Welcome to the Shawsheen Technical Institute! Shawsheen Valley Technical High School’s technical and vocational programs offer state-ofthe-art career training to students from our five towns. The Shawsheen Technical Institute seeks to open our facility and capabilities to all citizens of the region, and beyond. Our adult education and workforce development programs are designed to help develop job skills and enhance the quality of life in our communities. Our five district communities—Bedford, Billerica, Burlington, Tewksbury and Wilmington—provide tremendous support to keep our facility and equipment up-to-date. Enrolling in our evening or weekend programs gives you a chance to benefit from this investment, and allows us to help fulfill our broad district mission. Whether you take one class to satisfy a personal interest or pursue a course of study to attain an industry certification and enhance your employability, we welcome you and thank you for your support. STI offers our customers many ways to connect and register for our evening courses. The fastest and easiest way to register is online at shawsheeninstitute. org. Our web site is organized using the same course categories as the Table of Contents provided on this page. You can also download a copy of this catalog from the web site at shawsheeninstitute.org. Our website also provides an easy and convenient way to contact the adult education staff via our email inquiry system. You may also register in person during walk-in registration on January 18th, 23rd, 24th, & 30th from 5:00-8:00pm in the school store. If you miss our walk-in registration period, you may still register on-line at any time or call the adult education line to make an evening appointment. Please enter the school grounds via the Cook Street entrance across from Farm Street. The school store is easily accessed by entering the building through the wide double doors marked door No. 20. The main parking lot provides easy access to this main student entrance. If you miss the walk-in registration period and still would prefer to register in person you may do so at any time prior to the start of a course by contacting the STI staff at [email protected]. The course schedule includes 80 Hours of hands-on instruction PLUS 12 Hours of additional Test Preparation. Start here and increase your knowledge and develop skills in PC repair and service. You will learn how to build, configure, and maintain a PC as well as learn the basics of networking and security. This course offers the best of current instructional methods including instructor led learning labs, online tutorials, and peer learning and support. Introduction to Programming using Java

Wednesday 6:30-9pm Course begins: April 5th The Advanced JavaScript course covers popular JavaScript libraries and technologies for both front-end and back-end web applications. You will be learning how to enable AJAX techniques in JavaScript as well as fundamentals of three popular JavaScript frameworks: jQuery, Node.js, and AngularJS. Prerequisite: Introduction to JavaScript, or similar academic/ professional JavaScript experience.

STI IS OFFERING YOU A LIFELINE FOR LEARNING The Institute for EMS and Allied Health Professions @ Lifeline is now at Shawsheen! This collaboration offers the opportunity to learn at an accredited training institution in a state-of-the art health education facility.

EMT: Offered by Lifeline Institute Instructor: Andre Kayzakian Tuition: $1295 includes textbook. Does NOT include testing fee. 16 Weeks – 168 Hours. Mon & Wed: 5:30-9:30pm plus 8 Saturdays from 8:30am – 3pm Course begins: Saturday February 4th from 9am until 3pm (orientation and other important activities including CPR training) Session 1 begins Monday February 6th at 5:30pm This course provides the student with the information and training needed to qualify for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians EMT examination and then state certification. Course content includes but not limited to the following topics: anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, management of medical and trauma related emergencies, patient assessment, resuscitation, hazardous materials, and outdoor auto extrication.

Certified Nursing Assistant Instructor: Mary-Ann O’Brien Nichols with LPN staff Tuition: $895. Tuition includes the cost of the textbook 13 weeks - 75 hours of classroom plus clinical training*: Mon & Wed 6:00pm – 9:00pm Course begins: February 27th *PLEASE NOTE: In addition to the 75 hours of classroom training you will perform 25 hours of supervised clinical training over two weekends at a highly regarded longterm care facility in the area. Typically, these are backto-back weekends at the end of the course and are a requirement for taking the certification exam. This course will prepare you for the nursing assistant certification exam and a career in the health care industry. This course covers a wide range of topics including: client safety, nutrition, preventing infection, client mobility, hygiene and grooming and many others that will serve you well on the job. The American Red Cross certification test is offered at Shawsheen in the clinical setting where students train. You may register for this test upon the successful completion of the course. Testing fees are paid directly to the American Red Cross.

Welding 1: The Fundamentals

Tues & Thurs 6:00-8:30pm Course begins: March 7th AutoCAD is one of the premier design tools used in architectural, construction and manufacturing applications. This is an introductory course taught in a dedicated drafting and CAD training facility.

