Supervision of and thesis advisement to graduate students. Coordination of an intensive public health study trip to Havana, Cuba for Master’s level students 2002-2005. Faculty advisor for Human Rights Action (HuRA) at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University; Conference Planning Chair for the international conference “Lessons Learned from Rights Based Approaches to Health” held 14-16 April 2005 Director 2013 – Present Center for Humanitarian Emergencies, Emory University Principal and co-investigator on two five year cooperative agreement between the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Emergency Response and Recovery Branch (ERRB) and the Rollins School of Public Health. One cooperative agreement (2013-2018) establishes a Center for Humanitarian Emergencies (CHE) at Emory. Programs include: a competency-based graduate certificate program in humanitarian emergencies; a fellowship program for mid-career professionals; and funded field practicum opportunities. Additional activities include administration of the executive and curricula committees of the CHE, original research, and course development. Research and programmatic activities included a ‘How To Guide’ for UNICEF’s Risk Informed Programming. The second cooperative agreement (2015-2020) supports the development of five Coursera courses related to health in humanitarian emergencies; the development and implementation of a Nutrition in Emergencies curriculum in cooperation with International Medical Corps; and training in spatial analysis for Zika virus surveillance in Latin America. Executive Director April 2002 – Present Institute of Human Rights, Emory University Founding member and Executive Director of the Emory University Institute of Human Rights; Founder and administrator of an interdisciplinary graduate certificate program in human rights and training program in human rights for faculty and professionals; Developed and administered an Atlanta based Asylum Network for asylum seekers in the Southeastern United States through partnership with Physicians for Human Rights; Provided program planning and logistics management for an ongoing speaker series, and Human Rights Week at Emory University; Coordinated partnerships with community agencies in the Atlanta area and human rights arena including the Carter Presidential Center, Amnesty International, the United Nations Association, CARE USA, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Human Rights Atlanta. Deepam Educational Society for Health Chennai, India July-August 2001 The Deepam Education Society for Health (DESH) is a non-governmental organization based in Chennai (Madras), India that provides health education services in the area of HIV to women and children in India. Performed consulting duties including program methodology design, development and performance of data analysis, preparation of a presentation to the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation by the Executive Director of DESH in 1999. Additionally in 2001 traveled to Chennai, India to conduct a threeweek public health training for employees of the organization on various public health topics

COURSES/CURRICULA Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University Global Health 500: Critical Issues in Global Health Introduces MPH students to global public health issues of two kinds: (1) fundamental crosscutting issues such as the relationship between global health and economic development, and (2) selected thematic areas such as child survival, HIV/AIDS, and global tobacco control. Global Health 508: Health and Human Rights Engages students in critical thinking around issues at the intersection of health and human rights in order to inform effective public health/human rights programming. Global Health 526: Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Human Rights Analyzes how human rights are designed to provide the conditions for the exercise of human agency as the means to enabling people the opportunity to live their versions of the good life. Cross-listed in the graduate schools of Law, Theology, and Political Science. Global Health 591Q: Epi Info Provides an overview of the main Epi Info programs including the creation of data entry screens, the construction of databases, data storage and analysis. Emory College Global Health Culture and Society 300R-002: Health in Humanitarian Emergencies This course introduces students to health and social perspectives in humanitarian response and explores a range of topics including: gender and vulnerable populations, war and health, refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), food and nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), mental health, and risk communications. Online Courses Ebola: An Evolving Epidemic (Coursera, Spring 2015) Discusses the evolving Ebola epidemic and its various aspects including disease prevention, management and treatment, response to the epidemic, ethical considerations and the post-Ebola global health landscape. This was the first English language massive open online course about Ebola and the first MOC about an ongoing complex humanitarian emergency. Over 7,000 learners from 171 countries participated in the course. PRS535D: Questionnaire Design and Analysis Taught annually, spring term. Presents the basics of questionnaire development and data analysis, as well as the interpretation and reporting of findings. The course introduces students to both quantitative and qualitative data methods. Curriculum Development Sergio: A curriculum for college and graduate level students Sergio is the Emmy nominated HBO documentary film based on the book by Pulitzer Prizewinning author Samantha Power, which documents the life and tragic death of Brazilian born diplomat and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Sergio Vieira de Mello. A curriculum for teaching college and graduate level students in public health has been developed to accompany the film. The curriculum is especially relevant for those interested in humanitarian aid work and first responders. Teaching themes of the curriculum include identity, ethics and professional development. The curriculum is available in English, French and Portuguese.

Public Health Ethics A four-hour course which focuses on ethics and their role in the practice of public health. This course offers an introduction to ethical theories, case studies, and the ethical codes of various health professions. Communication Strategies in Public Health This four-hour course focuses on the process of health education. Major principles discussed include: health communication planning strategies, media literacy, social marketing, and media advocacy. Creating Public Health Promotion Web Pages An eight-hour course that focuses on the creation of web pages for publication on the World Wide Web. Hands-on instruction in Hyper Text Mark-up Language (HTML) and instruction for creating hypertext and graphics are included in the course. A Prostate Cancer Curriculum for Public Health Professionals A two-day course in prostate cancer education for public health and nursing professionals in the state of Georgia. This course provides instruction in the anatomy of the prostate, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment options, health education strategies and policy issues in the field of prostate cancer.
