WELCOME

WELCOME The New Year has arrived and with it inevitable resolutions and good intentions after the glorious excess of Christmas. While many of us will resolve to treat our body as a temple, the alternative is to indulge in a feast of sensory pleasure, our Feast or Famine feature (pages 4-5) should provide the inspiration to sustain you through the winter months. With our on-going commitment to improving our service and understanding of what matters to you, in this newsletter we have included some feedback from our younger customers in Child’s View (pages 34-35) and their insight is enlightening to say the least! A child’s idea of holiday highlights often differ enormously to those of their parents and are both amusing and very telling. Happy children make for a happy holiday and with it the precious memories that last a lifetime. An African safari is one of the ultimate family adventures and our Desert to Delta (pages 10-11) feature will stir your imagination. Whether you dream of camping out under the stars and watching the Southern Cross rise from the horizon while the sounds of the bush lull you to sleep, or revel in the comfort of a luxury camp reminiscent of a bygone era, we can help you plan a holiday to suit your budget and expectations. With regard to the Ebola outbreak, it is easy to lose perspective. The vast majority of Africa is free from the virus; the reality is that the affected areas of West Africa are closer to London than they are to the game parks of Southern Africa and systems are in place in the countries of both East and Southern Africa just as there are here, to ensure that they continue to remain Ebola free. A new year is often a new beginning and what better way to start the year than to have a trip to look forward to. As we so often say, your holiday is our holiday, it matters to you and it matters to us so do contact us and let us inspire you with ideas of where to travel in the coming months.

WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA D-HOTEL MARIS, TURKEY D-Hotel Maris has five restaurants which are all superb. The indulgent Zuma restaurant centres its menu of sushi and robatayaki (Japanese barbecue) around the Asian 'izakaya' style of shared eating and drinking in a relaxed atmosphere, with long low tables, deep sofas and a fabulous cocktail bar. There are mixologists creating signature cocktails and resident DJs turning a funky soundtrack during dinner, all with a backdrop of the Aegean Islands and beaches. Nusr-Et Steakhouse launched in Istanbul in 2010 and quickly became the place for connoisseurs of meat; the hotel has its own Nusr-Et on the beachfront. Its mission is to offer great food, with perfectly-cooked, locally sourced cuts of meat which melt in the mouth. Stay 7 nights from £1,140pp, B&B. Valid 14 April-15 June 2015

FELLAH HOTEL, MOROCCO With a good climate and a unique combination of traditional and modern Moroccan food, the Fellah Hotel just outside Marrakech makes a good choice for a post New Year break. The restaurant, with its poolside

shaded patio, offers enticing meals made with a selection of locally produced and organic products some of which are grown at the property. There is also Touco’s Café run by local villagers which offers a totally authentic local street food experience. With the help of the hotel’s gardener you can pick vegetables from the garden and take them to Touco’s hut, where you will be invited to take part in cooking something special.

Head to South Africa’s Western Cape if you want to enjoy a Champagne lifestyle on a beer budget. The standard of locally produced food and drink is quite astonishing, and such a favourable exchange rate makes the cost a lot easier on your pocket. For example the Test Kitchen in Cape Town with Chef Luke-Dale Roberts at the helm made the 2014 World’s Best Restaurants list. Here the tasting menu for the gourmand works out at around £45 per person. The region is not limited to fine dining; it is bursting with superb innovative restaurants, where you can eat and drink to your heart’s content without having to worry about the bill. Stay 7 nights at the Cape Cadogan from £1,695pp, B&B. Valid until 30 April 2015

The varied dining options are a highlight; our favourite is Sails for the authentic East Asian cuisine and beautiful over water setting which is particularly romantic when lit up in the evening. WHERE WE WOULD GO WHEN

WHERE WE WOULD GO WHEN Where to go when is an often asked question. Here are some of our suggestions.

MAR/APR - Rebecca Simpson JAN/FEB - Richard Laker These are the midsummer months for the beautiful southernmost continent of Antarctica. I last visited in the early summer month of December when the ice and snow still dominated both the land and the ocean channels, but by midsummer the temperature can rise above 0 to even 5 degrees. The warming sun can occasionally allow you to shed your coat while the near perpetual daylight allows fabulous photo opportunities, even at midnight. The Antarctic experience is amazing throughout the period from November to March, but having seen the penguins prepare their nest on my last visit it would be great to see the first penguin chicks appear and seal pups venture out into the open. Given the opportunity, every seasoned traveller should visit Antarctica, it is a continent we can all learn from and how can we protect what we do not know.