Instructor: Pat Ryan Tuition: $425 (tuition includes cost of materials) 5 Weeks – 30 Hours. Mon & Wed 5:30-8:30pm Course begins: February 27th This course focuses on the basics of Oxy Acetylene welding. We start first with the most important aspect of welding—safety. From here students will begin to learn basic welding techniques using oxy acetylene gases, including: adjusting the flame to maintain a sharp welding cone, creating and sustaining a welding “puddle,” and proper gas flow. And again, the emphasis is always on safety and proper welding techniques. STI provides all our students with the necessary safety equipment plus all welding materials.

SolidWorks 3-D Modeling The Fundamentals and More Instructor: Joseph Parrett Tuition: $295 6 Weeks - 30 Hours. Mon & Wed 6:00-8:30pm Course begins: March 6th SolidWorks is the premier 3-D modeling software and is used worldwide in nearly every industry including: industrial, medical, scientific, high tech and transportation. If it’s being designed, simulated, or modeled chances are it’s on SolidWorks 3-D software.

Mon & Wed 5:30-8:30pm Course begins: April 3rd This is a welding skills enhancement course suitable for those with some welding experience looking to deepen their knowledge of multiple welding techniques such as MIG, TIG, or TTK. Monday and Wednesday 6:309:00pm Course begins: February 27th Please NOTE: This course is limited to 10 students Learn the basics of cabinetry from a professional cabinet maker. This course is designed for the experienced woodworker looking to improve his/her skill either as a hobbyist or tradesperson. This course teaches the fundamental techniques needed to build cabinetry by todays industry standards. During these eight weeks, you will learn and hone skills in machining, joinery, layout, and assembly. The purpose of the course is to teach the most effective, efficient, safe and practical way to make beautiful, and useful cabinetry for any application. By the end of the course, students will be able to take home their own sample cabinet but more importantly the basic ability to visualize and execute the steps needed to build cabinetry for any application.

Thursday 6:30-8:30pm Course begins: March 2nd Designed for the do-it-yourself homeowner, those considering a landscape project, or individuals in the green industry, this course will provide step by step procedures in the creation and implementation of a landscape design. This course walks students through the analysis and layout of a property, making decisions on the proper selection of plants and hardscape, and culminating with a functional master plan. Beginner Fly Tying Class Instructor: Rob Galante Tuition: $139 (tuition includes cost of materials) 4 Weeks – 12 Hours. Saturday 9am ‘til 12pm Course begins Saturday March 4th Please NOTE: Class is limited to 10 students. This course is designed to introduce the fundamentals of fly tying to anyone who has always wanted to learn how to tie their own fly’s. We will focus on the basics and cover the major parts of the fly which include hooks, threads, synthetic materials, natural materials, and tools. We will tie multiple fly’s during each meeting and learn basic thread handling and construction techniques. You will need a basic set of tools. The minimum is a vise, bobbin, scissors, and a whip finishing tool. Rob Galante has over 45 years’ experience tying fly’s and teaching fly tying. Rob has demonstrated at many of the local shows including The Fly Fishing show, at the Trout Unlimited (TU) and the Federation of Fly Tyers (FFF) booths. This is a hands-on class and the maximum number of students is 10. This is for anyone who wants to learn how to tie fly’s. All materials and hooks are supplied!

Intermediate Fly Tying Instructor: Rob Galante. Tuition: $170 (includes cost of some materials, students should bring your own tools as mentioned below) 10 Weeks – 25 Hours. Wednesday 6:30-9:00pm. Course begins March 1st Please NOTE: Class is limited to 10 students. This is an instructor led class for those with prior experience tying fly’s. We tie 10 fly’s over the 10 week period. We always try to tie multiple flies of the same pattern each night to hone the skills we are learning. The flies we tie will be chosen for their effectiveness in catching fish as well as the variety of techniques required to construct them. Some of the flies we will tie are Bob Popovics Hollow Fleye, Blane Choclklett’s Game Changer, the T-Bone and an Intruder. There will be a mix of salt and freshwater fly’s. During the course students will have the opportunity to share personal techniques. Each student will need a vise, bobbin and scissors. Maximum number of students is 10. If you are a novice please register for the Beginner Course as this is a class for people with experience and knowledge of tying techniques.

Instructor: Sarah Middleton Tuition: $129 7 Weeks – 14 Hours. Wednesday 7:00-9:00pm Course begins: March 15th Grow or enhance your artistic abilities with Adobe. This beginner course will allow you to learn and use your own creativity while familiarizing yourself with one of the most popular programs used for design, Adobe. The course will mainly focus on the features within Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. This includes but is not limited to working with vector art, typographic manipulation, logo build & branding, basic layout knowledge, and more.

