2011 Junior National Hereford Expo Exhibitor FAQs PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION COMPLETELY As you start packing the trailers and mapping your trip to Kansas City this e‐mail will come in handy and is intended to answer any questions that should arise. We are busy preparing for 1,620 entries and more than 640 exhibitors and their families from 39 states. Please double check the state list to make sure your cattle are entered correctly. Please visit the Web site today and check back often for updated information that will go online as we get closer to show time. Missouri River Update The Missouri River has been a buzzword in the National news and has generated cause for concern among all of us involved with the planning for the 2011 JNHE. However, after much research and a bit of a break from Mother Nature the past few days, we feel confident that the river is going to remain at a level that will not disrupt the success of the show. So the good news is, keep packing those trailers we ARE looking forward to hosting you in Kansas City. I encourage all of you to check out the following sources for up to date information on the Missouri River flooding to help you plan your trip. Exhibitors who are travelling from the North and plan to travel on Interstate 29 through Iowa and Missouri, will need to plan an alternate route as several areas along I‐29 are closed due to flood waters. We plan to keep exhibitors updated on the current river and flooding conditions and will do so via JrHereford.org, direct e‐mails to exhibitors and the NJHA Facebook page. The last large flood in Kansas City was in 1993 with a flood stage of 48.87 feet, reports still show that the levels will be well below the 1993 stage. Water does not go over the levees until 48 feet and the water level is currently at 31 feet in downtown Kansas City. It is expected to crest at 32 feet and drop back down to 29 feet this weekend. For up‐to‐date Missouri River levels at Kansas City, visit the Army Corp of Engineers website. Notice from the Missouri and Iowa Department of Transportation: The road closures are changing daily. A section of Interstate 29 North of Council Bluffs and Omaha is closed to Missouri Valley and several closures are occurring North of St. Joseph, Mo., to Rockport, Mo., Hamburg, Iowa, and Nebraska City. ARRIVAL AND TIE OUTS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Cattle WILL NOT be allowed on the grounds until Saturday, July 9th and cattle WILL NOT be allowed in the barns at the American Royal Complex until Sunday morning, July 10th. Exhibitors may set up stalls Saturday, July 9, however cattle must remain in tie outs. STALLING POLICY FOR 2011 JNHE: You will be stalled by state in the barn and advisors are in‐charge of stalling assignments within each state. This year we ask that exhibitors do not set up stalls prior to your state advisor assigning the stall space. The state advisors will have final say in stalling for each state, so we ask that everyone cooperate with this new stalling process in order to get the week off to a good start. Please be considerate of fellow state members when making individual stalls. Stall charts will be posted in the barn, at the show office and at the entry gate. If you have any questions about your stalling please ask your state advisor or the show staff BEFORE you make your bed.
IT WILL BE HOT in Kansas City so please plan accordingly. Water will be available in the tie‐outs, however there will be NO POWER and NO SHADE, so please plan your arrival on Saturday and tie out set up accordingly. Bedding in the tie‐outs will be the same shredded wood/bark as the barns. Tie‐outs are not pre assigned and will be available on a first‐come, first‐served basis. Upon arrival at the American Royal Complex please follow the signs to the tie out area and you will be directed to the unloading area. Governor’s Hall and the Lower Exhibition Hall where cattle will be stall are air conditioned. The showring will also be air conditioned, therefore we would strongly recommend no Porta Cools in the stalling area as we feel the barns will stay more comfortable and less humid without the coolers. IMPORTANT: Cattle will not be allowed on the grounds without health papers! All health papers will be checked when you arrive at tie outs. Please have your health papers in hand as they will be checked and cattle will be checked on the trailer. A vet will also be on call throughout the week as needed. Emergency phone numbers will be posted at the show office located in Central Hall.
SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS
Thanks to our title sponsor, Tuesday, July 12th will be VitaFerm Sure Champ T‐Shirt day. All exhibitors will be given a t‐shirt at check in and we ask that everyone supports VitaFerm and wears their t‐shirt on Tuesday. The state advisor meeting will be Sunday, July 10th, at 2 p.m. in the Wagstaff Theater. ALL junior members will walk in with their state flag during opening ceremonies. We ask that all states start lining up for the parade of states after their group photos on Monday evening. Group photos will start at 4 p.m., opening ceremonies will be at 5 p.m. with a barbecue and kick off party in Hale Arena followed by the junior dance in Upper Exhibition Hall. If a member of your state is planning to participate in the Hereford Idol competition please sign up with a junior board member in the show office by 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 10th. State group pictures will begin at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 11th, in Hale Arena. The state delegate meeting and dinner will be Sunday, July 10th, at 7:30 p.m., upstairs in the Governor’s Room. ALL state delegates must attend this meeting, as candidates will give a brief introduction followed by round‐table questions. A dinner will be provided to all delegates. If you have not submitted state delegates please fax or phone the AHA with your states delegates ASAP! The NJHA membership meeting will be Tuesday, July 12th at 7 p.m., in the Governor’s Room. CATTLE CHECK IN: PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK TATTOOS Breeding cattle will be processed in Hale Arena starting at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 10th. Steers will only be processed on Sunday at 3 p.m. Steers will be ultrasound and weighed at processing. Cattle will be processed by state, beginning with NJHA board, national junior candidates and remaining states will follow as you are called. Cattle arrival and check in deadline is Sunday, July 10th by 5 p.m. The check‐in procedure will be the same as in the past. Exhibitor packets will be available at people registration in Upper Exhibition Hall. Exhibitors will need to bring their CHECK‐IN SHEETS (located in the exhibitor packet) and their steer certificates and original registration papers to the cattle processing area. MANDATORY EID EAR TAGS: Junior exhibitors participating at the 2011 JNHE must adhere to the EID mandatory tagging policy. If you are unable to tag animals prior to arrival in Kansas City, tags may be purchased for $5 per tag at the chute and an Allflex Representation or AHA Field man will tag your animals. We strongly encourage all animals to have tags in ears upon arrival in Kansas City. Please call the office on Tuesday if you need to order tags and have them shipped. They are available for $22.50 for a pack of ten. Check tattoos on all of your entries to make sure they match the registration papers exactly. If they do not match, you will not be able to show – NO SECOND CHANCES. If there is a discrepancy, you need to have your registration papers corrected so that they match the tattoos exactly – this must be handled prior to your arrival at JNHE. Wrong or illegible tattoo – NO SHOW! If you cannot read the tattoo, it is illegible! OTHER HELPFUL HINTS BANQUET TICKETS AND EXTRA SHOW SHIRTS: If you have not purchased your meal tickets, banquet tickets and/or show shirts it is not too late to do so. Please call AHA to place your orders immediately. We do accept credit card payments. Please take care of this ASAP. SHOWMANSHIP UPDATE: All showmanship contestants had to be pre‐entered by June 1st. Classes have been pre‐assigned and the showmanship show order will be available when you arrive in Kansas City. Ring #1 will start with seniors followed by intermediates and then senior finals and Ring #2 will start with juniors, followed by pee wees. NO alcoholic containers will be allowed at the American Royal Complex at any time. Remember this is a junior activity with mostly underage youth in attendance. Please adhere to this policy.
In case you need feed, hay, straw, wood chips or supplies there is a feed store at the American Royal Complex.
No show boxes or grooming chutes will be allowed behind show cattle. All fans must be hung securely above the tie area or on the stall. No butt fans will be allowed to operate from the center aisle or in the side aisle alley.
Breeding cattle will not be released until the championship drive is completed on Saturday, July 16th. Steers will be allowed to leave after show the show on Thursday.
If you owe money for entries, shirts, meals and activities you must pay before you will be allowed to pick up any tickets, shirts or process cattle! This must be handled before you arrive in Kansas City.
The State Advisor’s meeting is at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 10th and state advisors will be given a 3‐ring notebook with all of the contest sign‐up forms to be filled out and turned into the show office by 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. We appreciate the advisors assisting us with the contest sign up and it is our hope that this will stream line the sign up process and make it easier by having each state’s contest entries in one place.
People registration: will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 10th. People registration will be located in the Upper Exhibition Hall. You will be able to pick up exhibitor packets, banquet tickets, show shirts and hospitality bags at that time. People registration will also continue on Monday, July 11th from 9 a.m. until noon.
All exhibitors must wear the official Junior National Expo show shirts in the showring. These shirts will be available during people registration and the color this year is YELLOW. Each exhibitor who filled out the shirt order form and returned it to AHA will be given one free show shirt compliments of the Kansas Juniors plus the additional shirts they ordered; additional shirts will be available for purchase at people registration, those shirts are $12 per shirt.
The Hereford Photo Shop is back at this year’s show. The office will be located directly south of Hale Arena. Come by to purchase the memories that you made while attending this year’s JNHE. Take advantage of the show special by ordering your prints the same day of the show. Picture orders will be processed each evening throughout the week. Live Auctions will be broadcasting the show online and on TV screens in the barn. Please let all your family that is not able to be in Kansas City know that the show will be broadcast on the AHA Web site. Become a Fan of the National Junior Hereford Association on Facebook and keep up with all the happenings of the Junior National Hereford Expo.
Most importantly, if you have any questions prior to your arrival please call AHA before hand. Or, while you’re at the show, please feel free to stop and ask an NJHA board member, AHA staff member or any state host committee member for their assistance. We realize this is your family’s summer vacation and we understand the strong commitment that it takes as parents to make it possible for your child to participate in this activity. Remember!
