RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Florida State University • Current research projects listed under “Projects in Progress”. • Collaboratively wrote three evaluation project proposals involving AHCA data on Medicaid managed care as a payment system for long-term care in Florida. Worked with project PI Les Beitsch, MD, JD and multiple FSU faculty members. All three projects were funded for a total award of $2 million. 2013-2014. • Helped to develop collaborative study on the role and impact of social support resources as aids in smoking cessation. Worked with faculty from the Florida Center for Prevention Research (FCPR), the Center for Economic Forecasting and Analysis (CEFA), and FSU College of Medicine. 2012. • Helped to develop collaborative intervention project to promote optimal nutritional health and weight management for Floridians. Worked with faculty from the Florida Center for Prevention Research (FCPR) and FSU College of Medicine. 2012. • Conducted community needs assessment research on adult populations in Havana, FL. Working with interdisciplinary group of FSU and FAMU faculty. Project funded by Health Center Planning Grant ($80,000) from Health Resources & Services Administration. 2011-2012.

Worked with UMDNJ colleagues to develop a collaborative study of fall hazards encountered by “snowbirds” migrating seasonally between New Jersey and Florida. This study will inform future development of interventions to mitigate these hazards for the affected populations. 2010-2011. Performed mixed methods community needs assessments and secured HRSA Health Center Planning Grants ($80,000 each) for two community health centers: Havana Health and Wellness Center (Havana, FL) and Neighborhood Health Services (Tallahassee, FL). Also secured capital improvements grant ($500,000) from HRSA in support of three school-based health centers in Gadsden County, FL. 2011. Conducted community focus groups for a new health clinic serving low-income and underserved populations in Havana, FL. Supervised graduate students assisting with data collection, and prepared final report for FL Department of Health, Office of Minority Health. Project funded by grant from DOH-OMH. 2011. Worked with FL CURED, FL DOH, and FL Agency for Health Care Administration on collaborative project to identify diseases and conditions with high likelihood of near-term improvement through targeted biomedical research and research-based interventions. 2011 – 2012. Worked with FL CURED, John Taylor, PhD, John Ryan, DrPH, and Ed Shahady, MD on collaborative practice-based research project to identify factors that promote success for primary care clinics in improving self-management skills of patients with diabetes. This project was part of a larger effort to expand practice-based research networks and resources in FL. 2010 – 2012. Worked with FL CURED, FL DOH, FL Biomedical Research Program, and researchers from FL universities and institutes to collect data on active health disparities research projects in FL. First phase of project involved development of the Health Disparities Research Agenda for Florida, completed in June 2011. 2010 – 2012.

Rutgers University / University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey • Conducted qualitative study of pain management practices in New Jersey acute care hospitals, focusing on barriers to implementing alternatives to opioid therapy. Presented results to the New Jersey Hospital Association along with a white paper, and published findings in Hospitals and Health Networks Weekly. Project advised by Bernadette West, PhD and Lois Grau, PhD. 2009. • Assisted Bernadette West, PhD and UMDNJ Office of Public Health Practice with qualitative assessment of local health departments’ training needs, and wrote most of final report for project. 2008. • Served as Research Assistant for NJ Safe Schools Program under direction of Derek Shendell, DEnv, MPH. Analyzed data from incident report forms submitted by NJ secondary schools and facilitated focus groups at annual Task Force meetings. Prepared publications, posters, and presentations based on incident data. 2008 – 2010. • Worked with Derek Shendell, DEnv, MPH to analyze data from research on safe walkability for senior citizens in urban built environments, and developed several publications based on this research. 2008 – 2011.

Developing (as PI) a qualitative study of FSU Student Health providers’ experiences in providing pain management services to students. Grant application in development during Summer 2014. If funded, research will commence in Spring 2015. Adapting dissertation manuscript (as sole author) into two additional articles for publication in sociomedical journals. Analyses use data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) to illuminate how different social factors drive and shape relationships between chronic inflammation and quality of life.
