STARTING RIGHT HERE AT HOME. Hershey’s® Ice Cream is a firm believer in helping kids make healthy choices. Our complete school program helps them do that. Pennsylvania is where we manufacture our products. The area is known for its rich heritage relating to dairy products. We use the new Federal “Smart Snacks in Schools” standards as a guide to developing school dessert items for all the states we serve. Below are the new “Smart Snacks” standards for competitive foods.

“SMART SNACKS IN SCHOOLS” STANDARDS CALORIES

Snack items and side dishes sold à la carte: < 200 calories per item as served, including any added accompaniments.

TOTAL FATS

Acceptable food items must have < 35% calories from total fat as served.

SATURATED FATS

Acceptable food items must have < 10% calories from saturated fat as served.

TRANS FATS

Zero grams of trans fat as served (≤ 0.5g per portion).

SUGAR

Acceptable food items must have < 35% of weight from total sugar as served.

SODIUM

Snack items and side dishes sold à la carte: < 200mg sodium per item as served.

DAILY VALUE

Contains 10% of a Daily Value of the nutrients Potassium, Calcium, Vitamin D, or Dietary Fiber, or contains dairy or fruit as the first ingredient.

MEETING YOUR GUIDELINES WITH DELICIOUS PRODUCTS.

Every state will now be required to follow the USDA Federal Guidelines when it comes to school nutritional meal products and a la carte items. Our goal is to assist you in finding delicious products to satisfy and delight students and staff, while enabling you to increase your school’s profit potential and meeting your specific needs and guidelines.

NATIONAL GUIDELINES The New USDA Smart Snacks Rule means that all foods and beverages sold outside the school meal program during the school day must meet the nutritional standards. These standards are:

Less than 200 calories per item Less than 35 percent of total calories from fat Less than 10 percent of total calories from saturated fats Zero grams trans fat (less than 0.5 g per portion) Less than 35% of weight from total sugar Less than 200 mg sodium per item Contains 10% or more of a Daily Value of nutrients or contains Dairy or Fruit as the first ingredient
