October 8 – 9 2016 TWENTY- EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SERRA VOCATION PRAYER CHALICE

“Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of Priests” Cure of Ars St. John Marie Vianney A true example of a pastor at the service of Christ’s flock Most gracious Heavenly Father, we thank you for our faithful priests and bishops, whose spiritual fatherhood and example of fidelity, selfsacrifice, and devotion is so vital to the faith of your people. May our spiritual fathers be guided by the example of St. John Vianney. Give them valiant faith in the face of confusion and conflict, hope in time of trouble and sorrow, and steadfast love for you, for their families, and for all your people throughout the world. May the light of your Truth shine through their lives and their good works. Assist all spiritual fathers, that through your Grace they may steadily grow in holiness and in knowledge and understanding of your Truth. May they generously impart this knowledge to those who rely on them. Through Christ our Lord. Amen Thank you for praying for vocations.

The Spectacular Versus the Ordinary The passage from Kings and the Gospel passage recount healings of people with leprosy. When the prophet Elisha gave Naaman, the leper, a simple command to wash in the river Jordan seven times, Naaman expected a more spectacular command. However, he obeyed this and was cleansed of his leprosy. He returned with his whole retinue with gratitude to the man of God, Elisha. Today’s gospel had ten lepers cured of their leprosy by Jesus but only one, a Samaritan, returning to give thanks to Jesus. Both of these readings emphasize the generosity with which mercy is showered upon all and the principle of universality, God’s plan to save the world excluding no one. These readings present God’s will revealed in every situation of our everyday life. His will is what He actually wills to send us each day in the way of circumstances, places, people, and problems. May we receive the grace to be conscious of God’s presence in our daily activities.

I have found an abbreviated version designed for groups (only 13 pages). I think we could use it for the morning and really get a good understanding of the Pope’s message and the desire of his all-embracing heart. Could you afford to give the morning to this pursuit? I believe God will bless us in our effort. I’m up for it! Are you? Donation: $20, includes lunch and all materials. I’d love to introduce you to him with the help of Margaret Silf, an Ignatian expert. St. Ignatius wasn’t always heroic and holy; he was flawed and fallible, just like us. As we get to know him, we will realize that our very human faults and imperfect behavior do not prevent us from receiving God’s grace; rather, knowing our weaknesses and giving ourselves over to the Holy Spirit can reveal the God within us and the path before us. Limited to 7 people; please register early. Donation: $35, includes lunch and book MORNINGS WITH MERTON DELIGHT IN THE BEAUTY OF GOD’S CREATION Monday, October 17 9:00–11:00AM Open your eyes, ears and hearts to God’s glory in nature. October 8 – 9 2016 TWENTY- EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Living the Good News Today “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” In every family, there are times when loved ones become seriously ill. Those moments bring with them multiple medical appointments, diagnostic tests, prescription of medications and treatment plans, and, sometimes, side effects that can add to the pain of the illness. When these circumstances happen in families, it is not uncommon for us to reach out to others and ask for prayers—for healing and comfort, strength and courage, and solidarity during the vigil of battling illness. How important is our faith during such challenging life experiences! In both the first reading from the Book of Kings and the Gospel this weekend, people who were afflicted with leprosy desired to be healed. God heard their cries for help. Through Naaman’s interaction with the prophet Elisha and the ten lepers with Jesus, all were healed. Jesus was on a long journey from Galilee to Jerusalem when he met the band of lepers, who appealed to him from a distance with the cry: “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” There is so much to learn from Jesus about how to show mercy to others. What is striking about the two stories, however, is that the expression of gratitude for their healing came from two foreigners: Naaman the Syrian and the one leper (of ten) who was a Samaritan. Jesus even noted that it was a foreigner who had returned to give thanks to God! For both of them, the healing experience with the living God had transformed their faith. While on a recent vacation with my family, I decided to read again the book He Leadeth Me by Jesuit Fr. Walter Ciszek about his experiences as a young priest in eastern Poland in 1939, just two years after his ordination. After witnessing the deportation of many people on the disputed eastern borders with Russia, Fr. Ciszek felt called to minister to those who were taken away, so he relocated into the Russian-controlled territory. His faithful ministry led to his arrest/imprisonment in the Lubyanka prison in 1941 for four years. His ordeal did not end with the war. While in prison, he faithfully ministered to others through prayer, the liturgy, confessions, and spiritual direction. During the four years of the war, he was tortured and mistreated in situations. He was able to sustain others with hope through his faith. His family did not know what had happened to him, and so they and the Jesuit community believed him to be dead. Just as St. Paul wrote of his experiences to Timothy in this weekend’s epistle, Fr. Ciszek also suffered for Christ, even to the point of chains, having been sentenced for espionage to 15 years of hard labor in a Russian gulag. With every page that I have re-read in this book, I am

repeatedly inspired by the humility, fidelity, and gratitude of this wonderful priest who heard God calling him to live the Good News so that others might be healed. In April 1955, Fr. Ciszek was released from prison with restrictions in the city of Norilsk and wrote to his sisters. After the KGB learned that he had secretly established mission parishes there, he was forcibly moved to Akaban in 1958, where he worked as a car mechanic for four more years and finally heard from his sisters in 1963. That year, the US State Department arranged for a prisoner exchange and his release. It is so easy to formulate intercessory prayers in which we ask God to have mercy on us and pay attention to particular needs. Prayers of gratitude, though, require more attentiveness and deliberate awareness of God at work in our lives, in both large and small matters. Many people asked Fr. Ciszek how he had endured those many years of physical and mental torture. In his book, he left us this legacy: “There was but one will that directed all things, God's will. I had only to see it, to discern it in every circumstance in which I found myself, and let myself be ruled by it. God is in all things, sustains all things, directs all things. To discern this in every situation and circumstance, to see His will in all things, was to accept each circumstance and situation and let oneself be borne along in perfect confidence and trust. Nothing could separate me from Him, because He was in all things. No danger could threaten me, no fear could shake me, except the fear of losing sight of Him. The future, hidden as it was, was hidden in His will and therefore acceptable to me no matter what it might bring. The past, with all its failures, was not forgotten; it remained to remind me of the weakness of human nature and the folly of putting any faith in self. But it no longer depressed me. I looked no longer to self to guide me, relied on it no longer in any way, so it could not again fail me. By renouncing, finally and completely, all control of my life and future destiny, I was relieved as a consequence of all responsibility. I was freed thereby from anxiety and worry, from every tension, and could float serenely upon the tide of God's sustaining providence in perfect peace of soul.”

This weekend, our Scripture take-away can be an attitude of gratitude, strengthened by the witness of St. Paul and Fr. Ciszek, who cherished Jesus’ words: “Your faith has saved you.”
