More than 1,000 United Methodists from around the state gathered at Centenary College in Shreveport June 3-6 for the 2012 Annual Conference. Worship services and teaching sessions throughout the event were centered on the conference theme, “Building Up Leaders for Building Up the World.” Ephesians 4:11-12 served as this year’s inspirational scripture. This year’s theme was the fourth in the quadrennium that supports the Four Areas of Focus, the priority ministry areas of The United Methodist Church

and of the Louisiana Conference. Our need for developing principled Christian leaders was addressed during three guest teaching sessions led by Rev. Adam Hamilton, founding pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in the Kansas City area. For coverage of his presentations, visit the Louisiana Conference website at www.laumc.org A special report was presented to the session in regard to conference funding for the future. The report came from the Strategic Vitality Task Force in coopera-

tion with the Conference Council on Finance and Administration. For complete coverage and results of that report visit www.la-umc.org Our continued concern for the elimination of global diseases was woven throughout the conference, particularly as delegates celebrated the April 21st Louisiana Skeeter Run, when more than 2,000 volunteers, walkers and runners participated in eight runs throughout the state to raise funds and awareness for

Conference creates instructional manual and DVD on HIV testing

The Global Health Initiative of the Louisiana Annual Conference has created a manual, above, and an instructional DVD that can be downloaded and used to organize an HIV testing event. Participants in a service of remembrance held Dec. 1 in Baton Rouge, La. place pebbles in a basket, top left, in memory of a loved one who has died of complications from HIV/AIDS. Pictured at the same 2011 event, Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden speaks about the pandemic during a press conference. Baton Rouge ranks second in the nation in HIV/AIDS cases.

United Methodist churches and conferences can now easily organize an HIV testing event with the assistance of a manual and instructional DVD developed by the Louisiana Annual Conference. Spearheaded by members of the conference Global Health Initiative, the organizational tools were created with the assistance of a grant provided by the General Board of Global Ministries. “The Louisiana Conference has taken a deep interest in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Since our inaugural testing event launched in the fall of 2009, United Methodist churches statewide have expanded testing efforts and have continued to hold World AIDS Day events. Creating the manual and DVD allows us to share the system we have developed, making the process easier for other conferences,” said Margaret Johnson, chair for the initiative. The instructional tools, produced with the help of professional editors and video producers, answer questions about volunteer recruitment and training, which agencies to get involved, and how to promote your HIV testing event. “Most importantly, the manual encourages ecumenical involvement because it is important to have the faith community working together. Through the involvement of the church, we can lift the stigma associated with HIV testing and help to save lives,” said Johnson. United Methodists in Louisiana have

been honored as leaders in efforts both to educate people about AIDS and help lead the way to eliminating the disease in their state. The Louisiana Annual Conference received one of five inaugural United Methodist Global AIDS Leadership Awards during the third international Lighten the Burden Conference in October of . Other honorees included former President George W. and Laura Bush, retired United Methodist Bishop “Fritz” and Etta Mae Mutti, the Rev. Donald Messer and Dr. Musa Dube. “I am inspired by the efforts of United Methodists throughout the Louisiana Conference as they do their part to help eliminate this killer disease,” said Bishop William W. Hutchinson, who leads the conference. The Honorable Kip Holden, mayor of Baton Rouge, La., offered words of challenge and hope during a Louisiana Conference sponsored World AIDS Day event Dec. 1, 2011. “AIDS is the Goliath, but we are the Davids that will slay this devastating disease,” said Holden during a press conference held prior to the ecumenical service held in Baton Rouge, La. Organized by the conference Global Health Initiative, the event was one of four World AIDS Day events held statewide last December. Other services took place in Lake Charles, New Orleans and Shreveport. Most surprising to many of those in

attendance were some alarming statistics about the disease and the city of Baton Rouge. “We have the second-highest number of HIV/AIDS cases among American cities. More than 3,000 people have died of AIDS in Baton Rouge since these statistics were gathered,” said Jeff Stafford, event coordinator and member for First United Methodist Church.

The Louisiana Annual Conference wants to continue putting faces on the disease, encouraging people to better understand HIV/AIDS and, perhaps, to join the fight. The manual can be downloaded for use by visiting www.la-umc.org The DVD is in postproduction and will be available for downloading in several weeks.

