As we reflect on the past year of service to the Central Indiana community, we would like to thank you for your commitment to WFYI Public Media. Your contributions not only make the award-winning television and radio programming possible, they also strengthen our community by allowing WFYI to create the community engagement and encourage important dialogue in a way that only public service media can. Thanks to the generosity of individual members, volunteers, corporate sponsors and community partners, WFYI has been able to sustain its high level of service and has continued to amplify the voices of the Central Indiana community. Here is just a sample of what we achieved together in 2011: WFYI continued to produce quality local television programming, earning five regional Emmy Awards, one Spectrum Award from the Indiana Broadcasters Association and 11 awards from the Indianapolis chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

On the radio, Hoosiers were kept informed by a news team that earned four awards from the Indianapolis chapter of the SPJ and one Spectrum Award from the IBA. WFYI Public Radio was also voted the best radio station in Central Indiana by the readers of NUVO. Your support also reaches beyond the broadcasts and directly into the lives of residents across the state. Among its many community engagement efforts throughout the year, WFYI encouraged conversations about the state of education in Indiana and joined the American Graduate initiative to improve high school graduation rates. And, Indiana Reading and Information Services continued to serve as an around-the-clock communications link for Hoosiers who are print impaired. Thank you for making the commitment to support WFYI Public Media and our efforts to amplify the voices of the Central Indiana community. We truly could not do the work we do without you.

WFYI Community Engagement Public media is unique in its public service mission and WFYI’s focus on community engagement and education sets it apart from other broadcasters. WFYI’s efforts extend radio and television programming through community conversations, workshops, forums, training opportunities and tools for educators and students. Community engagement offers many opportunities for dialogue in the Central Indiana community. Throughout the year, thousands of residents participated in conversations about education, livability and civil society in Indiana. WFYI, a cofounder of the IndyTalks initiative, encourages civic dialogue about Indiana’s future through events and discussions. Through community engagement, WFYI also laid the groundwork for constructive conversations about education in Indiana through The American Graduate initiative, a first of its kind partnership with local public media stations, schools and community organizations to address the high school drop out crisis. Indianapolis is one of 20 cities involved with the initiative funded by grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Bill

and Melinda Gates Foundation and America’s Promise Alliance. As the initiative progresses, WFYI will build partnerships with schools, community organizations, parents and others to host teacher town halls, produce television and radio broadcasts, and provide resources to schools and teachers, all with the aim of raising awareness and encouraging action. The Spirited Chase also returned to WFYI in 2011 with the theme of Body of Change. The partnership with the Spirit and Place Festival was another huge success with 200 participants exploring five mystery destinations in our community that provoked some curiosity and helped participants think about their bodies in new ways. WFYI provides Indiana educators with online professional development through PBS TeacherLine. The convenient online courses are one way teachers can maintain their certification and improve student outcomes. PBS Learning Media offers educators tens of thousands of free digital assets to enhance the classroom experience.

WFYI Public Television WFYI broadcasts quality entertainment, public affairs and educational television exclusively on three digital channels – WFYI 1 (HD 20.1), WFYI 2 (DT 20.2) and WFYI 3 (DT 20.3).

2011 Local Documentaries

A dozen new local documentaries hit the airwaves in 2011, including the highly anticipated Indy in the ’60s. This follow-up to the popular Indy in the ’50s, with host Mike Ahern, took viewers on a journey down memory lane via interviews, archival photos and video from some of the city’s most memorable moments of the decade.

• Five Mayors: An Evening of Insight and Vision

More Than a Game chronicled the transformation of an Indianapolis Eastside neighborhood through the Super Bowl Legacy Project. Other projects took viewers behind the scenes at The International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and the restoration of the Old Centrum. These programs joined an outstanding lineup of ongoing local series like Indiana Expeditions with Rick Crosslin, Indiana Lawmakers, Indiana Week in Review, Across Indiana and Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick.

• Journey of the Beams

WFYI Productions garnered 17 Regional Emmy Award nominations in 2011. Projects done by, or in partnership with, WFYI collected five Regional Emmy Awards, one Spectrum Award from the Indiana Broadcasters Association and 11 awards from the Indianapolis chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

WFYI Public Radio WFYI Public Radio provided quality local and national public affairs, arts and news programs in 2011, while continuing its commitment to provide state and local news. That commitment to excellence has not gone unnoticed. The station was voted the “Best of Indy” by the readers of NUVO in the newspaper’s annual Best of Indy special edition. Programming on 90.1 WFYI also earned four Society of Professional Journalists awards in 2011. The awardwinning news team kept Hoosiers informed about happenings at the Statehouse, local elections, as well as issues surrounding health, education, the arts and more. WFYI Public Radio broadcasts two distinct services on three channels. WFYI Interactive Media WFYI’s online services provide an interactive experience to complement many local and national broadcasts on television and radio. In 2011, WFYI’s website had 566,322 visits. Nearly 272,000 of those visits were people coming to the website for the first time. On the site, visitors can search schedules for each of WFYI’s television and radio services, listen to archived radio productions and watch video. The website also delivers information about WFYI’s special events, upcoming volunteer opportunities and professional development courses for Hoosier educators at PBS TeacherLine. Viewers and listeners have also been encouraged to access wfyi.org for additional resources related to local productions, like bonus video and the teacher toolkit available for Indiana Expeditions with Rick Crosslin.

