Nurse’s Notes To the parents of 6th graders: Texas law requires that all 6th grade students have a Meningitis (Menactra) and TDAP booster before they can enter 7th grade. If your student has had these immunizations recently- please turn a copy into the nurse.

To ALL parents: If your student is showing symptoms of the flu...fever, cough, body aches… please keep them home to rest and recover. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without medications. Remember to practice good hand washing and cover your cough. If you have any questions please call the Nurse @ 972-350-8900.

IMPORTANT! 6th Grade NO SHOTS = NO SCHOOL! To all 6th grade students planning on going to 7th grade; Texas law requires that all students have 2 vaccinations before they can enter 7th grade. You can get the shots at your Dr.’s office or at the Denton County Health Department if you have Medicaid, CHIPS or are not insured. There will also be an opportunity to get the shots for FREE if you have Medicaid, or no insurance in May . The 2 shots that are required are: Tdap Menactra (meningitis)

Mrs. Hamric would like all students to get these vaccinations done before the end of school. After you do, bring me the documentation so that I can put them on your record and you will be cleared to get your schedule in August! If you need to check my records to see if you need any shots, please call my office: 972-350-8900 and I will help! See below for FREE shot information. ¡IMPORTANTE! 6.o Grado NO VACUNAS = ¡NO ESCUELA!

Dear Parent/Guardian: Screening of adolescents for abnormal curves in the spine is required by law in the State of Texas (HB 832). The purpose of spinal screening is to detect the signs of abnormal curves of the spine at their earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined. Scoliosis, a common spinal abnormality found in adolescents, is a sideways twisting of the spine. It is usually detected in children between 10 and 14 years of age. Kyphosis, sometimes called round back, is an exaggerated rounding of the upper back and is often confused with poor posture. Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild and only require ongoing observation by a physician when they are first diagnosed. Others worsen with time as the child grows and require active treatment such as bracing and surgery. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe deformity, which can affect a person’s appearance and health. The procedure for screening is simple. Screeners, who have been specially trained, will look at your child’s back while he/she stands and then bends forward. For this examination, boys and girls will be seen separately and individually. STUDENTS SHOULD BRING SHORTS TO SCHOOL FOR THE EXAM. ALL STUDENTS MUST REMOVE THEIR SHIRT FOR THIS EXAM. FOR THIS REASON, WE REQUIRE THAT GIRLS WEAR A HALTER TOP, TUBETOP, SPORTS BRA, OR TWO-PIECE SWIMSUIT TOP UNDERNEATH THEIR SHIRT FOR EXAM DAY. Parents will be notified of the results of the screening only if professional follow-up is necessary. This screening procedure does not replace your child’s need for regular health care and check-ups. According to state law, all students in grades 6 and 9 must receive the spinal screening. If, for religious reasons you do not wish to have your child screened, you are to submit a notarized affidavit of exemption to the nurse’s office on or before the day of screening. Students who do not present a signed, notarized form will be screened. A parent/guardian may choose to have a professional examination conducted by a physician instead of the school. The parent/guardian must submit to the school nurse documentation of a professional examination, which includes the results of a forward-bend test, on or before the day of screening. (Form on back of page) Students who do not present documentation of a professional exam will be screened. WE PLAN TO CONDUCT SCREENING AT THIS SCHOOL ON THE FOLLOWING DATE: February 27th, 2018 Thank-you for your cooperation Sincerely, Janet Baliko, RN School Nurse

Atentamente, Janet Baliko, RN

Clubs & soCieties … making a difference The NJHS is working quietly behind the scenes to do so many jobs in school, such as daily announcements, the pledge, and updating the marquee. NJHS members were out in force at the 5th grade information night. Several were present to translate in Spanish and Chin. Others escorted families for a campus tour. The evening ran smoothly with the help of these members. NJHS set a new sales record by selling a ton of "Holiday Greeting Grams" during before the holiday break. The money raised was used to buy gift cards for many deserving families.
