Every year people ask me which are THE shows to see at Anywhere Theatre Festival. I won’t do that, but I will tell you what to see at Anywhere Theatre Festival. Confused? Read on.
It’s performance … but not as you know it.
Anywhere Theatre Festival Founder
Anywhere Theatre Festival is unlike any other festival of performances in the world. It doesn’t have a fence with an entry pass, you won’t find it in theatres and the theatre genre is only half of it, with circus, dance, music, poetry, comedy and installations. The word that is key and unequivocal is “Anywhere”. Anywhere more than any other festival is a festival for performers and audiences. It is a festival where surprise and exploration is everywhere and this gets me back to answering the original question. If I was to recommend how to choose I would say this: choose something that speaks to you from the program, pick regardless of the genre (we haven’t included genres so you don’t have a choice), pick locations you’d like to visit and when all else fails, go to the grid and pick randomly on a day you want to go. The last approach has worked a treat for me more times than I’d like to admit. What you will find is a show so intimate and engaging that no experience in a custom built theatre with seamless sound cues and a team of technicians can beat. The theatre director Peter Brook once wrote “There is no technical effect in theatre that can ever be as interesting as an actor right in front of you.” Anywhere is where you find that actor, dancer, circus artist, musician, poet, cabaret artist right in front of you and an audience you will know by the end of the show.
Sunshine Coast and Noosa Anywhere Theatre Festival Directors We are thrilled once again to present the Sunshine Coast and Noosa contribution to Anywhere Theatre Festival program. In only its second year on the Coast, you only need to look at the size, diversity and quality of new works to know this region and its performers have fully embraced the challenge of presenting in non-traditional spaces. We dare you to dip your toes in the water of this year’s program and be prepared to splash around to truly experience performance where you least expect it. Twice the size of it’s inaugural year, we’ve got shows that will make you laugh, make you cry and make you feel better about the world. We’ll take you out of your comfort zone and into a forest, onto a river ferry, into a cave, beside a lake, near a railway station, in a barber shop, into a swimming pool or a backyard. We’ll have you commit murder of the mysterious kind, watch books come to life, hear instruments you never thought possible, listen to poetry to warm your heart, walk the streets in search of songs and adventurous women, bring a cushion for some Shakespeare, watch local stories on a deck overlooking the ocean, share live art or rock out to a 13 piece mix tape in a car park. There IS something for everyone. So many people to thank – performers, producers, supporting businesses, local council, artist organisations and you the audience! Explore, be adventurous and you will be richly rewarded this May.
Many things have changed in the eight years I have held the reins of Anywhere Theatre Festival, but the thing that never changes is seeing the amazement and pleasure from audiences and performers coming to create a theatrical experience in a place they shouldn’t be. On behalf of everyone who makes Anywhere happen - the creatives, supporters, volunteers, hosts and financial supporters of the festival - thank you and enjoy!

Welcome To Anywhere Theatre Festival
Leeanne Enoch MP
Councillor Graham Quirk
Councillor Tony Wellington
Councillor Mark Jamieson
The Anywhere Theatre Festival is a unique event.
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 Anywhere Theatre Festival.
Noosa Shire has long been known as a hub for creative industries, especially the performing arts. Theatre events and arts festivals are a staple diet for many Noosa residents. Heck, we’re even home to Australia’s best known playwright!
Sunshine Coast Council is proud to support the Anywhere Theatre Festival in its second year as part of our vibrant region.
Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Minister for Science and Minister for the Arts
From 10-27 May, everyday locations and unexpected spaces across South East Queensland will provide the backdrop for theatre events held anywhere but in a theatre. More than 500 artists and arts workers will present around 370 diverse performances across the 17 days of the 2018 festival, with drama, circus, comedy, dance, story-telling and poetry all popping up in surprising places. The Queensland Government supports the Anywhere Theatre Festival through the Organisations Fund. I am also delighted that the Festival received vital funding through the Queensland Arts Showcase Program to support its Sunshine Coast programming for the second successive year.
The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of Brisbane
The Anywhere Theatre Festival is one of more than 50,000 annual markets, festivals and events that Brisbane City Council helps deliver. It illustrates the inclusiveness and uniqueness of Brisbane’s communities and the lifestyle and leisure opportunities on offer. With more than 370 performances held across three weeks, this festival encourages audiences to experience the creative side of our city in some unexpected venues. I would like to extend my best wishes to the organisers and all the performers taking part in this exciting festival, and I trust you will enjoy the events on offer.
Mayor of Noosa Council
That’s why Noosa Council is proud to support the Anywhere Theatre Festival. This Festival provides an important outlet for emerging and independent performing artists to both develop their skills and present performances in excitingly different ways. Locals and visitors will get an opportunity to experience theatre events in unexpected places, from barbershops to the Noosa Ferry. If ever there was proof of Shakespeare’s maxim that “all the world’s a stage” it is the Anywhere Theatre Festival. Enjoy!
Mayor of Sunshine Coast Council
Council values the role that the arts and our local artists continue to play in contributing to a healthy, smart, creative Sunshine Coast community. Providing support for independent creative endeavours, such as this growing national festival, offers our local residents and many visitors new and exciting ways to experience the arts. I encourage everyone to get out and discover new venues, unexpected locations and enjoy what our talented local performers and producers have to offer.
The Festival’s innovative approach to delivering incredible arts experiences to Queensland communities is realised through local business partnerships that support new works, nurture local talent and unite communities. Congratulations to the organisers of the 2018 Anywhere Theatre Festival, and I wish all participants a successful season.

