Basic Training Offered at the University of Scouting: Cub Scout Basic Leader Training: There are three different courses. If you are a Tiger, Wolf, Bear, or Webelos leader sign up for the Den Leader training during the first two sessions. If you are a Cubmaster sign up for the Cubmaster training during the sessions 2 and 3. If you are a committee member sign up for the Pack Committee Challenge during sessions 5 and 6. Scoutmaster Basic Training will run sessions 1 – 4. The class will get lunch as a group sometime during this time. Varsity Leader Basic Training will run sessions 4 – 6. The following are some suggested classes if you are a new Cub Scout leader and this is your first time at U of S: You can sign up for five classes plus lunch.

About Youth Leadership Training: NYLT and NAYLE Find out about leadership training opportunities for your scouts at NYLT and NAYLE. Adults in the Order of the Arrow: This class will train adults within the Lodge and also training adults on how to better serve the youth. This session is written for an adult adviser audience. It will also give you a better understanding on what the Order of the Arrow does. Advanced Games With a Purpose This class will cover the four essentials of inter-personal relationships which leaders must be aware of, and leverage, to build strong teams. It will consist primarily of some fun exercises and group discussion. Advancement and Scouts with Disabilities or Special Needs Learn National's policies on advancing a Scout who may need changes to the standard advancement requirements. Get your questions answered about where and when to get assistance for your unit and leaders for meeting such a challenge. You cannot do it alone!! Advancement Like a Ninja (New Class)

This class covers planning, organizing and presentation. Bear Adventures Great ideas for meeting the requirements for the Bear Adventures in your den. Boy Run Troop Learn what a boy run troop should look like and how to move your troop toward a boy run troop. Boy Scout “Duty to God” Requirements and Religious Emblems Clarify the Boy Scout requirements regarding their "Duty to God" in all ranks and begin gathering ideas and resources to help your Scouts work through them. Learn about the Religious Emblem program in which Boy Scouts and Scouters may participate.

Boy Scout / Venture STEM: Nova/Supernova Awards Program The BSA STEM initiative is designed to bring a Scouting focus to skills that are relevant and needed in our competitive world. It provides opportunities for youth to develop enhanced interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and recognize youth STEM achievement. Similar to the Cub Scout STEM Program; modules build on STEM Merit Badges and explore basic principles of STEM. Supernova awards are set to challenge the scout. Come learn the basics of these awards! Boy Scout Summer Camps Preview Meet the staffers who recently returned from the premier summer camps in our council, providing a preview of what each camp has to offer to your unit. Boy Scouts in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Learn about the boy scouting program in the LDS church. This class will help you understand how this is different from community-based troop. Butte Creek Wrangler (New Class)

Learn about the Butte Creek Wrangler Program and the Horse programs available in our council. Camping Adventures for Cub Scouts Feeling a bit overwhelmed about planning a campout with your pack? This introductory course on planning/camping will help your campout be enjoyable and successful. Camping with Boy Scouts The need for regular varied camping trips and the requirements for Scout planning and evaluation of the event is the topic. Equipment, clothing, tour plans, food, transportation, health requirements, and places to go will be discussed. Charter Organization Representative Training Learn how to communicate with and train your charter organization about Scouting, including training your charter organization representative. Climbing/COPE Climbing is not a sport that requires tremendous muscular strength; it demands mental toughness and the willingness to practice hard to master a set of skills. The adventure of climbing and COPE can also provide a new way to enjoy the outdoors. Come learn more about the different activities your unit can participate in.

Counseling Merit Badges/Merit Badge Counselor Training Every merit badge counselor, however skilled in the topic, needs some training. There IS a right way to counsel and interact with Scouts, leaders, parents. Take this course to be trained --- and to learn what you need in order to train the adults counseling in your unit. [Additional requirement to being fully trained is, of course, Youth Protection] Cub Crafts Easy, fun and low cost craft ideas to take back to you den and pack. This is a fee class. Cub Scout Basic Training: Cubmaster This course is the basic training required for Cubmaster. What are the tools at your disposal? How to take the vision of Scouting and put it into action? This course is two hours long. Cub Scout Basic Training: Den Leader This course is for Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos Den Leaders. This course is the required training for any den leader position. This course covers WHY songs are so important for a successful program, and HOW anybody can lead songs, NO talent required. And of course we will provide some fun songs to take away. Cub Scouts STEM: Nova/Supernova Awards Program In a time where our country is falling behind in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, this program is designed to excite and expand a sense of wonder in our Scouts. Working with an adult counselor or mentor, the various modules allow them to explore the basic principles of STEM and discover how fun and fascinating STEM can be. The Supernova awards are offered for those who enjoy a super challenge. Come learn the basics of these awards! Cub Scouting in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Get ideas on how to get your Scouts to complete their rank with the staggered start times. This class will help you understand how this is different from community-based packs.