Having visited the Maldives last year I was reminded of their beauty and why those common clichés are so often used. I personally believe March and April is the best time to visit as being a keen diver, the waters are crystal clear before the start of the southwest monsoon in the coming months and the early booking offers combined with complimentary nights (excluding Easter) are very attractive. With plenty of daily flights it has never been more accessible.

MAY/JUN - Gary Stevens With the waves crashing onto beautiful white sand below a clear blue sky, there is little not to love about Indonesia at this time of year, and the climate is slightly different to most other popular parts of the Far East. Lombok is a quiet, relaxed island next to buzzing Bali and is ideal for that chill-out beach break. Most resorts tend to be luxury beach bungalow or villa style properties and are usually found close to the small town of Sengiggi, which is where one of the main beaches is located, or else on the Gili Islands just off the northeast corner of the island. If you like your holiday to be active there is some amazing diving and snorkelling to be found off the Gili Islands, along with great waves for surfing off the southern coast.

WHERE WE WOULD GO WHEN

SEPT/OCT - Sarah McLennan

JUL/AUG - Rory Pilkington Last year my family and I took a summer holiday to British Columbia, Canada. It is the perfect time of year to see this magnificent country; the days are long and warm and the vast untouched wilderness is bursting at the seams. Nature is out and about in all her glory making the most of this brief period of plenty. In the fiords of Vancouver Island and the Inside Passage, bear are gorging on returning salmon, humpback whale are feeding in the shallows and orca are hunting in packs. Up in the Rocky Mountains the conditions are perfect for hiking; the snow dissipates leaving alpine meadows blooming with flowers while glacial lakes in every shade of blue reflect the huge mountains towering around them and the big sky above. This is a truly special place with endless opportunities to create long lasting memories.

My favourite place in autumn is the diverse and beautiful island of Sicily. It will have started to cool down by September so exploring some of the interesting towns and cities on the island becomes more appealing. There is so much to see, from the Baroque southeast towns of Modica, Noto, Scicli in Ragusa, and Syracuse to the Greek temples at Agrigento, Selinunte and Segesta. Sicily also has some great beaches and fantastic food which makes it a perfect destination for the autumn break. I would suggest a fly drive holiday with 3 or 4 stops en route to enable you to see the diversity of the island, perhaps starting with Syracuse in the east and working your way westwards ending with a couple of nights in Palermo.

NOV/DEC - Chris Radford I think this is a great time to head to India, as the early season months can offer some excellent rates and fewer crowds, if you travel before the Christmas holidays of course. It is a particularly good time to visit the forts and palaces of Rajasthan, as temperatures are pleasantly mild during the day so you do not need to plan sightseeing around avoiding the afternoon heat. It does get chilly at night, particularly if you are out in the desert, but properties will always have extra blankets on hand to make sure you are warm and cosy. Spend the morning in Jodhpur exploring the

majestic Mehrangarh Fort and delighting in the superb views of the blue and whitewashed houses below. Later ride into the Thar Desert for an unforgettable evening stargazing by campfire at the Wilderness Camp near Rohet.

AFRICAN DESERT & DELTA

AFRICAN DESERT & DELTA The African continent has a landmass greater than the USA, Mexico, China, Japan, India and Western Europe combined.

KALAHARI DESERT

Within this vast and spectacular continent lies land and eco-systems of great contrasts. None are greater than the awesome desert and delta regions of Botswana and Namibia, which combine excellently in a safari as the dense game and birdlife of the delta juxtapose the hidden world of life in the desert. What the desert lacks in wildlife it makes up for in spellbinding scenery.

NAMIB DESERT Stretching the length of Namibia the coastal desert is one of the most extraordinary wild landscapes in Africa. The Sossusvlei area is home to some of the highest and most evocative sand dunes in the world, sculpted by the ephemeral streams known as vleis, the deep colours of the dunes spanning

from red through pink to orange will draw out anyone’s romantic and artistic inclinations. Further north the scenery of the Skeleton Coast is no less astonishing, the land affords sustenance for remarkable Himba tribe as well as many desert adapted species both large and small. The best way to explore this otherworldly and inaccessible land is by plane and the Schoeman brothers of Skeleton Coast Safaris know this expanse better than anyone else.

