REDBIRDS HOST MVC’S FIRST- AND SECOND-PLACE TEAMS The Illinois State women’s basketball team looks to continue its ascent of the Missouri Valley Conference standings with games against the MVC’s first- and second-place teams this weekend on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. After climbing to seventh place in the league standings after wins in three of their past five games, the Redbirds host league-leading Drake on Friday and second-place Northern Iowa on Sunday. Both games are set for 7 p.m. starts. Illinois State (6-15, 4-6 MVC) returns to action this weekend after securing a 73-62 win over visiting Indiana State on Feb. 5, as Shakeela Fowler’s 19 points led all players. The Redbirds made a season-high 3-pointers, and the team’s 60 percent (9-for-15) mark from three-point territory was the best percentage turned in by a Valley team this season. Fowler was joined by four other Redbirds scoring in double figures in the win, as Octavia Crump scored 15, Colleene Smith tallied 14, Katrina Beck added 11 and Viria Livingston chipped in 10.

ILLINOIS STATE-DRAKE SERIES Drake holds a slight edge in the all-time series against Illinois State, with 37 wins against 35 losses. DRAKE SCOUTING REPORT Drake’s potent offense leads the Valley at 80.6 points per game – 10 more points than the next highest-scoring team. Junior forward Lizzy Wendell leads the way with a Valley-high 20.3 points per game scoring average, while freshman forward Sara Rhine adds 12.6 points per game off the bench, thanks to a league-best 62.1 field goal percentage. Junior guard Caitlin Ingle leads the Valley in assists, at 6.7 per contest. ILLINOIS STATE-NORTHERN IOWA SERIES Illinois State is 42-30 all-time against the Panthers. NORTHERN IOWA SCOUTING REPORT Northern Iowa relies on strong defense and three-point shooting. The Panthers allow the second-fewest points (59.8 per game) among Valley teams, while owning the league’s best turnover margin (plus-3.32) and turnover-to-assist ratio (1.2). Northern Iowa averages a league-high 7.8 triples per game, with Madison Weekly (17.0 ppg) and Amber Sorenson (13.8 ppg) both ranking among the league’s top shooters from behind the three-point arc. GIVE ME FIVE Five Redbirds scored in double figures in Illinois State’s 73-62 win over Indiana State on Feb. 5 on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena, marking the first time Illinois State had five players reach double figures in scoring in over three years. Shakeela Fowler led the way with 19 points, while Colleene Smith and Octavia Crump added 14 and 15 points, respectively. Katrina Beck (11 points) and Viria Livingston (10) also reached double figures, marking the first time five Illinois State players reached double figures since Jan. 19, 2013, against Southern Illinois. RAINING THREES The Redbirds connected on a season-high nine 3-pointers in a 73-62 win over Indiana State on Feb. 5 on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. The Redbirds were 9-for-15 from behind the three-point line, good enough for a 60 percent mark, the best single-game percentage turned in by a Missouri Valley Conference team during the 2015-16 season. TEAM EFFORT ON THE BOARDS With only one player on its roster standing taller than six feet, the Redbirds rely on a team rebounding effort. Despite often playing against taller opponents, three Redbirds rank among the top 15 players in the Missouri Valley Conference in rebounding. Senior Colleene Smith (6.3 rpg), freshman Viria Livingston (6.1 rpg) and senior Octavia Crump (5.5 rpg) all play key roles in the rebounding department for the Redbirds. MADE OF STEAL Illinois State continues to lead the MVC in steals, as the Redbirds are grabbing 10.0 steals per game overall, and 10.7 steals per game in Missouri Valley Conference play. Octavia Crump (1.9 spg) and Colleene Smith (1.8 spg), rank fourth and eighth, respectively, among league players.

