Introduction: The 3M Climate Guide is one of a series of resources that provide recommendations for use of 3M™ Stamark™ Pavement Marking Tapes based on adhesion factors. The guide establishes start and end dates for the recommended application season based on the specific climate data in the location of the road to be marked. The following maps provide an “application window” that when followed, will help ensure a successful application. The 3M Climate Guide and 3M Road Surface Guide supplement the 3M Adhesion Guide, eliminating certain applications from the window based on more clearly defined road surface and climate conditions.

Road Characteristics / Application Technique

The Adhesion Guide defines conditions and guidelines to ensure proper adhesion of pavement marking tapes. By rank ordering conditions within an acceptable 3 Adhesion Guide “application window”, the guide 3Road Surface Guide differentiates the most reliable applications from those nearing the Product Family acceptability limit. It also defines Application Window conditions that are unacceptable for proper adhesion, in which case the 3M pavement marking tapes should not be applied. Im

The Road Surface Guide describes common surface distresses for pavements, provides guidelines for determining the suitability of surfaces for application of 3M tapes and includes application recommendations on roads with these conditions.

For information about application procedures, consult Information Folder 5.7 (Stamark products) or 3.2 (Scotch-Lane products). For further information, contact 3M Traffic Control Materials Division at 1-800553-1380. Follow the instructions to reach Technical Service for Pavement Markings. In Canada call 1-519-452-6201.

3 Climate Guide

Included in this guide are two maps that define the start and end dates for application of 3M™ Stamark™ Tapes. The following instructions explain how to use the maps. 1) From the “start date map”, locate the area where the tape application will occur. Find the appropriate start date based on the color of the area and the matching color legend with the date at the bottom of the map. 2) From the “end date map”, locate the area where the tape application will occur. Find the appropriate end date based on the color of the area and the matching color legend with the date at the bottom of the map. IMPORTANT: The dates represent the “application window” for overlay applications with Stamark tape. 3M will not be held accountable for applications made outside of these recommendations 3) If your state appears to be divided between one or more start or end dates, refer to the list of counties in this booklet for more detailed information. As shown in the example below, start dates are green and end dates are red.

4) If the application you are referencing in the Adhesion Guide shows the Climate Guide symbol " C " next to it, then application is not recommended in areas with an end date prior to October 1 (see 3M Climate Guide End Dates map). This includes applications made on ACC 0-3 days old and applications over existing 3M tape. Longline Adhesion Chart