This ancient semi-desert covers 900,000 square kilometres in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. With this size comes great diversity and the southern reaches in South Africa are now referred to as the green Kalahari. Its former farmland has been returned to nature with spectacular effect for both fauna and flora and it is here that one of our all-time favourite lodges, Tswalu Kalahari, has been at the forefront of the rebirth. In Botswana the desert hosts one of southern Africa’s last great migration routes; in the wet season thousands of zebra and wildebeest trek south, lured by the luscious sprouting grass. For the ultimate desert experience stay at either Jack’s or San Camp on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, where activities are geared towards an understanding of the harsh desert environment and its inhabitants; safaris combine geology, archaeology and anthropology with remarkably diverse game viewing.

AFRICAN DESERT & DELTA

CAPRIVI STRIP & BOTSWANA WETLANDS From the Angolan highlands some of southern Africa’s great rivers flow into the Kalahari Desert. The Zambezi, Chobe and Okavango all lose pace as they reach the flat of the Kalahari basin creating year round game rich marshlands and islands, like the Bwabwata National Park in Namibia’s Caprivi Strip or the Linyanti Reserve in Botswana. In the case of the Okavango River, the Kalahari is where it reaches its journey’s end to create the Okavango Delta; Africa’s biggest oasis

and dubbed the predator capital of the world. Big game may be the main attraction but the birdlife, the calm mokoro safaris and superb guides are equally enthralling. For the purest Okavango experience we would recommend the beautiful Jacana Camp in the heart of the delta, accessible only by boat when the delta is in flood. If you are looking for a real adventure try the Selinda Canoe Trail, a 4 day journey along the Selinda Spill Way which links the Okovango Delta and the Linyanti Wetlands.

IT TAKES TWO

IT TAKES TWO

If you have ever argued over which type of holiday to take then a holiday across two contrasting countries may be the answer.

INDIA & OMAN India's sheer diversity, wealth of culture, history and spectacular geography combined with Oman’s authentic sights and beautiful landscapes make the perfect holiday combination. India’s historical monument the Taj Mahal, in Agra, is a must see. Stay at Oberoi Amarvillas, located 600 metres from this testament to love; the views will sweep you away with its alluring romance at dusk and vibrant sparkle by

day. Moving to Rajasthan the wilderness of Ranthambore National Park is the perfect location to spot wild tiger along with a great diversity of wildlife and culture. Sher Bagh Tented Camp neighbouring the park, reflects the style of the 1920s and stirs nostalgic evocations of life on safari during the heyday of the Raj. In Rajasthan the Pink City of Jaipur is a colourful mix of old and new. Stay at Rambagh Palace the city’s foremost Royal Palace and retire to rooms that were once the sanctuaries of kings, princes and their guests. Jaipur’s many forts and palaces showcase this city’s history in all its glory.

From Jaipur take a direct flight to Muscat in Oman and go to Alila Jabal Akhdar in the Al Hajar mountain range, one of Oman’s most spectacular regions. You can trek through the mountains, explore caves and canyons and discover the cultural and culinary traditions of the

local community. End your journey by returning to Muscat to explore its rich cultural heritage, or relax at The Chedi Muscat which is located on a private beach, and enjoy the serene waters of the Gulf of Oman which are abundant in marine life.

TURKEY & THE MALDIVES With British Airways discontinuing its summer service to the Maldives you will have to make a stop somewhere en route, so why not stopover in Istanbul. You can enjoy this vibrant, fascinating city and immerse yourself in Ottoman culture before venturing on to the Maldives. For a short visit we recommend staying in the Sultanhmet district where Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet is the best choice. It places you directly on the doorstep of the major historical sites such as the Hagia Sophia, Sultan Ahmed Mosque (also known as the Blue Mosque) and the Topkapi Palace, as

well as some of the best local shopping spots. One word of warning, be prepared for the early morning call to prayer which takes place 2 hours before dawn. After a full day’s sightseeing in Istanbul you should have no problem sleeping on the late night flight to the Maldives. If you feel you have already done enough travelling then go for a resort in the Malé Atoll, where it is a simple boat transfer to all the islands. Our favourites are, Cocoa Island by COMO for those looking to indulge in a spa experience at the COMO Shambhala Retreat, or Huvafen Fushi if you prefer a bit of glitz. To really get away from the crowds take another flight

onwards to the Gaafu Atoll in the south and stay at the all-inclusive Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa where the corals are out of this world and it is so remote you will not see another inhabited island.

