Patriot League Notebook THE TOP FIVE @PATRIOTLEAGUE NOTES

*Six Patriot League field hockey teams got into the win column on the opening weekend of the 2015 regular season. *American posted the top win of the weekend with a 3-2 triumph at No. 16 Old Dominion on Sunday. *Patriot League teams were 5-1 at home with Lafayette, Bucknell, Boston University, Holy Cross and Lehigh all winning. *Lafayette has the most active week ahead with three games, including a home date with Siena on Tuesday. *Bucknell will be the first Patriot League team to face a top-10 opponent when it hosts No. 7 Penn State on Sunday.

Six Patriot League Squads Post First Victory of 2015

It didn’t take long for the majority of Patriot League squads to earn their first win as six posted a victory over the weekend. American was the only one to do so on the road, and the Eagles had the top win of the weekend as they beat No. 16 Old Dominion 3-2 on Sunday. Lafayette, Bucknell, Boston University, Holy Cross and Lehigh all won their home openers as Patriot League squads combined for a 5-1 home mark on the opening weekend. Holy Cross’ victory over Siena gave Head Coach Lindsay Jackson her first Division I win in her debut for the Crusaders.

Five Teams with Multiple Games in the Next Week

Five of the seven Patriot League teams will play a pair of games over the next week, with Lafayette looking at three contests beginning with Tuesday’s home tilt with Siena. American hosts both Brown and Appalchian State over the weekend, while Holy Cross has a home matchup with Harvard on Friday. Lafayette and Colgate each have a pair of weekend road games, while No. 20 Boston University takes on Hofstra on Saturday and visits Maine on Monday, both in Orono. Bucknell and Lehigh each play a single game, and the Bison have a marquee matchup as they host No. 7 Penn State Sunday on PLN.

Preseason Honors

Boston University earned all 12 available first-place votes from the other schools in the Patriot League to take first place in the field hockey preseason poll with 72 points. American followed with 61 points, while defending regular-season champion Bucknell came in third with 53 points. Lafayette (38), Colgate (35), Lehigh (20) and Holy Cross (15) rounded out the poll order. Boston University’s Sofi Laurito was named the League’s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and her classmate, Rachel Coll, was the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. They were joined on the Preseason All-League Team by teammates Amanda Cassera and Hester van der Laan, American’s Kate McBeath and Angela Virtu, Bucknell’s Amy Mucelli and Anna Wills, Holy Cross’ Michelle McNeil, Lafayette’s Amanda Magadan Lehigh’s Gabby Tofig.
