358 W 46TH ST DESCRIPTION TIMES SQUARE

THEATER DISTRICT

Formerly named Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in April 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the newly erected Times Building, which is now called One Times Square and is the site of the annual ball drop on New Year's Eve. Times Square is the intersection of spectators and performers, tourists and locals; all the diversity of the city, the country, and the world interacting. Times Square accommodates many activities both planned and spontaneous, and connects streetscapes, underground passages, and penthouses. Finally there are the layers of history that lie under the streets and behind the facades of theaters, diners and stores. The density and the congestion are part of what is authentic to a place where art, life and commerce quite literally collide. Much of what constitutes modern American culture has been invented and reinvented, tested, and displayed in the few blocks that make up the Times Square district. This is where Americans devise new ways to entertain themselves. By 1928, some 264 shows were produced in 76 theaters in Times Square. These theaters showcased not old-world opera, but the new popular culture born of America’s immigrant stew – vaudeville and musicals, jazz and the movies. Today it remains the busiest theater district in the world, and is also home to MTV, ABC, B.B. Kings, Hard Rock Cafe, Best Buy Theater, and Madame Tussaud’s. Times Square is also a primary driver of the economy in New York City, providing 11% of the economic output and 10% of the total jobs while only occupying 0.1% of the land area. There are currently 170,000 workers earning over $8 billion annually within the district. Lastly, direct spending on hotels, entertainment and retail of over $4.8 billion makes Times Square one of the greatest places to do business in the United States. Retail spending alone accounted for $1.7 billion in sales broken down into the following categories: 43% Eating & Drinking Places; 17% Deli, Grocery & Convenience; 14% Electronics; 12% Apparel & Accessory Stores; 8% Specialty Retail & Gift Shops; and lastly 6% General Merchandise & Other Times Square is a major commercial intersection in Midtown Manhattan at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. Times Square, iconified as "The Crossroads of the World" and the "The Great White Way", is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway theater district, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. Times Square is the world's most visited tourist attraction, bringing in over 39 million visitors annually.

The Theatre District is an area in Midtown Manhattan where most Broadway theatres are located, as well as many other theatres, movie theatres, restaurants, hotels and other places of entertainment. It extends from 40th Street to 54th Street, and from west of Sixth Avenue to east of Eighth Avenue, and includes Times Square. The City of New York defines the "Theater Subdistrict" for zoning purposes to extend from 40th Street to 57th Street and from Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue, with an additional area west of Eighth Avenue from 42nd Street to 45th Street. The Great White Way is the name given to the section of Broadway which runs through the Theater District

RESTAURANT ROW Restaurant Row, on 46th Street between Broadway and 9th Avenue, is the quintessential example of everything that makes the Crossroads of the World unique. On this one block stretch, you can enjoy cuisine from all over the world, sample the styles of celebrity chefs like B. Smith and Lidia Bastianich, and gaze at Broadway Stars in some of their favorite haunts. Restaurant Row is a veritable United Nations of dining. In the mood for Italian? Historic Barbetta is almost as old as Times Square itself. The restaurant celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2006, and is still owned by the family who opened its doors just three years after New Yorkers rode their first subway. Other great Italian options include Becco, Fiorentina, Lattanzi, or La Rivista. Or perhaps a French feast is more to your taste? Check out Le Rivage. Never had an organic burger? You don't know what you're missing! Head to Bareburger post-haste. Or enjoy a pretheater nosh at Bangkok House (Thai), Broadway Joe (steakhouse), B. Smith's (southern-style USA), Village Pourhouse (bar & grill), Meson Sevilla (Spanish), the House of Brews (USA) and more.
