about the exhibition Danforth Art Museum\School presents the Danforth Art Annual: 2016 Juried Exhibition (formerly Off the Wall and Community of Artists), a highly anticipated exhibition featuring some of the top artistic talent in New England. Each year Danforth Art’s Annual Juried Exhibition demonstrates the organization’s dedication to provide “a special home for artists” by showing best examples of contemporary work by artists in all stages of their careers, some who are returning to and some who are new to the exhibition. This celebrated exhibition provides exposure for artists in all media for curatorial consideration for future exhibitions at Danforth Art and beyond.
about the juror Danforth Art Curator Jessica Roscio will serve as Juror for the Danforth Art Annual. Roscio has curated several celebrated exhibitions at Danforth Art including this year’s The Memory Palace: Domesticity, Objects, and the Interior and Beautiful Decay, as well as exhibitions of contemporary photographers and the exhibition Barbara Swan: Reflected Self. Prior to joining Danforth Art, she held positions at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Roscio received her Ph.D. in American Studies, with a focus on the History of Photography, from Boston University.

JUROR’S STATEMENT It has been a pleasure to serve as the juror for the 2016 Danforth Art Annual, and a privilege to exhibit these 143 works. This year’s exhibition includes both new and returning artists, a wide and diverse range of media, and an abundance of thematic conversations. The selection process was exceedingly difficult, and I want to thank all of the artists who submitted for sharing their work. Art historical traditions are often expressed in contemporary work, and the works on view include both literal references, and more conceptual approaches. The hand of the artist is apparent throughout the exhibition through deft manipulation of materials. Paint, ink, fabric, paper, wire, film, and more, are all transformed into innovative, and personal works. The figure is referenced numerous ways—gazing at us, or being gazed upon— a nod to an increasingly voyeuristic culture. RELATED PROGRAMMING AND EVENTS Unless otherwise noted, all events are included in the cost of museum admission. Museum admission is $11 adults, $9 seniors, $8 students, Danforth Art members, residents of Framingham, and children under age 17 are free.

A juried exhibition seeks to find a common thread to unite disparate media, subjects, approaches, and philosophies. Each of these works is prescient and contemporary. There is nostalgia and levity, urgency and anxiety, and references to objects, spaces, and places that will lead to moments of introspection. There is considerable talent in this exhibition, and it is my hope that viewers will enjoy the amazing breadth of work being created in this region.

Artist Performances \ Sundays at 1 pm June 19, July 24, and August 21 Join exhibiting artist Helga Felleisen for a performance of Counting Flatbread. Inspired by a seven-year-old Syrian refugee who inventories bread at a bakery to support his family, Felleisen writes numbers in Arabic, counting with the young boy.

#GoForthDanforth An Important Announcement from the Danforth Art Museum\School
Established as a grass roots organization in 1975 by a committed group of community activists, business owners, educators, and artists, Danforth Art provides exhibitions and education programs that fulfill its mission to engage, inspire and transform the lives of children and adults.
In May 2016, the Town of Framingham informed us that, due to building deficiencies, we must vacate the Danforth Building, our home since 1975, by the fall of 2016. We are seeking to secure temporary exhibition space and studio art classrooms, intending to minimize any interruptions to exhibitions, programs and classes.
Forty years after its founding, Danforth Art serves a broad and diverse community with exhibitions of American art from the 19th century to the present day, over 400 quality studio art classes annually, family and public programs, a thriving membership, events for artists and art-lovers alike. The immediacy of this move presents the organization with great financial and logistical challenges.
HOW YOU CAN HELP NOW Donate NOW. We expect a spike in operating costs of more than half a million dollars to prepare us for this immediate move and to secure suitable temporary spaces.
