Spring 2015!

Our Story! The idea for Purnell started when our co-founder Brent Dehlsen, leading a successful wind energy company, was unsatisfied with the everyday gear available to outfit the techs who spent their days hundreds of feet off the ground in crazy weather conditions. He visualized something they could wear both on and off the job but also wanted some specific design tweaks – like rearranged pockets and seams that would fit better under their safety harnesses. ! ! Years later that vision became real when he joined forces with sister-in-law and retail veteran Brita Womack, and built Purnell’s first designs from scratch. Together they searched for new ideas, rethought common clothing assumptions, and were rewarded with an incredible response to their first designs. Even though those first styles were officially workwear, they were clearly just as appealing for people heading out on the trail or in to town. They knew they’d hit a nerve, so they applied their design approach to creating a fresh collection of revisited classics for men and women. ! ! ! !

We Design With a Purpose! Before we ever take a step toward a new design, we pour a couple cups of strong coffee and hone in on the goal we’re trying to achieve. We look at it from different angles, we try to define it in different ways, and we don’t put the pen to paper until we really understand where we’re trying to go. At Purnell, we call this “purposeful design.” Our clothes are clean and simple, subtle and iconic. Maker Story! Municipal Winemakers, one of the locations for our catalog shoot, is a frequented stop along the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, and the brainchild of this “Maker Story” craftsman, Dave Potter. When he’s not pouring his rustic varietals in the Muni tasting room or signing members up for his wine club, “Club Awesome”, Dave’s other day job is Director of Winemaking Operations for the region’s famous Fess Parker Wines. ! ! Dave is passionate about winemaking and aspires to craft wines of the highest quality, that are widely appreciated, and commercially successful. Purnell co-founder Brent Dehlsen's grandmother, Francis Purnell, studied art at prestigious University of California Berkeley in the 1920s. Born and raised in Guadalajara Mexico, she went on to marry a Danish engineer, who among other things, was instrumental in expanding the Southern Pacific Railroad through Central Mexico.! ! We celebrate her sense of adventure and artistic exploration in our "Francis Art Tees” showcasing a few of her original art school illustration studies she crafted nearly 100 years ago.! Huatta, Peru! EWB-USA University of California Berkeley Chapter! ! In Huatta, Peru, the community's sole access to water is contaminated groundwater from a shallow well. EWB-USA is partnering with the community to build alternative, clean water sources. To-date, four new water supply systems have been built at the local primary school and health clinic. Moving forward, EWB-USA will continue to work with the community so that each household is empowered to build, use and maintain their own small-scale water filtration system. !

Mattru Jong, Sierra Leone! EWB-USA Lehigh Valley Professional Chapter! ! At a secondary school in Mattru Jong, Sierra Leone, the impact of electricity on the community is literally night and day. Ten years ago, a civil war destroyed the energy infrastructure at the school. EWB-USA partnered with the community to install locally sourced solar panels. These efforts brought light to dark classrooms, which allowed the school to reopen its doors to 1,500 students.!

STRUCTURES!

La Conquista, Nicaragua! EWB-USA Colorado School of Mines Chapter!  ! In La Conquista, Nicaragua, Engineers Without Borders USA is building a suspended footbridge that will connect eight communities to the nearby city of Jenotepe. During the rainy season the river that divides the community and the nearby city becomes flooded and impassable. When the bridge is complete, it will provide the communities with year-round access to businesses, markets, clinics and schools.!
