MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

HELD ON TUESDAY, MAY 27, 2014 at 6:00 PM BOARD OFFICE, NAPANEE, ONTARIO

A.

(i)

Opening Prayer: Trustee Dall led the Board in an Opening Prayer, with special intentions for Mr. Charlie Farrell, for Trustee Dall’s father, and for the Board’s senior students who are graduating this year.

(ii)

Quarter Century Club Induction: Trustee Dall presented the Inductees with gifts of appreciation and concluded the ceremony with the following remarks: “It is remarkable that you have served this Catholic educational system for at least twenty-five years of your adult life. To have been of service directly or indirectly to several generations of young people makes your contribution a blessing - for you and for this system. Your Catholic system is grateful to you not just for how long you have served, but for how you have served. You have all made significant contributions to this school system. I thank you on behalf of the Board of Trustees and our whole school system family - we have been blessed by the gift you are to us.” Mr. DiRocco offered his thanks for the commitment of the Inductees and noted that the system is as good as the people who support it and that is why the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board is such a fine school board.

Reflection on System Mission Statement – Trustee Greg Speagle: We are a Catholic School system, called to work in partnership with home, parish and community, on our journey to understand and live the way of Jesus Christ. We are committed to excellence in Catholic education and to lifelong learning, so that those with whom we journey may become caring and contributing citizens in a world of constant challenge.

ALCDSB Students Participate in Skills Canada Competition Mrs. Shannon provided Trustees with some background on the May 6, 2014 Skills Canada Competition that took place in Waterloo, Ontario, and introduced Mr. Jeff Lacroix, teacher at Nicholson Catholic College and Skills Canada Coordinator for the Board, and Mrs. Charlene Landry-Kyte, Vice-Principal at St. Theresa Catholic Secondary School who attended the competition with students to observe and promote the program. Mr. Lacroix presented Trustees with a short student-made video that summarized the event on May 6th, and noted how much the competition has grown since 2008 as a way for students to engage in this atmosphere of learning.

(ii)

ALCDSB Response to Intervention (RTI) Model: Supporting Oral Language and Literacy Challenges Ms. Kennedy introduced Ms. Kim Carter and Ms. Anthea Murrell, Speech and Language Pathologists for the Board, who presented the Board’s Reponses to Intervention (RTI) Model, which is the Board’s tiered support model for speech and language services for students. The model focuses on early intervention and helping the student to improve as soon as possible with continued monitoring and in-classroom support, reducing wait times for students as a result.

New Business: (a)

Educational Programs/Services: (i)

Faith and Leadership Forum 2014 Mrs. Shannon provided Trustees with an update on the Faith and Leadership Forum which took place on Friday, May 9, 2014. Mrs. Shannon noted that 48 students leaders from across the Board came to the Board Office to share inspiring ideas and help build their capacity as student council executives for their home schools.

(ii)

Belong Classroom – Section 23 Program Update Ms. Kennedy introduced Ms. Deni Melim, the Belong classroom teacher at Archbishop O’Sullivan Catholic School. Ms. Melim presented Trustees with an overview of the elements, successes and challenges of the program, which focuses on students with attachment disorders and early relational trauma. Trustees learned about the PACE approach (playfulness, acceptance, curiosity and empathy) which has resulted in documented progress for each student.

Special Education Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes – May 2014 This item was presented for information.

(ii)

New Kingston Centre Catholic Elementary School – Communication to School Communities Mr. Campbell presented Trustees with the letter that will be sent home with students in the three schools communities.

(iii)

CCSTA 2014 AGM and Conference Update – Verbal Report Trustee Dall provided Trustees with an update on the upcoming CCSTA 2014 AGM and Conference.

(d)

Chair’s Report: Trustee Dall noted that May has been a busy month with Board activities, and thanked everyone who helped to coordinate the events.

12.

Director’s Report: Mr. DiRocco also noted the many activities across the Board in May, which is an example of who we are as a Catholic School System. Mr. DiRocco thanked the Principals and Vice-Principals who demonstrate a strong faithbased leadership in our system, and who serve our students well.

13.

Trustee Community Linkages/Comments: Student Trustee Sudds announced that Nicholson Catholic College raised more than $35,000 for Relay for Life. Trustee Summers noted that she attended the St. Marguerite Bourgeoys production of the Jungle Book, and commented that the events of Catholic Education Week had a strong emphasis on community and belonging, which is what Catholic Education is all about. Trustee Turkington updated that she attended St. John XXIII to assist students with helping the mother duck and her ducklings make their way safely back to nature. Trustee Shea commented that he had a recent phone call from a concerned parent regarding OECTA’s announcement around the Gay Pride Parade. It was noted that OECTA has posted a statement on their website, and parents can be referred to it. Trustee Kennelly thanked those who participated in or attended the Food for Learning Silent Auction, which raised $14,000. Trustee Brisbois noted that the Quinte Children’s Water Festival had 950 students participating over 2 days.