museums on 5th Avenue’s Museum Mile and head to a show on Broadway. After the excitement of the city head south to the Mexican Caribbean. Excellent New York connections to Cancun allow quick access to a host of smaller properties along the Riviera Maya, where coral

sands fringe a jungle filled with Mayan archaeological sites. Stay at the excellent boutique resort of Esencia where many of the staff are Mayan descendants who try hard to keep ancient cultures alive through language, cuisine and traditional rituals. Meanwhile the Mayan site of

Chichen Itza, one of the modern Wonders of the World, sits approximately 2 hours away. These modern and ancient destinations provide some of the most enriching two centre holidays imaginable.

OUR TRIPS

OUR TRIPS

Both Bailey Robinson and Real Holidays try to visit as many of the places we recommend as possible. Sometimes we even go together.

A JOINT ADVENTURE IN PUGLIA, ITALY Grace and Rob explored Puglia, which although not one of Italy’s traditional tourist destinations, has so much to offer with Baroque towns, olive groves, fabulous cuisine, beaches and stunning blue sea.

A visit to the UNESCO hillside town of Alberobello revealed large clusters of trulli, dry stone buildings with a cone shaped roof which were built this way in the 1600s to avoid paying taxes. Our walk around the beautiful city of Ostuni as the sun set, through a series of levels, staircases, alleys, arches and whitewashed buildings, was the perfect way to end our day. The smell of lavender swathes through the Canne Bianche hotel and relaxed us on arrival. The cool and chic interior keeps a clean and fresh look. We were lucky enough to experience a midmorning cookery lesson and can now

both make Tarelli, a small Apulian biscuit. Our recommended room here is a sea view junior suite, which has a huge balcony to make the most of this boutique hotels beachfront location.

The 5 star Borgo Egnazia conjures the feeling of a grand Italian palace, with its creamy limestone walls, baskets full of nuts and grains, hundreds of old convent keys and thousands of flickering candles. Of the three areas to Borgo Egnazia, Il Borgo and the Villas are firm family favourites however, what surprised us the most is that La Corte with its adult-only pool and romantic ambience is perfect for couples.

OUR TRIPS

JAMAICA RUM & RETREATS As Sarah discovered, James Bond was envisaged and formulated by Ian Fleming in-between entertaining guests such as Noël Coward and Winston Churchill at his GoldenEye retreat. This laid-back and glamorous mantel has been adopted by current owner Chris Blackwell, founder and former owner of Island Records who made a star of Jamaica’s most famous son, Bob Marley. You will find it a joy to discover the soul and spirit of the real Jamaica, a place of beauty and vivacious, happy people. Visit Pantrepant, Blackwell’s 1,011 hectare working farm managed by the incredibly personable Luis and have a farm-to-table lunch. Blackwell also produces rum which makes a fine cocktail to enjoy at dusk as you watch the blinkie (Jamaican name for firefly) flitter by at Firefly House, near Ocho Rios, Noël Coward’s last home built on the site of a pirate lookout. Rum and pirates meet in the form of Sir Henry

Morgan; legal pirate, buccaneer, plantation owner and Governor of Jamaica who posthumously became the figurehead of Captain Morgan’s Rum. Blackwell seems omnipresent as he also has the Oracabessa Foundation whose mission is to be a “catalyst for the

sustainable development of Oracabessa and its environs”. It runs sports programmes to produce top athletes, educates unskilled locals and works to preserve the bay around the resort creating a wildlife refuge for turtles. Back at GoldenEye work up an appetite jet skiing or paddle boarding around the private lagoon. For the more languid, retreat to the FieldSpa for a rejuvenating and energising treatment before reconvening for an obligatory sun downer. A little bit more rum can be imbibed and enjoyed amid a cacophony of crickets competing with the notes of Bob Marley in the background.

SAFARI SLEEPOUTS

SAFARI SLEEPOUTS

With only a blanket between you and the stars, a sleepout in Africa connects you with the constellations.

