to back up your ideas. There are no length requirements in AP U.S. History with regards to essays, but your initial essays should be between one and two pages (depending on your handwriting) and should be long enough to sufficiently answer all parts of the question.  The essay will be evaluated on your prewrite (4 points), thesis statement (5 points), mechanics and organization (3 points), and your use of historical information (8 points).

Essay question: Analyze the impact of geography and the environment on the development of at least TWO different regions of the English colonies along the Atlantic coast in the 17th and 18th centuries. [New England, Middle Colonies, Southern Colonies] III. Short Answer Questions (10 points, 5 points each)  Short answer questions are part of the APUSH exam and will be included on this year’s tests. To help you get familiar with these types of questions, you will answer two short answer questions.  Short Answer Question Guidelines: All APUSH short answer questions will ask you to do three things, regardless of how many parts there are to the question. Answers should be written in clear and complete sentences and include specific historical information to support your ideas. Be sure to answer questions completely.  Short answer questions will be evaluated on completion and thoroughness. I will be looking for strong explanations and specific historical information that indicates your understanding of the material and supports your answers.

EVERYTHING MUST BE HANDWRITTEN IN BLUE OR BLACK INK! Anything that is typed will not be graded. Points will be deducted for writing in pencil.

IV. U.S. Map (10 points)  See attached assignment sheet.  You will have a map quiz the first week of school.  Maps will be evaluated on neatness and thoroughness.

V. Extra Credit: Project/Essay – History in Your Own Backyard (maximum of 10 points extra credit)  We live in one of the most historic states in our country and are surrounded by our nation’s history. Take advantage of this to visit one historical site this summer.  Write (HANDWRITTEN IN BLUE OR BLACK INK) a one-page essay on the following: o Where you visited (the site’s name and location) o Your experience at the historical site (what did you do? what did you see? what interested you?) o Why this historical site is significant to U.S. history  Include at least one picture, brochure, or flyer from your adventure (these can be as simple as a printed digital photo or a brochure you picked up) – this must be turned in with your essay for you to receive points!  Try this website for places really close to home: o Petersburg Area Regional Tourism (http://www.petersburgarea.org/)  Essays will be evaluated on content, including historical significance (8 points) and a picture, brochure or flyer (2 points).
