EXECUTIVE SUMMARY “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” Nelson Mandela

When AIDGLOBAL was founded 8 years ago its main focus of action was and still is, the promotion of education for active citizenship and a more just, equitable world. Recognizing their importance in regards to social progress, AIDGLOBAL established two priority areas of action: Education for Global Citizenship in the national territory and Cooperation for Development in deprived regions overseas.

tely after that AIDGLOBAL initiated the campaign "Books for Chókwè" created to collect 5000 books, which was a success.

COOPERATION FOR DEVELOPMENT

In the area of Cooperation for Development, AIDGLOBAL has been supporting public libraries and more recently, the creation of school libraries, and in 2013 it consolidated its presence in Mozambique, particularly in the Gaza Province, where AIDGLOBAL has had a delegation since 2008. During these activities, the team on the ground carried out the monitoring of the public and school libraries supported under the "Passport for Reading" program. Simultaneously, there was an intensive work of diagnosis between students, parents and teachers about the quality of education in order to identify new needs for the target people within the projects. With the goal of one book per student, the organization started the year 2013 with the planning of what would be the third container of books sent by AIDGLOBAL to Mozambique. This work was, however, suddenly interrupted by floods that ravaged the south of the Mozambique earlier this year, causing loss of life, movement of the Mozambican population to temporary camps and serious material damage to infrastructure and buildings. The gravity of the situation, which directly affected the families of our employees in the field led AIDGLOBAL to launch a mobilization campaign among the Portuguese population named Emergency Fund for Mozambique to assist with basic necessities to families affected by heavy rains, even though the emergency was not in an area in which AIDGLOBAL normally works. The amount of money raised through individual donations was fully used for the purchase of food, water, clothing and medicines that were delivered personally by our manager in Mozambique, Castigo Tchume, to people housed in temporary tents raised by the Red Cross. This unfortunate situation gave rise to another campaign launched in 2013 to recover the Public local library of Chókwè, completely destroyed in the aforementioned events in the beginning of the year. This library had been enhanced in 2009 with more than two thousand books and multiple computers, following the donations achieved at the time. Students from nearby schools and adults residents in the district benefitted from all that material, but it was irreversibly destroyed during the floods. This unexpected fact changed the planning of AIDGLOBAL. It decided to launch the campaign

"Books for Chókwe" during the Book fair of Lisbon in the spring, with the LeYa publishing group, to collect donations, while the organization promoted the books and study materials among partner companies, other institutions, its members, volunteers and friends. The result at the end of the year was more than 5,000 copies, furniture and other materials to support teachers. It was ready to be packed and transported and distributed in Mozambique in the year 2014 by libraries and schools supported by AIDGLOBAL, with special attention to the Municipal Library Chókwè. This success was due to hundreds of individual donations that joined the cause and other large companies such as Portugal Telecom, CTT- Correios de Portugal, LeYa, Luso-American Foundation, Junta de Frequesia de Santa Maria dos Olivais and the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, who contributed. With the arrival of this container AIDGLOBAL will contribute to improve the conditions of orphans supported by Reencontro Association, in the south of Mozambique, thanks to donations from employees of Portugal Telecom and TAP. In the first case they raised a significant number of toys and a few tens of blankets, given by the Voluntários com Asas.

EDUCATION FOR GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

The Education for Global Citizenship aims to raise awareness in children, youth and adults for the cause of inequalities in the world, fostering in them the need to act in favor of a more just and sustainable world. AIDGLOBAL has to act in this area, focusing on Education for Development, promoting activities with teachers and students from schools of Lisbon and Loures, through the project "Educate to Cooperate" that to date has involved more than 2,300 students in 11 centers of teaching.

Also, under the "Educate to Cooperate" project, in October 2013, we celebrated the first seminar on Global Citizenship of this third edition, in partnership with the Council of Loures, with a very satisfactory outcome for the great support of teachers, educators, institutions and other NGDO for the initiative. The objective of the seminar "Educating for Global Citizenship in schools" was the sharing of experiences and exchange of ideas on the integration of global education into school program.

In 2013, the third edition of the "Educate to Cooperate" Loures, the Group of Schools of Catujal - Unhos began, which in two years wants to create a model school with integration of the Education for Global Citizenship into the school curriculum program. Thus, keeping true to its origin, AIDGLOBAL continues to invest in the dissemination of these values within the educational community, helping to make schools into real spaces for the creation of critical and participating citizens that promote social transformation.