KENYA The Loisaba Wildlife Conservancy in the Laikipia highlands were the pioneers of the star bed concept which has been much imitated over the years, so we think it only fair we should give them

top spot. There are now two star bed locations; the original is built on a rocky kopje overlooking a tranquil valley and popular waterhole. Built on stilts into the kopje, the wooden platform faces west so you get the best view of the golden African sunsets. The beds themselves are beautifully handcrafted and come with insect netting and wheels, so you can either sleep out under the stars or under thatch, where there is also a bathroom. The beds are a joint venture between the conservancy and the local Laikipiak Maasai community who are your hosts and night watchmen for the evening.

for you, then your bed can simply be rolled back into your luxurious suite. However, if you still have a want for the open air life take a bath under the stars on your private viewing deck. With only five suites in camp, the experience is intimate and personal and in our opinion this is the most romantic camp in the Okavango Delta.

BOTSWANA Sanctuary Baines’ Camp is located in the heart of the Okavango Delta, overlooking permanent water. The pull-out star beds give the rare opportunity to safely sleep out under the stars in this predator rich country. The beauty here is that if on reflection sleeping under the stars is not

NAMIBIA If you are looking to sleep under a thick blanket of stars Little Kulala stands out as a particularly good choice. Lying in a private reserve deep in the Namib Desert there is no light pollution and excellent clear night skies. Here the star beds are on the roof above your ‘kulala’ (private pool villa) so you have the option to spend the whole night outside or to just lie out for a romantic star gaze. The guides are well educated in astronomy so will guide you through the constellations, and there is also an excellent communal telescope to get a closer

look. If sleeping under the stars, you could get up before dawn and take the early morning excursion to the staggering dunes of Sossusvlei and watch the mesmerising sunrise.

TANZANIA The legendary sleepout at Sand Rivers is more of an overall adventure than a sleeping experience. In essence this excursion involves departing camp on foot for a walking safari, but instead of returning back to the lodge at dusk you walk to a remote sleepout location. Normally set on a dry river bed, where you will have a delicious dinner, the camp consists of a comfortable safari bedroll covered by a spacious mosquito net and nearby is a warm bucket shower and short drop loo. The next day you will take the leisurely walk back to camp stopping for a light bush lunch along

the way. We cannot recommend this adventure highly enough, the Selous is made for walking and the sleepout experience combined with the beautiful scenery and exciting game encounters will be a memory for years to come.

DINING WITH A DIFFERENCE

DINING WITH A DIFFERENCE

Sometimes a dining experience is about more than just the food.

ANANTARA KIHAVAH, MALDIVES Anantara Kihavah Sea Restaurant is part of the quartet of Anantara’s signature Sea, Fire, Salt, Sky dining complex. The underwater dining room sits at the reef drop off allowing you to watch passing turtle, fish and shark. It may be slightly incongruous to eat a three course lobster lunch while one shuffles by, but the

molten chocolate brownie dessert sweetens the experience. Each table has a book of Maldivian reef fish and a great game between courses is to guess what has just swum past. You can experience the sensation of diving without even getting your feet wet. As an accompaniment to the food there are 250 labels and classic vintages from 14 different countries which fill the underwater wine cellar. At night spotlights illuminate the water but the best viewing is during daylight hours.

SONEVA KIRI, THAILAND Usually when someone talks about taking dining to new heights it is only the food they are referring to. However, at Soneva Kiri dining takes place 5 metres in the air as you are comfortably seated in a bamboo pod and hoisted high into the tropical foliage of Koh Kood’s ancient rainforest. Your dinner is delivered by a ‘flying’ waiter harnessed to a zip line, whose skill provides excellent entertainment. Menus are jungle themed with choices including the Canapé in the Canopy of marinated white fish spiked with red fruits. You can gaze across the

lush foliage out to the boulder covered shoreline dancing with gentle waves while you savour your food. There are few places where you have a front row seat of nature’s wonders while dining and viewing a virtual trapeze act.

DINING WITH A DIFFERENCE

CAMPI YA KANZI, KENYA A memorable addition to an African safari is to dine below the earth’s surface with flaming torches, lanterns and local Maasai. Not far from Campi Ya Kanzi there is a huge cavern where, in the past, Maasai hid the livestock they raided from the nearby Wakamba tribesmen who lived on the other side of the Chyulu Hills. Now this cave is the site for an incredible dinner location which becomes a half day event, as in the afternoon you walk to the cave just 45 minutes from camp and enter through a huge ‘lava tube’

with two big openings on its ceiling. A safari fire is set underneath one of the openings and a table is strewn with candles to create the ambience for the evening. Before dinner is served local Maasai men and women entertain you with traditional forms of singing and dancing. This atmosphere and experience is completely unforgettable.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY We love the holidays we organise and it would appear our customers do too.