Queensland Government
For eight years, Anywhere Theatre Festival has worked with the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland to create opportunities for local independent artists to present work, to demonstrate how the arts can add value to local businesses and provide unique cultural (and let’s not forget, fun) experiences anywhere but a theatre. Involvement represents more than just financial support; the team at Arts Queensland have consistently encouraged us to strive for better governance, growth and helped us to hone our creative business model to make Anywhere Theatre Festival better than it otherwise could be.
Brisbane, Noosa and Sunshine Coast Council
We’d like to say a huge thank you to Brisbane City Council for financially supporting this year’s festival, Noosa Council for supporting us in our second year in Noosa and Sunshine Coast Council for their financial support of the 9 December Participants Workshop, an integral part of the professional development for all artists in this year’s Anywhere Theatre Festival.
Brisbane Marketing
Anywhere Theatre Festival would like to thank Brisbane Marketing for their ongoing support in ensuring the success of the festival and making it easy to perform.
Scenestr
scenestr is our major media partner and we couldn’t be more excited. scenestr delivers unparalleled coverage of the arts via a market-leading, national network of street press and digital titles. They’ll be first with all the Anywhere Theatre Festival news, of course, along with all things entertainment happening in South East Queensland.
Communify
Communify is an independent, profit-for-good organisation. Locally-based, it provides opportunities for people, whatever their stage of life, to join activities that are interesting, stimulating and who support an active, healthy and socially connected life. This year we have partnered with Communify so artists can access free rehearsal space and reduced rates on other spaces as well as including some of the amazing activities that happen every week
Show Partners
We’d like to do a very special shout out to all the businesses and people who have volunteered their spaces for Anywhere Theatre Festival performers. We’d also like to thank everyone who registered their space and didn’t get a show. Every host partner and logo can be found on the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast map pages.
Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF)
Many shows performing in the Sunshine Coast and Noosa regions have been supported by a RADF Grant and we would like to thank Noosa Council, Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government. To our fearless and considerate volunteer board of Helen Astbury, Alex Podger, Megan Lavender, Gary McDonald, Howard Duggan and Amanda Ralph. We’d also like to thank our audience - you - who advocate on our behalf every time you purchase a ticket, talk about the independent producers or volunteer your time for the independent sector.
See Shows and Explore Locations Check out the program, get some friends and family together and get to a show or two in an interesting location!
Donate We don’t charge a ticketing fee because we think charging $5 just so you can print out your own ticket is a bit rich. Instead, if you like what we are doing you can make a tax deductible donation when you purchase your ticket at www.anywhere.is.
Photograph Register as an Anywhere Photographer and we will set you up to take rehearsal or show photographs. Your photos are invaluable for independent performers to promote their work after the festival.
Review Shows Apply to be a reviewer. We’ll provide tickets for you to see shows and you publish your reviews direct to our web site (and your own).
Volunteer There are over a hundred independent performers presenting work at this year’s Anywhere Theatre Festival and they are always looking for people to help out in small or big ways.

It’s Not Easy Being Green A quirky and high energy cabaret about highs and lows!
The Laramie Project A gay fantasia of small town filth The town of Laramie values the tradition of “live and let live”. 19 years ago their values were questioned when a student was bashed and left to die. At 21, Mathew Shepard became the poster boy for LGBT+ rights, shining a light into the darkness that’s beneath every town.
Direct from the 2018 Adelaide Fringe Festival, this high-energy, emotionally charged cabaret challenges the perception that ‘mental illness’ is a dirty word. It’s about mental wellness! Wilde Life
Very Stable Geniuses
Presented by Turning Tricks
Presented by 3bCreative
An astonishing evening of sleight of brain
An hilarious study of an unnaturally “Wilde” species
Chess-playing automata, mathematical pigs and super-memory. These were the men and women (and sometimes animals) who baffled the world with seemingly impossible mental feats.
Following a successful “lecture” at Adelaide Zoo as part of the Fringe, the show’s cast again don spectacular plumage to mimic the mating habits of an extinct and curious species - the Victorian Upper class.
This year, magician Pete Booth and mentalist Sean Mergard return to recreate history’s most bizarre acts of mental dexterity and cognitive capacity. Featuring live jazz arranged by Ken McLean, Very Stable Geniuses will take you on a journey of the extraordinary exploits of the mind.
Speckled with one liners and cutting observations from the era’s grandest old bird, Oscar Wilde aka “The Irish Peacock”, the performance is a humorous and very informative examination of the London Season and its mating rituals.
“A mind-boggling fusion of comedy, magic and storytelling.” – The Weekend Edition n FSE Warehouse, 2a Staple Street, Seventeen Mile Rocks 11-13, 19, 20 May @ 7.30pm / 70m / $25 / 15+

Pepper Camden, pop star-slash-actor has been caught in another scandal and the Brisbane Chapter of the PCPSSAFC MUST DECIDE if she’s finally gone too far.
Kathleen McArthur and Judith Wright were two ‘wild’ women whose art and artistry extended beyond their painting and poetry to leading some of Australia’s early environmental campaigns. Featuring the talents of renowned actors Kate Wilson and Rainee Skinner, the ‘Wildflowering’ script reveals the trials and achievements of these pioneering artist/activists.