In this area AIDGLOBAL has boosted several sessions of Global Citizenship during the year, with children and parents from reading the book "The Ant Juju in the Papaya City", promoting the link between Mozambique and Portugal and the respect for the environment. In 2012 the AIDGLOBAL took it upon itself to boost the Ant Juju Movement in Portugal in partnership with schools, libraries, bookstores and publishers. Indeed supported by the strong message of the books, always with the voluntary gesture and the precious help of a group of storytellers committed to the cause: Sofia Maul, Ana Colaço, André Gago, A few months before continuing the second edition of the Fernanda Freitas, Fernanda Almeida and Ângelo Torres. The Ant Juju Movement in Portugal

The Ant Juju is a civic movement to promote reading and creative expression, established in Mozambique and directed to children in vulnerable situations. To date it has published two children's stories to be distributed free to schools and children's institutions. AIDGLOBAL and the Ant Juju Movement had its first joint action in March 2012, during a visit of the creative team at Primary School of Muxuquete, in the district of Chibuto in Mozambique, which is one of the schools supported by AIDGLOBAL. Here one of the activities from the short "The Ant Juju in the Papaya City" was introduced. The strong message from Education for Environment was why AIDGLOBAL assumed the responsibility of the Ant Juju movement in August 2012, in Portugal. Since then, our organization has sponsored several sessions of Education for Global Citizenship, from the history of Ant Juju, in public local libraries, schools and public spaces in Lisbon, fostering the creation of a network of "friends" of the Ant Juju. After the official launch of the book in August 2012, "The Ant Juju in the Papaya City" came again to the portuguese children, in February 2013, through the dramatized reading of the story by Ana Colaço, announcer of RFM (portuguese radio station) in a library in São Domingos de Rana, Cascais. This activity was followed by a session called Education for Global Citizenship in CED Dona Maria Pia, the Casa Pia in Lisbon, to celebrate Arbor Day with the colors and aromas of Mozambique.

Photo/AIDGLOBAL From May 23 to June 10, Ant Juju streamlined weekends of the Book Fair of Lisbon in a partnership with LeYa publisher, thanks to the solidarity support of the "Ambassadors of Juju": André Gago (actor), Fernanda Almeida (radio announcer), Fernanda Freitas (journalist), Sofia Maul (storyteller), Ana Colaço (radio announcer) and Ângelo Torres (actor). During the activity "I am also Ant" the "The Juju’s Tchova" was also presented. It is a mobile library inspired by the "Bibliotchova" created by AIDGLOBAL to facilitate access to books under a project funded by UNESCO. "The Tchova of Juju" was present at the stand of LeYa during the Book Fair and was part of boosting the Ant Juju activity with the strong interests it awoke among the children. In September after the fair, the tale of "The Ant Juju in the Papaya city" was spurred in the Library Ler Devagar, by the writer and journalist, Cristiana Pereira, part of the creative team of the Movement along with the designer Mia Temporário and the illustrator and artist Walter Zand. On October 26, the story had a meeting with some children coming from supporting institutions under the Open Day organized by the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, where AIDGLOBAL has its facilities.

The communication in 2013 pursued one goal: to make AIDGLOBAL known as an organization linked to education and books. With this target, the mission and vision of the Organization was revised, earlier this year, in order to frame the work that had been done in this area and mark the way in the future. In terms of communication to the general public, the new formulation of these two concepts helped us getting closer to people, facilitating also the foundation of new partnerships. In the design of this strategy, the AIDGLOBAL did not leave behind the colors and smells of the African continent, which have always been present in AIDGLOBAL's fair trade products made in capulana, the images of the campaigns and the readings of the Mozambican tale Ant Juju. In close collaboration with the Delegation in Mozambique, AIDGLOBAL started the year with a fundraising campaign intended to acquire basic necessities for the people affected by floods in southern Mozambique, which were delivered to the Red Cross to be distributed equally to the affected families. Throughout this tragedy, AIDGLOBAL launched a few months later the campaign "Books for Chókwè" in order to rehabilitate a library that had in 2008 been supported with the delivery of more than 2,000 books. The documents and books of the Local Public Library of Chókwè was practically destroyed by the waters. Initially, the campaign focused on raising donations in partnership with the publisher LeYa and the Lisbon City Council, during the Book Fair of Lisbon. Following this agreement, the contribution boxes donated by Acrilevents appeared on the balconies of the three stores LeYa. Subsequently, the Library of Chókwè became part of the cast of