Den Discipline Character does matter! Positive behavior is essential for creating a den environment where each boy can benefit fully from the Cub Scouting program. Come learn what to do without losing your mind or temper! Derbies Galore: Space, Rain gutter, and Pinewood Derbies Learn the secrets of staging a rain gutter regatta, space derby and pinewood derby. Learn how to maximize fun and participation while promoting Scouting values. Get ideas to keep within the tightest of budgets and preserve your sanity! Dutch Oven Cooking - Advanced You’ve mastered chili and cornbread. Your peach cobbler is cooked, not burned. If you’re ready for more complex recipes, this is the class for you. This is a fee class. Dutch Oven Cooking - Basics Learn the basics required to cook with a Dutch oven. Get recipes, resources and even sample some cooking. This is a fee class. Eagle Scout Courts of Honor Learn and share ideas for making this highlight of a Scout’s career a truly special occasion. This class will identify helps and resources available for planning Eagle Scout courts of honor. Eagle Mentor / Service Project Coach The Eagle Scout Mentor and Service Project Coach presentation is targeted for unit leaders (SM, ASM, Varsity Coach, Venturing Crew Advisor) and any unit committee member wishing to work with Scouts through the trail to Eagle and provide project support. District Advancement volunteers are also encouraged to attend. The Eagle Mentor and Project Coach serve two distinct separate roles. A lot to cover in this time frame; this presentation will explain the differences and qualifications needed to serve in these capacities and how they help your Scouts succeed. Eagle Service Projects What makes a good service project for Eagle rank? Learn how to guide scouts in selecting, planning and carrying out a good project – including the paperwork and Council procedures. Edible Crafts Learn how to create fun and exciting programs with Cub Scouts in your kitchen. This is a fee class. Effective Cub Scout Unit Advancement How to utilize this fun five-year progression of learning to keep boys “advancing” in Scouting. Learn the basics of the Cub Scout advancement program, from Tiger Cubs to Arrow of Light, including an upcoming transitions to an exciting new program based on adventures. Effective Methods of Recruitment for Cub Scouts (New Class) Learn new ways to recruit cub scouts and their parents.

Great Skits and Wacky Run-ons Take advantage of each Scout’s talent and identify resources to liven up any program or other Scouting occasion using showmanship, skits, stunts, songs and stories. Learn how simple props and costumes enhance performances. Ham Radio and Scouting – Hands on with STEM Ham (Amateur) Radio enables communication of voice, data, and video within the local community and around the world. Learn about ham radio, what resources are available, how scouts and scouters at all levels can get involved, and the opportunities that ham radio provides in scouting and the community. Hammock Camping

"Hammock camping is growing in popularity. This class provides an introduction to why you might consider hammocks and discusses equipment, practices, tips, and other resources." High Adventure Opportunities Includes highlights and information on each of the four National BSA High Adventure and each of the high adventure activities offered by each of our summer camps, as well as other activities outside of summer camp, including COPE and canoeing. How LDS Leaders Can Get Involved with the Order of the Arrow (New class) Learn about the Order of the Arrow and how LDS leaders can get involved with it. How Parents Can Help Their Boy Scout with Advancement "It is not just patches..." is important for parents to understand. The aims and purposes of the Boy Scout advancement program lend themselves to many do's and don'ts for parents that are very different than the Cub Scout program. Learn how to help your troop's parent’s support their Scouts up the "trail" without going out of bounds. How the Order of the Arrow Can Help You? LDS Scouting for Non-LDS Leaders Come learn about boy scouting in the LDS church. This is a great class for those who are involved at the district level and want to understand the boy scouting program in the LDS church Let the Games Begin! Learn about and play some themed games! Includes gathering games, games that pair well with den meeting achievements and quiet games that the boys can play while they're waiting on field trips. Map and Compass Essentials - Basic Learn some great tricks and techniques for teaching map and compass skills to your Scouts. Coupled with the mentoring of a good Assistant Scoutmaster for the Order of the Arrow, and the team can be of great assistants for your Troop program. In this class we will discuss the role of the Troop OA Rep and ASM OA. We will identify how they can be a great addition to Troop program, and give tools for success. Outdoor Cooking for Cubs Hands-on cooking for fun anywhere with Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts. Get recipes plus various indoor and outdoor cooking tips. Pack Meeting Spectacular Raise the roof and your pack spirit with cheers, skits, songs and run-ons. Come learn how to put pizzazz into your pack program! Also includes ideas on how to effectively bring the core value of the month into the pack meeting. Paddling: Water Adventures Explore all the possibilities of water activities. Discussion will include preparing Scouts and leaders for an outing, transporting the gear, places to go, typical daily distance, and other helpful tips and resources. ScoutCommunity.com / Merit Badge Counselor Management This is the official Merit Badge Counselor system for the Cascade Pacific Council. UNITS, learn how to (1) help your counselors get properly registered and approved for each badge, (2) search the district or your unit for a counselor for a specific badge, (3) run different unit reports. DISTRICTS, learn in addition (1) processing and approving counselors, (2) attendance tracking for trainings and meetings, (3) fast ScoutNET lookups for verification of registrations and (4) easy Internet Advancement processor searches and Unit ID #s. Scouting Safely: Guide to Safe Scouting plus Tour Plans, Health Forms, and More Learn how the Guide to Safe Scouting can help you identify acceptable activities for your unit. Scouting with Food Allergies

This course will provide information on how to build a program that does not exclude people with food allergies. We will provide insight on identifying those who have food allergies, intolerances, and diseases that limit food choices and give suggestions on how to make your program inclusive, fun, and safe for everyone. Scoutmaster Basic Training: Indoor This is the indoor portion of the training that is required for a scoutmaster to be fully trained. This course is 4 sessions will long and will break for lunch. You do not need to sign up for a lunch. Scouts Own Services A scout is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties and respects the beliefs of others. Take away an understanding of the requirements and time lines that are critical to achieve these ranks. Trail to First Class First Class rank is the goal for every Scout his first year. Review the requirements in detail, along with finding valuable insight into the bumps and obstacles that might be faced along the way. The basic Scouting skills learned in getting to First Class are essential for a Scout's climb to Eagle! Troop/Units Boards of Review Every rank in Boy Scouting requires a Board of Review for the Scout to progress. Come learn the who, what, when, where, and why of boards of review and how they evolve as the Scout moves up the ranks. Unit Finances 101 Learn national recommendations and local best practices for setting up a unit account, and maintaining good financial records.