Mrs Caroline Evans returns to LE SIRENUSE, ITALY Le Sirenuse is such an outstanding hotel my husband and I have just taken our third visit there. We are utterly compelled to write describing the wonderful experience we enjoyed yet again. Le Sirenuse is situated in the beautiful town of Positano in Italy. It holds a commanding position overlooking the town with outstanding sea views, where on many occasions we have enjoyed truly amazing sunsets. The interiors are also a joy as the public rooms are spacious and furnished

with exquisite antiques; here is the chance to sit in private contemplation enjoying a pre-dinner drink or afternoon tea. There is a great choice of bedrooms, all beautifully appointed and never disappointing both in size and decor.

The food is memorable; a must is the seafood dinner at the Champagne bar; truly remarkable. The main restaurant overlooks the town with sea views and is complemented by fantastic local cuisine and a very comprehensive wine list. It all makes for a really amazing dining experience. Outside the pool is great for cooling down and is perfected by a wellstocked pool bar, where a refreshing drink can be enjoyed together with a light lunch. A relaxing time is assured at the impeccable spa.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

The Irvine family took a safari to the VICTORIA FALLS, SABI SANDS, SOUTHERN KALAHARI and the BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO. At Tongabezi Lodge in Zambia there were loads of activities to keep us all happy. The kids particularly enjoyed fishing, spotting hippo and lunching out on an island. Victoria Falls is spectacular and made all the more enjoyable by our knowledgeable guide. We loved having breakfast beside the Zambezi and spotting crocs and hippo from the safety of the bank.

Nottens Bush Camp in the Sabi Sands of South Africa was relaxed and intimate, but incredibly well organised. Each day there was an excursion just for the children. I loved the lap-pool, which was a great antidote to sitting in a land-cruiser. We saw loads of game, with particularly good sightings of elephant, lion, leopard and rhino. Our driver had worked at Nottens for about 20 years, so there wasn't really anything he didn't know. When we moved on to Tswalu Kalahari it became clear why Bailey Robinson had suggested this as it was totally different from the other camps as was

the scenery. Our guide Jaques and tracker Piet were excellent and contributed in large part towards the good time we had. They were fantastic with the children and found some exciting things for them to do apart from the game drives such as archery and making casts of lion paws. Highlights were probably watching the wild dog pups at play and walking with the meerkats, but we also saw many other animals which were not at Sabi Sands. The fabulous vast views we were treated to at sundowner time are never to be forgotten. I was thoroughly spoilt throughout the trip, clearly everyone had been wellprimed. I was given three birthday cakes in different places (all chocolate) and several bottles of bubbly. Thank you too for our bottle on the last night in Mozambique. I will never forget the way the waiters at Azura sang Happy Birthday, lively to say the least!

GREEK MAINLAND & ISLANDS

GREEK MAINLAND & ISLANDS Greece has a staggering 6,000 islands but only 227 are inhabited. So do you choose cultural mainland or laid-back island life?

HALKIDIKI Visitors to mainland Halkidiki are usually heading for its white sand beaches and luxury spa resorts, but if you stay at Ikos Oceania Club you may be surprised to learn about the range of cultural excursions you can do from the hotel. To the east you will find Mount Athos, a monastic republic which is off limits to all but the ruling monks and a handful of males who have obtained a valid permit. However, boat trips can be arranged allowing you to view and photograph the fantastic monasteries from the sea. Heading west you can visit Vergina, the former capital of ancient Macedonia and one of the most historic

places in Greece. Aside from the remains of the palace, lavishly decorated with mosaics, you will find the tomb of King Philip, father of Alexander the Great.

PELOPONNESE This southern peninsula causes debate as to whether it is mainland or an island due to the presence of the Corinth Canal, either way it is packed with cultural riches. Ancient sites include the Homeric palaces of Agamemnon and Nestor as well as the best preserved of all Greek theatres at Epidaurus. If you like your ruins to be more intact then the Venetian, Frankish and Turkish castles at Nafplion, Methoni and ancient Corinth

Due to its size a cultural visit to the Peloponnese is best experienced as part of a fly-drive, but a stay at Amanzo’e would put you in a prime position for exploring the best the region has to offer.