The Art of Drawing with Charcoal Instructor: Shelby Montecalvo Tuition: $99 5 Weeks – 10 Hours. Wednesday 7:00-9:00pm Course begins: March 15th In this course you will have the opportunity to explore drawing still lives, figures, and more. Whether you’re a beginner, or you have some experience, all skill sets are welcome! This course will teach you search, form, and values. Primarily, we will be using charcoal as a medium, but feel free to bring anything else that you feel comfortable with. Get ready to have some fun, be creative, and get hands-on. Please be prepared to buy a sketchbook for this course - all other materials will be provided by the instructor, or optional.

Paint Night Out – Creative Fun for Everyone Instructor: Alison Ouellette Tuition: $45 per session inclusive of materials. Take the Paint Night Series for $135 and earn one free Paint Night class! These Paint Nights will meet on Thursday evenings from 6:30-9:00pm. Dates are: March 2nd, 16th, 30th, & April 6th You’re invited to de-stress while you recharge your creative side with Paint Night Out at STI! Bring a friend or two, and catch up while you paint a scene on canvas taught by an experienced instructor. We’ll go step by step while having fun, making sure even the first-time painter goes home with a work of art! These are all BEGINNER LEVEL classes, no experience necessary. GlamEd: Basic Beauty

Instructor: Jenna Volpe, RD, LDN Tuition: $79 4 Weeks – 8 Hours. Tuesdays 7:00-9:00pm Course begins: April 3rd We’ve all heard the adage “you are what you eat”. But making healthy food choices can be a challenge starting with the simple fact that “healthy” is an abused term these days. Add in the diversity of food preferences around our dinner tables, and well, it can feel a bit overwhelming. This course is offered by a registered dietitian whose goal is to help you create your healthy kitchen on a family budget. You will learn how to separate nutritional facts from fallacy. In addition, you’ll review grocery shopping strategies that support healthy and affordable family menus. You’ll have fun learning more about kitchen organization and food preparation allowing you to prepare simple and delicious meals and tasty treats.

Instructor: Samantha Tucci Tuition: $139 7 Weeks – 14 Hours. Wednesday 6:30-8:30pm Course begins March 1st Do you have a drawer full of makeup but you have no idea where to start? If you said yes, this is the course for you! Glam Education’s Basic Beauty course is designed for those wanting to begin their journey into the world of makeup. Focusing on the fundamental practices of makeup application, this class will navigate beginners through the process in its entirety: beginning with skin prep, foundation/concealer application, to brows, lashes, liner and an everyday eye, to blush and bronzer and finishing off with lipstick. This program will deliver tips & tricks, application techniques, product knowledge, and much more for students to walk away looking and feeling their best! Grab a friend and join us for a fun class! This course is conveniently taught in our Cosmetology Shop. A set of makeup brushes and Glam Guide are provided for students to keep. Students must bring their own makeup. Additional products will be provided for use during the course.

Healthy Kitchens

Introduction to Oriental Medicine Instructor: Hugh M. Turcotte, Licensed Acupuncturist, M.A.O.M. Tuition: $69 3 Weeks – 6 Hours. Tuesdays 7:00-9:00pm Course begins: March 21st The goal of this course is to provide the general public with an overview of Chinese Medicine – its history, modalities, major theories, and scope of applications. While each of the major branches of Chinese Medicine [Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Tui Na (Oriental Bodywork), Qi Gong (Exercise & Meditation), and Chinese Nutrition] will be put into a general context, this course will focus on Chinese Medicine’s practical value – individualized, customized health care through the “Differential Diagnosis.” During this 3-evening, 6-hour class, Hugh will cover a number of simple, practical, and cost-effective methods of maintaining or improving health and vitality, no matter what your age or health.

Smart Money Moves for Families: A Two-Night Workshop Instructor: Catherine Kennedy A 2 night workshop series, Thursday March 23rd & 30th from 7:00-9:00pm. Tuition: $50 Young families and couples often take a piecemeal approach to their financial world...a retirement account here, an insurance policy there, different types of loans, maybe some legal documents. Financial strategist, Catherine Kennedy of the Bulfinch Group will provide attendees a holistic, integrated framework for thinking about their finances, along with strategies and approaches that result in successful financial outcomes. Case studies will be used to show what works, as well as mistakes to avoid. We will also address legal documents that should be in place. While the material presented is applicable to all ages, emphasis will be on early to mid-career families seeking to be wise and mature about money matters.

