STRONGER TOGETHER TO CURE T1D TRSA’S ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITS continues its traditions of honoring TRSA’s most dedicated volunteers and supporting charities by combining these two recognitions. We will acknowledge outgoing TRSA Chair Jim Doro and his wife Mary by collecting donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in the name of their 2-year-old grandson, Michael C. Doro. Michael has Type 1 diabetes (T1D), which affects nearly 3 million Americans, many of them children. T1D requires regular insulin injections based on constant and careful monitoring of blood glucose and carbohydrate intake to avoid dangerous high or low blood glucose levels. JDRF is implementing a strategic plan including clinical trials to foster a continuous flow of life-changing therapies and ultimately a cure for T1D. Donate with your conference registration; see form included in this brochure.

KEYNOTE S N O I T A T N E S E R P Captain Richard Phillips Subject of 2013 Oscar-nominated film; author, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea

Hero of the High Seas Tuesday, Sept. 30, 1–2 pm Captain Phillips (real-life hero of the eponymous film starring Tom Hanks) will recount his 2009 story of courage and savvy under intense pressure when Somali pirates boarded his ship off the African coast. Eventually they dropped their guns when provided with an escape boat with him as a human shield against U.S. forces that would pursue them after they set off. On that lifeboat, Captain Phillips didn’t think of himself as a hostage, playing “mind games” on his captors and avoiding the Navy SEAL gunfire that eliminated them.