libraries that would receive books under the Solidarity container that had been prepared for months. Nevertheless, the fact that this library alone needed 5,000 books made AIDGLOBAL launch a new appeal to the Portuguese society to collect the 10,000 books that were needed. Thus, in the last part of the year the AIDGLOBAL endeavored bringing together the largest number of publications to its members, volunteers, friends and partners. Correios de Portugal, LeYa, PT Foundation, Volunteers with Wings, Junta de Freguesia dos Olivais and individuals were among the hundreds of donors of this campaign. At the end of the year, the Luso-American Foundation for Development (FLAD) agreed to donate more than 600 volumes and also to be in charge of sending the container to Mozambique. During 2013 we focused on the continuity of other traditional designs of the AIDGLOBAL such as Helping Hands for the production of fair trade by volunteers, in partnership with Magestil, CED D. Maria Pia and Oficina de Costura Criativa and with the support in spreading the website Solidarity Purchase. Another website, Bookandhelp maintained the partnership with the AIDGLOBAL to offer the public a way to help AIDGLOBAL through hotel reservations made online. The IRS (annual income tax return) campaign, which this year had the important support of The Agency 360 in creating publicity materials, was another campaign released in 2013 by AIDGLOBAL in order to inform taxpayers of a simple and cost free way to help the AIDGLOBAL through the annual income tax return. In this context, it is important to highlight the key support of the media to our campaigns and events, such as SAPO, RTP 1, RTP Africa, Antena 1, Radio Comercial, Impulso Positivo, Magazine Sabado and the Sol newspaper.

PLANNED ACTIVITIES NOT CARRIED-OUT

During the year of 2013, there were some constraints in carrying out certain planned activities. In the Cooperation for Development area the creation of another equipped library in the Primary School of Muxuquete has not started. It is due to a lack of funds; AIDGLOBAL could not raise the necessary funds. Regarding the promotion of Motivation for Reading, by agenda issues of the illustrator Margarida Botelho, it was not possible for her visit to Mozambique, as it was planned, and it prevented this activity. However, it is transferred to the 2014 Business Plan. The rehabilitation initiative of the building that houses the Library of Chibuto High School was not performed because the direction of the School transformed the room for the Library to a training room in information and communication technologies, following a donation of 30 computers and frame from a Chinese company. The result of this decision is that the school currently has no room for reading. Further, the e-Inclusion project in the Gaza Province was not realised due to the failure of gathering the support for the transport of 48 monitors and eight computers. Thus, this material will be sent in the container provided for 2014.

MANAGEMENT REPORT 2013

During the year of 2013, AIDGLOBAL started two big projects in Portugal allowing the organization to keep promoting the ideals of education and citizenship, especially in schools and in the civil society in general. In Mozambique, the delegation did not earn any cofinanced projects, so its activity did not have the same strength as before. However they did not give up, but invested strongly in new partnerships and collected books, supplies and school equipment that is to be sent in a container in 2014.

As shown in the accounts, the organization had incomes of 120 875,70€ raised from companies, donations and from particulars that happily, even with this crisis, kept supporting the organization, from the members shares, from the two solidarity events, “The Fado Happens”, that assembled some of the best fado artists in Portugal, and “The Humour Happens”, a stand up comedy show also with several “known faces” in Portugal, and from other initiatives and ways of fundraising. The selling of solidarity postcards also helped to make known the organization and at the same time raise economic resources.

AIDGLOBAL, always believing in a better future, presented projects to its potential donors and submitted several proposals to various lines of financing. The organization will receive answers on the applications in the beginning of the next year.

The Mozambique delegation received 7 301,56€ of the income to assure its operation, allowing it to continue the institutional contacts to raise new partnerships and to conduct surveys among the population in order to meet their needs well in our applications for projects.

2013 was a year that, in Portugal, was once again marked by the consequences of the international crisis and by a strong austerity policy in our country, that led to an increase of economic difficulties for families and companies. It created higher unemployment levels than in the past few years, a high immigration rate among the most well-educated part of the portuguese youth and a general decline of the economic activity and the available income. This austerity situation led to further cuts in the funds from the Portuguese state to the support of cooperation projects developed by the NGO’s that was already last year cut by a devastating 60 %.

The negative result of the delegation of 86 542,30 MZN (2 163,55 €) is the value of the amortization of the vehicle that AIDGLOBAL has in Mozambique, the value of 2 168,43€.

This situation caused a general decrease of available funds that non-profit entities can access, in the public and in the private sector, and AIDGLOBAL was no exception. Facing these difficulties, AIDGLOBAL invested in finding solutions, reinforcing and developing new national and international partnerships and diversifying the credit lines that appeals. That was also the reason why a project financed by the European Commission, where AIDGLOBAL is partner with other organizations from Germany, Romania and Portugal, was approved in April of 2013.

The consolidated amount in the national accounts, of Mozambique Retained Earnings reflected a loss organization’s equity in the amount of 335.88€, already including net income. The Net Positive Result of Portugal of 32 986,43€ must be affected by the Accumulated net profit of delegation in Mozambique of 335,88€, passing the same to 32 650,55€. The total amounts collected was invested to finance the various projects and activities developed by AIDGLOBAL as well as expenses related to the functioning of the organization, always with the objective of guaranteeing the sustainability in times of adversity and of preparing new projects and activities that meets the needs of the beneficiaries with whom we work in Portugal and across it borders.