Maximize Your Social Security Benefits Instructor: Catherine Kennedy This is a one evening mini-course, Thursday April 6th from 7:00-9:00pm. Tuition: $20 Social Security is a significant part of the retirement puzzle. Very recent changes to social security may impact your planning. Learn how to get the most from your benefits and coordinate this income with your overall retirement strategy. We will talk about the current state of Social Security, what to consider when planning your benefit start date, spousal benefits, options for divorcees, buy-back strategies, tax reduction strategies and coordination with state and federal retirement plans (Windfall Elimination Provisions and Government Pension Offsets). We will also review special planning considerations for self-employed individuals.

Building Wealth: An Introduction to Personal Investing Instructor: Glenn McIntyre A two-part series, March 22nd and 29th from 7:00 to 9pm. Tuition: $50 This is an introductory course in financial literacy for those interested in building wealth through a personal investment plan. The focus is on the various investment instruments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETF’s, annuities, etc. This course does not describe one specific” investment system” or investment opportunity. This is a course for those who want to understand the basics for building a personal investment portfolio.

Long Term Care Planning – Another Piece of the Puzzle Instructor: Catherine Kennedy This is a one evening mini-course, April 13th from 7:00-9:00pm. Tuition: $20 Long Term Care planning is about more than finances. Have you considered the impact on your spouse and family? Have you heard there are ways to protect your savings and home? We will empower you to make better decisions and discuss the solutions available. We will review the types of care, cost and who pays for it. The role of Medicare and Medicaid, what forms of insurance are available to help pay for care and what to look for when evaluating policies. We will compare and contrast traditional long term care polices with newer hybrids that can guarantee a payment for care and/or provide a life insurance benefit. This course would be beneficial for those approaching, or in retirement, as well as for family members concerned about aging parent.

Financial Strategies for a Secure Retirement: Putting Together the Puzzle Instructor: Catherine Kennedy This is a two-evening mini-course, Thurs April 27th & May 4th from 7:00-9:00pm. Tuition: $35 This workshop will look at the big picture: developing a hierarchy for spending and investing your money; strategies that provide a better outcome, regardless of investment performance; special rules to manage your 401(k), 403(b) and pension as you approach retirement; what you need to know about target funds; why investment strategies must be different in retirement; when a Roth makes sense; exploring the hype around annuities: forgotten financial pitfalls and alternative ways to preserve your nest egg against long-term care costs. Catherine Kennedy has more than 25 years of experience working in financial services. She has been a capital markets expert on Wall Street, a tech and telecom analyst and a chairman of the board of trustees for a pension fund for a non-profit. She has an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Catherine has a passion for empowering individuals to take control of their financial futures. She is an advisor with The Bulfinch Group, LLC.

You may also register in person during walk-in registration on January 18th, 23rd, 24th, & 30th from 5:00-8:00pm in the school store. The school store is easily accessed by entering the building through the wide double doors marked door No. 20. The main parking lot provides easy access to this main student entrance.

When does, registration begin? Registration opens as soon as the catalog of classes is posted online at www.shasheeninstitute.org and continues until three days prior to the first meeting of any class, as space permits. Under-enrolled classes are cancelled, so register early.

Registration Confirmation You are officially enrolled as soon as we receive your payment. An email address is required for a confirmation email to be sent to you from STI.

Course Withdrawal and Refunds Refunds are handled as follows: 1. Full refunds are given when a class is cancelled due to low enrollment. 2. Withdrawal from any course up to 8 days prior to the start date will receive a full refund. 3. Withdrawal from a course 7 days or less prior to the published start date of the course we provide a 50% refund. 4. No refund will be issued AFTER the first class of any course. 5. You must submit a refund request using the Refund Request Form provided on the STI website. 6. Refund payments require a 30-day processing period.

My First Night of Class, Room Assignments, Course Materials On the first night of class, enter the building through the main student entrance. STI staff will be available to bring students to their classrooms. For most courses instructors will provide hand-outs and other course materials, very few courses require a text book. We do recommend that you bring a notebook and pen for your own benefit.

School Closings Occasionally due to unforeseen circumstances (snow, power outages, instructor illness, etc.) STI must cancel a class. In the case of a snow emergency, when the day school is cancelled due to snow conditions, evening classes are also cancelled. Check your local news channel for school snow cancellations. In the event day classes are not cancelled and the weather worsens, a decision will be made by 4 p.m. and relayed to the television stations: WBZ TV 4, WCVB TV 5, WHDH TV 7 and FOX 25. If a class is canceled for reasons other than weather students will receive a phone call and/or e-mail from the course instructor and/or STI faculty letting them know class has been cancelled.

Class Make-Up In the event a class is cancelled classes are made up (same day of the week and time) by extending the finishing date of the course, unless other arrangements are made between the instructor and the class and approved by the director.
