A Message from the Superintendent I know that you have had a wonderful summer with the many fun and enriching opportunities and that you are ready for students to return to school on August 6. We have collected information that will be helpful to you and your child as you prepare for the new school year. It’s an exciting time in Hattiesburg Public Schools. We have many new programs in place, especially in our secondary schools. The Lillie Burney STEAM Academy is here, and we have expanded our Career Academies at HHS. Our students are now being offered more opportunities for digital learning than ever before! And over the summer Jarius Adams, one of our students, was selected as the National Forensics Student of the Year! We are excited to have our students back and begin one of our best years ever! As you prepare for the new year, please be sure to have your child back on a regular bedtime routine two weeks prior to school starting. This can be one of the most difficult adjustments for students to make after a long break. Also, continue to encourage your child to read on their own and with you, whenever possible. Finally, registration is July 30 & 31, and it is very important that we have all the children in school on the “first day.” If you need assistance with uniforms or other school materials, please contact our Family Education Center at (601) 582-6672 to see what assistance we have available for you. We look forward to seeing all of our students in school on August 6!  m James Q. Bacchus, Superintendent, Hattiesburg Public Schools

From the Curriculum and Instruction Department It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the 2015-2016 school year. As the newly appointed Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. I have been an educator for over 22 years and have been a teacher, a principal and, most recently, Director of Schools for HPSD. Our mission in HPSD is to prepare ALL students to graduate and become productive citizens. The active participation and collaboration of families, school staff and community organizations are essential for your child’s success. In order to help your child succeed, we encourage the following: m Open communication with your child’s teacher is vital throughout the year. m Ask your child questions about their day and school assignments. Be specific. m  Reading & writing are essential and must become a part of our students’ daily lives. m Reinforcing the importance of on-time school attendance and finishing assignments. We are looking forward to a successful and exciting school year. Thank you for your continued support of our students and district.  m Teresa Poole, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction

VACCINATION REQUIRED FOR ALL 7th GRADERS ATTENTION PARENTS:  In order to enter school, all 7th graders must have documentation from a physician verifying that they have received a recent Tdap vaccination (at age seven or later). This includes new students, current students and transfer students in both public and private schools. This is a new requirement by the state starting with the 2012-13 school year. Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) vaccination provides protection against whooping cough (pertussis), a highly contagious disease that can be severe or fatal, especially in very young children. Infants who are too young to be vaccinated against pertussis must be protected by ensuring that adolescents and adults around them cannot carry the disease.  m

WELCOME BACK PARENTS & STUDENTS!

Hattiesburg Public School District Harper-Wallin Family Education Center for Families and Children

The Hattiesburg Public School District has made a commitment to ensure that hungry students are getting enough nutritious food each day. We are entering our second year of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) created under the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010. This option allows school districts to forgo collecting applications for free and reduced price school meals and provide a nutritious breakfast and lunch at no charge to all students, regardless of income. Research shows that increasing school meal participation, particularly breakfast, improves student achievement, diet, attendance and behavior. We are excited about feeding our children! What an amazing opportunity to ensure that students have all of the building blocks necessary for success in the classroom. Reducing hunger and assisting our learners today will prepare them for a brighter future tomorrow. Alexsis Caston is the Director of Child Nutrition and may be contacted at (601) 582-5078.  m

Cradle-3 and Reading Department Welcome back from an awesome summer break. We are excited about the 2015-2016 school term and the responsibility to advance our students to the next literacy proficiency level. We know from research that a reading program is not the cornerstone that “builds” successful readers. A successful teacher of beginning reading generates enthusiasm and appreciation for reading. This teacher practices quality, effective instruction daily by implementing and executing the 5 + 1 reading components that empower students to become proficient, life-long readers. The ultimate goal of Cradle to Third/Reading Department is to provide support and assistance to ensure that Mississippi College and Career Standards are introduced and

HATTIESBURG PUBLIC SCHOOL’S DISTRICT PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT POLICY In support of strengthening student academic achievement, each local educational agency (LEA or school district) that receives Title I, Part A funds must develop jointly with, agree on with, and distribute to, parents of participating children a written parental involvement policy that contains information required by Section 1118(a)(2) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) (district wide parental involvement policy). The policy establishes the LEA’s expectations for parental involvement and describes how the LEA will implement a number of specific parental involvement activities, and is incorporated into the LEA’s plan submitted to the Mississippi Department of Education. The Hattiesburg Public School District agrees to implement the following statutory requirements: m The school district will put into operation programs, activities and procedures for the involvement of parents in all of its schools with Title I, Part A programs, consistent with Section 1118 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Those programs, activities and procedures will be planned and operated with meaningful consultation with parents of participating children. m Consistent with section 1118, the school district will work with its schools to ensure that the required school-level parental involvement policies meet the requirements of Section 1118(b) of the ESEA, and each include, as a component, a school-parent compact consistent with Section 1118(d) of the ESEA. m The school district will incorporate this district wide parental involvement policy into its LEA plan developed under Section 1112 of the ESEA. m In carrying out the Title I, Part A parental involvement requirements, to the extent practicable, the school district and its schools will provide full opportunities for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory children, including providing information and school reports required under Section 1111 of the ESEA in an understandable and uniform format and, including alternative formats upon request, and, to the extent practicable, in a language parents understand. m If the LEA plan for Title I, Part A, developed under Section 1112 of the ESEA, is not satisfactory to the parents of participating children, the school district will submit any parent comments with the plan when the school district submits the plan to the State Department of Education. m The school district will involve the parents of children served in Title I, Part A schools in decisions about how the 1 percent of Title I, Part A funds reserved for parental involvement is spent, and will ensure that not less than 95 percent of the one percent reserved goes directly to the schools. m The school district will be governed by the following statutory definition of parental involvement, and expects that its Title I schools will carry out programs, activities and procedures in accordance with this definition: Parental involvement means the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, including ensuring— (A)  that parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning; (B)  that parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school; (C) that parents are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decisionmaking and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child; (D) the carrying out of other activities, such as those described in section 1118 of the ESEA. Please see the full Parent Involvement Policy on the website for district implementation procedures of the policy.