Katy Build result of unique community partnership for Asbury UMC In a unique community partnership, Asbury United Methodist Church in Bossier City has joined with The Fuller Center for Housing to build the 45th Fuller Center home and the first Fuller Center home in Bossier City. The build is in memory of Katy Watkins, a former youth member of Asbury UMC. Angela Pfanner, program director for Asbury UMChurch, said, “The founding mission of Asbury UMC was based on faith, hope and love. May this foundation, along with the spirit of Katy and the commitment of Fuller Center, be the beginning of a new era in the Bossier City community and the life of Asbury United Methodist Church.” As a youth member of Asbury UMC, Katy, was a vibrant part of the youth program and mission outreach. She participated in Weekend of the Cross in the Shreveport District and the youth’s annual summer mission to the Navajo nation. Following Hurricane Katrina, the Asbury youth joined the church in monthly missions to New Orleans for recovery assistance. Katy was one of the church leaders that moved and motivated the youth to change their 16-year summer mission from Arizona to New Orleans. As Katy would put it, “We need to help those in our own backyard.” It wasn’t an easy position for a young person to take, but Katy never backed down. Katy died as a result of injuries in a motor vehicle accident during her junior year in high school. The “Katy Build” house will be located on Nina Street in the McCall Subdivision on property donated to the Fuller Center.

Through these efforts, The Fuller Center for Housing continues the ministry of transforming lives and communities. Their partner, Asbury United Methodist Church will work through its members, the Watkins family and community friends to sponsor the home in memory of Katy Watkins. “This is exciting and powerful! I would challenge any group or individuals who want to see how faith-based organizations make a difference to become a partner in this project. This is a great opportunity to show your love for your fellow man and honor a young lady that was a gift to others,” said Lee A. Jeter, Sr., executive director of The Fuller Center for Housing of Northwest Louisiana. Ground breaking is scheduled for June 9 at 7:30 a.m. Persons who would like to contribute to the Katy Watkins Legacy Build are asked to call The Fuller Center office at (318) 221-7474 or send an email to [email protected]. or contact Angela Pfanner at Asbury UMC, (318) 746-5349.

‘Six Missions in a Day’ is outgrowth of 2011 conference ‘Day of Caring’

As an outgrowth of 2011’s “Day of Caring,” Asbury United Methodist Church in Bossier City recently sponsored “Six Missions in a Day.” Pictured are the confirmation class which filled cleaning buckets for UMCOR Sager Brown in Baldwin.

As part of the denominational initiative known as Change the World, the Louisiana Annual Conference sponsored “A Day of Caring” on May 14, 2011. More than 210 Louisiana churches participated in the event by sponsoring a variety of projects ministering to the poor and underserved of their respective communities. The conference wide Change the World event for 2012 was the Louisiana Skeeter Run, held April 21 in eight cities statewide to raise funds and awareness for Imagine No Malaria. As an outgrowth of 2011’s “Day of Caring,” Asbury United Methodist Church in Bossier City recently sponsored “Six Missions in a Day.” The day was designed to involve as many church members as possible in a mission experience. More than 75 people participated in the missions, with volunteers ranging from 9 – 80 years of age. Mission experiences included: *Children from the church visited a private animal shelter and working with the coordinators there to care for the animals awaiting adoption. *The confirmation class shopped and filled 15 cleaning buckets for UMCOR Sager Brown in Baldwin, La. *Church youth participated in the annu-

al community Day of Light with children participating in the VOA Lighthouse program. The Day of Light included a variety of blow-up jumpers and water slides with hotdogs and soda for lunch. *United Methodist Men built wheelchair ramps with the Shreveport District ramp-building team. *Senior adults of the church volunteered at the Northwest Louisiana Foodbank and enjoyed lunch afterwards. *All other adults not participating with one of the other missions joined the church’s Renesting program. Renesting is an ongoing mission of Asbury UMC which collects gently used furniture and then uses the items to furnish and decorate homes for those transitioning from homelessness into a new residence. Plans are being formulated for next year’s mission experience, expanding and moving toward a goal of even broader involvement.
