WHL Year End Party Saturday, April 16, 2016 Grand Gardens North Doors Open @ 6:00pm Dinner @ 7:00pm Awards and Entertainment Begin @ 7:10pm

A Brief History of the WHL… YEAR ONE (2001-2002)  The Women’s Hockey League started in January, 2002.  52 players registered that year (48 skaters and 4 goalies). Cost to play was $50.  With no ice available in SSM, the league played in Echo Bay on the natural ice surface (R.I.P.)  There were 2 games per week every Monday night until the ice melted in March.  Teams played 9 games that year plus two playoff games.  There were 2 volunteer referees (Sharon & Lorie) and no timekeepers. The refs would hop the boards to work the clock and write down the goals, assists and penalties.  The league budget that year was $2500 (goalies had to pay). The Year End Party cost $849. YEAR FIFTEEN (2015-2016)  A record number of players and teams again this year.  377 players registered (350 skaters + 26 goalies). Cost to play = $325. Goalies are free.  The league moved from Echo Bay to the city of SSM at the start of the 2005-06 season.  There are now about 19 games per week (9 at city rinks, 7 at Rankin and 3 at Desbarats).  Teams play 24-28 league games over the course of an 8-month season.  In addition, they also play in the Early Bird Tournament plus League Playoffs in April.  There are 9 female referees, 4 male referees and 6 timekeepers, all of whom now get paid.  League budget this year = $130,409. The Year End Party will cost around $10,500.

Rob Hankinson Award Named in honour of Rob Hankinson (“Super Hank”) who refereed in the Women’s Hockey League for 8 seasons (2005-2013). Rob was best known for his easy-going nature, his dependability and his willingness to referee more games in a week than most refs did in a month (Super Hank). His quirky little giggle, his smile and his favourite saying “It’s all good,” is etched in our memories. He never complained or got upset; just went about his job quietly and always with a smile. Rob died of brain cancer on October 29, 2013 at the age of 54. He is sadly missed by the WHL Referees and Timekeepers and all those who knew him.

Selected by the WHL Referees & Timekeepers, this award is presented to the WHL referee, timekeeper, player or volunteer who best exhibits Rob’s good nature, dedication and loyal commitment to the Women’s Hockey League.

“IT’S ALL GOOD!” The recipient of the “Super Hank” Award will be announced at the Year End Party

**************************************************** Kit Kat Captain’s Award Anita Kovac

#7 White Oak Paint

Named in honour of Anita Kovac (Kit Kat), a player and captain in the WHL from 2002-2007. In 2005 Kit Kat convinced her employer at White Oak Paint, Dan Travaglini, to sponsor a team. She cocaptained that team for 3 seasons. Anita died February 2, 2009 at 37 years of age from a brain aneurysm. Her #7 “Kit Kat” jersey is still worn by fellow WHLers, honouring her memory and her contributions to the league.

Nominated by the players and presented to the Captain who best displays leadership, sportsmanship, how to have fun and whose overall contribution leads to the betterment of the Women’s Hockey League.