REDBIRDS PICKED 10TH IN MVC The Illinois State women’s basketball team was projected to finish 10th in the Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll for the 2015-16 season, as voted on by the league’s head coaches, sports information directors and media. Illinois State received 48 votes in the poll with its 10th-place selection, a change of pace since ISU has been picked in the top-five in 19 of the 33 preseason polls in conference history. It is the first time in school history that the Redbirds have been picked to finish 10th. Missouri State is the preseason favorite to win the conference with 373 points and 22 first-place votes, and is followed by Drake with 347 points and 15 first-place votes. Northern Iowa (320), Southern Illinois (297) and Wichita State (214) round out the top-five teams, collecting one first-place vote apiece. Evansville is projected to finish sixth (182), with Indiana State (151) following in seventh place. Loyola (142) and Bradley (126) were selected to finish in eighth and ninth, respectively. A LEGEND RETURNS HOME Redbird legend Cathy Boswell has joined the Illinois State women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2015-16 season. Boswell came to Illinois State as a 16-year-old freshman and left as the school’s all-time leader in scoring and rebounds. She has 31 years of competitive basketball experience, including 24 years of professional basketball. Most recently, Boswell was the head coach of the Tenerife Club in Spain for two seasons. Boswell graduated from Joliet West High School in just three years, and the Shorewood, Illinois, native burst onto the scene in her first two seasons at Illinois State, leading the Redbirds to a 51-18 record, an AIAW State Championship and a WNIT bid. She eclipsed 1,000 points in her first two years and still holds the ISU freshman and sophomore records for scoring average, field goals and rebounds. A WBCA All-American in 1982 and 1983, Boswell led the Redbirds to 90 wins in her career. She was the first Redbird to eclipse 2,000 points. Boswell is the ISU career record-holder in field goals, rebounding average, and is in the top-10 in scoring, assists, blocks and steals. Boswell is a three-time hall of fame inductee, including Joliet West High School, Missouri Valley Conference and Illinois State Athletics Percy Family Hall of Fame. Her ISU number is retired and hanging in the rafters of Redbird Arena. IN-SEASON MEDIA CONFERENCES ISU Athletics Communications will host eight in-season media conferences during the 2015-16 season. Each conference will feature head coach Barb Smith and a member of the ISU basketball team. The media conferences start at 1:15 p.m., and the remaining scheduled dates are: Feb. 23 and March 1. COACHES SHOWS The Illinois State Basketball Coaches Shows have been set for the 2015-16 men’s and women’s basketball seasons. The Coaches Shows will be held at Pub II in Normal, on Monday nights throughout the season, sponsored by WJBC. The final combined Coaches Show will be Feb. 15. Head women’s coach Barb Smith will go on air at 6 p.m., followed by head men’s coach Dan Muller at 7 p.m. Both shows will last an hour and feature a player guest. The final two editions of the Coaches Show are new for the 2015-16 season, as each team will have a special Monday edition prior to its Missouri Valley Conference Championship. The women’s will air on Monday, March 7, from 6-7 p.m. THE SMITH ERA The 2015-16 Illinois State women’s basketball team will be led by head coach Barb Smith, as she begins her third season at the helm of the Redbirds. Smith has 27 years of Division I collegiate coaching experience, and is the seventh head coach in Illinois State history. Smith is known as a prominent recruiter, with over 10 top-20 nationallyranked classes. Most recently, Smith spent the 2012-13 season at Saint Louis as the associate head coach, recruiting coordinator and offensive coordinator. At SLU, Smith directed and organized all recruiting activities, designed and implemented offensive strategies and was responsible for guard development. Smith has also been an assistant coach at Minnesota, California and Colorado. During Smith’s five seasons (1997-2002) as the head coach at San Diego State, the Aztecs landed the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history and featured guard Claire Swinbank, the team’s first WNBA prospect. Smith also built SDSU into one of the Mountain West Conference’s top-defensive teams, with the 2000-01 Aztecs finishing second in the league in defense. UNIFORM PATCH Illinois State student-athletes, coaches and staff are sporting the patch (right) in memory of the SEVEN men Illinois State and the Bloomington-Normal community lost on April 7, 2015. The patch is dedicated to the memory of the SEVEN staff and friends of Illinois State University – including associate head men’s basketball coach Torrey Ward and deputy director of athletics Aaron Leetch – who perished in an airplane crash on April 7, 2015. The crash occurred while approaching the Central Illinois Regional Airport near Bloomington, Illinois. The men were returning from the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship game in Indianapolis, Indiana. GAMES 22 & 23 // DRAKE & NORTHERN IOWA