Despite being located south of Corfu it is one of the less visited islands with its draw being the laid-back way of life, the charming coastal villages, the many beaches and the beautiful clear sea that will entice you in for a pre-breakfast swim. You can also hire small boats to visit some of the more inaccessible beaches and its sister island, Antipaxos, is a short sea taxi ride away where you will find two of the finest sandy beaches in Europe. CHILD’S EYE VIEW

CHILD’S EYE VIEW The world through the innocence of a child’s eyes may not always be what we expect.

BORNEO by Phoebe, aged 11 Borneo was spectacular! Every day was a new adventure and sometimes I felt like I was in a movie because it was so amazing and sometimes a bit scary. We stayed with a tribe in the jungle and learnt how they live and even how to use a blowpipe. We played tag and swam in the river with the children and had food cooked in bamboo tubes over a fire. I had no idea what we ate but it was fresh from the jungle and delicious. We were really lucky and saw orang-utan, pygmy elephant and loads of other animals and birds in the wild. We found human skulls on the Coffin Cliffs and were nibbled by fish as we

swam in a waterhole but the best fun was tubing in tractor tyres down the river through the jungle. We shot through rapids which was awesome fun particularly because mummy and daddy couldn't keep up with us. I loved Borneo and can't wait to go back and help to protect the endangered animals.

DAIOS COVE LUXURY RESORT & VILLAS, CRETE by Ellie, aged 7 The beach was so cool. Me and my dad jumped off the rocks and it was amazing. There were urchins on the rocks, and in some places you could see the fish swimming. We also met a lovely ginger cat there – we named it beach cat and saw it every day. The hot chocolate and yummy lunch at the beach was outstanding and the staff were all very friendly. The breakfast was in a lovely restaurant – there was lots to choose from and we had cakes and fruit and bacon for breakfast. In the evening they did pepper soup which was amazing.

We had a ride on the inflatable, and we hired a pedalo and went a long way out on it. They are hard work (for daddy!) Every day was ended with a bath in the biggest bath ever.

OMAN by Charlotte, aged 5 I went to the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa, Oman last year with my family. I had a fun time. My favourite things were travelling on the lazy river every day with my dad and my little sister Florence in big donuts, playing on the sandy beach, exploring the pirate ship and the kids club. I made lots of things at the club, I had my hands painted with henna and I learned to write my name in Arabic. I showed my class my Arabic name when I got home. There was lots to do and the food was yummy. I loved the smoothies at the beach restaurant. It was sunny every day. We are going again next year. Everyone loved it.

SIGNATURE COCKTAILS

SIGNATURE COCKTAILS Next time you enjoy a tipple you might want to think where it originated.

WALDORF ASTORIA, USA

PALAZZO AVINO, ITALY

TAJ MAHAL PALACE, INDIA

The Waldorf Astoria is probably one of the most famous hotels in New York and is a byword for luxury hotels in Manhattan. Within its lobby is the famous Peacock Alley, a bar and restaurant that is renowned as being one of the places in the city ‘to see and be seen’ for high society and celebrities. ‘The Bronx’ cocktail was envisaged at the hotel in the early 1900s and was originally created as a twist on the classic Martini, with a dash of orange bitters added to the gin and equal measures of French and Italian vermouths. It has been refined with the addition of a dash of orange juice and is the ultimate cocktail of choice for the in-crowd.

The Lobster & Martini Bar at Palazzo Avino in Ravello has a menu of over 65 different kinds of martinis, one being the Fish Martini with wasabi and a tuna skewer. For the ultimate indulgence at €160, taste the luxury Gold Martini made with Kauffman Luxury Vintage vodka, lemon liqueur, vanilla, saffron and gold powder. As a tribute to Marilyn Monroe a few drops of her favourite perfume Chanel No5 has been added to a combination of peach nectar liqueur, pineapple puree, raspberry sauce and a dash of Champagne.

In 1933 two American sailors docked at The Gateway of India and headed to the Harbour Bar at the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai to celebrate the end of Prohibition in the US. The bartender took two wine glasses filled with sliced fruits and gin and perched them at an angle over tiny tea-lamps; another glass contained freshly squeezed fruit juice mixed with ice. He set the alcohol in the wine glass on fire and poured that burning liquid into the fruit juice. The sailors named it ‘From the Harbour

Since 1933’. Almost a century later, watching the creation of this wonderful cocktail at your table is a show in itself.
