Chairman’s Message During the year, KCSSC managed to overcome many difficulties such as inadequate funding and the lack of full-time staff. We have seen an increase in the number of seniors participating in the activities that we organized. Many adult children brought their parents to participate in KCSSC’s activities after learning about KCSSC through our website. Feedback has shown that our seniors feel at home in KCSSC. We are very pleased that KCSSC has achieved its direction and goal by providing seniors with a friendly environment that they can call home. Last year, KCSSC volunteer groups played a significant role in organizing community events. They took the initiative to plan and implement care groups to help new mothers during their confinement, looking after young children, preparing and sending food to those who are sick, and keeping company with seniors. We were touched by their actions because they have exceeded their initial volunteer goals. We want to sincerely thank all these volunteers for their efforts to bring cheer and provide a lifeline to those in need. 2013 was an eventful year that saw our seniors being involved in many community activities such as the Spring Community Clean-up events, attending the MPP’s Summer Barn Dance, and even participating in a Seniors’ Health Forum at a seniors residence in the city. The full list can be found in the Activities Gallery page. We also integrated into mainstream society by being involved in volunteer activities in our communities, such as the Kanata July 1st Canada Day at the Walter Baker Park and actively helping at T&T Supermarket’s Summer Carnival, as well as collaborating with the Kanata North Community Association to set up a Community Garden in Kanata North. We also offered our services in the Hazeldean and Stittsville Public Libraries by conducting cultural outreach programs like tea ceremony demonstrations and calligraphy summer camps for children. Our activities, which drew good crowds, were reported in the local English newspapers. Deserving special mention was the true spirit of volunteerism at the Chinese New Year of the Horse Year celebration on February 2nd this year. I would like to use this opportunity to sincerely thank our 120 volunteers, whose ages ranged from 13 to 80, who demonstrated exceptional organizational skills and dedication from the word go. It began in September 2013 with brainstorming sessions, fundraising, booking the venue, rental of the stage and sound system, sale of food items, silent auction and the list goes on. On the eve of the event, volunteers, including a heavily pregnant mother, braved the snow to put last minute touches to the venue. There were more than 1,300 participants at the event, which was double the figure of 2013. All this was the result of the desire of the Kanata Chinese community to reach out to the diverse Canadian multicultural society and celebrate this festivity as one people. In summary, I am exceedingly proud of our achievements through the involvement of our dedicated volunteers and friends, who are the pillars of our strength. Let us work together to render sustenance to our seniors, while at the same time helping them integrate into Canadian society. I am confident that all this is possible with your unfailing dedication and support. Sun Hai Bao Chairman 5

Volunteerism and Community Involvement -
Breaking Isolation and Increasing Social Interaction for Chinese Seniors
KCSSC continued its community volunteering work with Chinese seniors. After more than one year of cultivation in the concept of volunteerism, more and more Chinese seniors are ready to take the initiative and become a community volunteer. They organized social activities and trips for the social group, formed peer support groups among themselves, and helped each other to overcome isolation. Although the language barrier is still an issue for most of the seniors, they have conquered their fear and become an active community member. Because of the efforts of the volunteers the community became vibrant which helped to create a sense of belonging for the seniors. KCSSC ,

Better Neighborhoods Project -
Asian Night Market and North Kanata Community Garden
KCSSC worked with the Better Neighbourhoods’ Office of the City of Ottawa to plan two projects. Although the Asian Night Market project did not materialize, KCSSC had an opportunity to work with a local business – T & T Supermarket – at their 2013 Summer Carnival Event. We helped to arrange a media interview with the manager of the store, and provided performances by our seniors on stage as well as volunteering to help set up and take down the tents and booths. Through this project, we were able to build a cordial working relationship with T&T Supermarket and in return they provided significant support for our 2014 Chinese New Year celebration event. The North Kanata Community launched a community garden in the North Kanata community. The partnership between Chinese seniors and the local Community Association helped Chinese seniors interact with other garden lovers. The garden volunteers, which included two seniors who are ill, helped to plant, water and maintain the plots. The seniors are happy with gardening and they feel a sense of satisfaction when they see the crops growing. 2013

Mental Health Promotion for Ethno-Cultural Seniors -
Supporting Social Participation and Inclusion of Seniors
This project was sponsored by the New Horizons For Seniors Program (NHSP) Grant. The goal of this project is to encourage seniors and their families to gain a better understanding of mental health issues, and take steps to improve their overall health and well-being. We recruited more than one hundred seniors and members to take part in this survey. At the end of this project, we also organized two community celebration events for seniors to practice their volunteering skills. Many of them have never been a volunteer before and they were very happy to gain some volunteer experience. They also expressed their willingness to continue as a volunteer in the future. At the end of this project, a report was produced and was presented at the Social Planning Council of Ottawa’s 2014 AGM. 100 2014

Celebrating Chinese New Year of the Horse -
Breaking Isolation and Bridging Gaps in Mutual Understanding among Seniors of all Origins in Kanata
On February 2, 2014, the Kanata Chinese Seniors Support Centre (KCSSC) held a Chinese New Year of the Horse Celebration at the newly-constructed Richcraft Recreation Complex in Kanata. An estimated 1,000 participants from the Kanata neighbourhood communities, diverse in cultural background, attended the event. More than 100 volunteers, ranging in age from 13 to 80 assisted with such tasks as setting up and decorating the venue, greeting guests, tending booths, stage-management, and cooking in the kitchen. The event, which was a great success, brought the community together to celebrate and to learn more about the Chinese New Year. 2014