IRIS Indiana Reading and Information Services (IRIS) serves the Central Indiana community and beyond as an aroundthe-clock communications link for Hoosiers who are print impaired. IRIS staff and volunteers provide a service for those who cannot read normal print – due to blindness, low vision, physical impairments, illness, learning disorders or illiteracy – allowing them to stay connected with their communities through local news and information, or to relax with a good book. Throughout the year, IRIS served individuals through radio broadcasts and the Web. Every day, IRIS provides

The website has a continuously growing library of audio and video podcasts. A number of new RSS Podcasts were made available through wfyi.org in 2011, including Indiana – By Degrees, State Impact Indiana and Leadership Lessons Learned. Many NPR and PBS RSS offerings are also available. WFYI Public Radio provides a live Web stream allowing Central Indiana residents to stay connected to their community from anywhere in the world that access to the Internet is available. The station also simulcasts its HD offerings through the Web, making them available to those without an HD radio. Throughout the year, Indiana Week in Review viewers and listeners have been notified about weekly topics and invited to participate in weekly online viewer polls, through a partnership with Ice Miller, LLP. WFYI is also connecting with thousands of viewers and listeners through its growing presence on social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook, In YouTube and Flickr. 2011, nearly 272,000 unique visitors clicked to wfyi.org.

Community Events For the 14th year, WFYI hosted the Speaking of Women’s Health conference, presented by St. Vincent Women’s Services, at the Indiana Convention Center in September. More than 800 attended the daylong event that featured engaging presentations about physical, mental and financial health. Several Central Indiana health-related organizations also hosted informative interactive booths during the event. ®

WFYI’s mission to be a center of discovery was on display during numerous community events throughout the year. In February, the Ice Miller Indy Wine Fest, hosted by WFYI, attracted more than 1,000 wine enthusiasts and novices alike to the Indiana Roof Ballroom. Wine experts shared their knowledge of fine wines from across the state and around the world during this elegant evening.

WFYI’s Let’s Meet PBS KIDS in the Park, presented by Marsh, returned in June for its 18th year. Indiana Lawmakers began its 30th year of examining the issues and agendas before the state legislature. Journalist Jon Schwantes celebrated his 15th year as the program’s host.

The 12th Annual Ice Miller Indy Wine Fest attracted wine enthusiasts and novices to the Indiana Roof Ballroom. During this elegant evening, wine experts shared their knowledge of fine wines from across the state and around the world.

WFYI Public Radio kicked off the second year of the IndyTalks initiative, exploring Indy as a Super City, with the public affairs program No Limits. IndyTalks is a citywide effort to promote respectful and creative civic dialogue. WFYI was one of a dozen community organizations that partnered to create the initiative.

Indiana – By Degrees, a 12-part news series from WFYI Public Radio, provided an in-depth look at the challenges, barriers and solutions facing Indiana’s 21st century students as they pursue a degree that leads to a career.

March Veteran journalist Mike Ahern hosted Indy in the ’60s and took viewers on a trip down memory lane, reliving the highs and lows of the decade through archival photographs, video and interviews with the people who lived it – including Jane Pauley, George McGinnis, Richard Lugar and a teen cook at the Riviera Club, who would later become Governor, Mitch Daniels. WFYI recorded Five Mayors: An Evening of Insight and Vision, a panel discussion at the University of Indianapolis, featuring current Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and his four immediate predecessors – Bart Peterson, Stephen Goldsmith, William H. Hudnut III and Sen. Richard G. Lugar. The unprecedented conversation aired the following month on WFYI Public Television and WFYI Public Radio. WFYI signed an agreement to be the administrative agent for the Economic Club of Indiana Speaker Series. The Economic Club serves as a forum for discussion of provocative public policy issues, providing Central Indiana residents opportunities to hear many of the country’s top molders of public opinion on political, economic and social matters. The Year in Brief May

April WFYI hosted its 40th Anniversary Celebration and invited guests to explore its headquarters, enjoy food samplings from local restaurants and listen to local entertainment. NPR’s Morning Edition host, and Carmel native, Steve Inskeep was the special guest. The locally-produced First In, Last Out: A History of Fighting Fire in Indianapolis was broadcast on WFYI 1, telling the story of the Indianapolis Fire Department – its past, its present and its future.

The Indiana Historical Society and Christian Theological Seminary partnered with WFYI for screening and discussion opportunities offered in conjunction with the broadcast of American Experience’s Freedom Riders. The broadcast marked the 50th anniversary of the original Freedom Rides, in which more than 400 black and white activists protested against Jim Crow laws by traveling together on buses and trains through the Deep South. WFYI announced that it is part of the American Graduate initiative, a first-of-its-kind partnership with local public media stations, schools and organizations to lower the high school dropout rate. Indianapolis is one of 20 hub cities participating in the initiative which is supported by more than $4 million in grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and America’s Promise Alliance.

June Let’s Meet PBS KIDS in the Park returned for the 18th year. The daylong, free, family celebration, presented by Marsh, drew thousands of families to Military Park in White River State Park. More than a Game: The Indy Super Bowl Legacy began its examination of how Indianapolis’ opportunity to host the NFL’s Super Bowl is being used as a catalyst to transform a proud and historic neighborhood on the city’s near eastside through the Super Bowl Legacy Project. The Game Changers told the story of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation’s unique initiative to identify and select future teachers from the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, and fund their training at universities that have created new teacher preparation programs.

The Year in Brief July WFYI Public Radio was voted the “Best Radio Station” in Indianapolis by the readers of NUVO magazine. Self Sacrifice: A Son, A Soldier, A Suicide aired on WFYI 1, relating the Keesling family’s experiences in helping others to understand the severity of the problem of suicide in the military, after their son, Chancellor, took his own life while serving in Iraq.

October Journey of the Beams aired on WFYI 1, relating the story of Indianapolis Firefighter Greg Hess and his determination to bring two beams from the World Trade Center to Indianapolis to create a memorial and public art sculpture. WFYI broadcasted The Indianapolis: The 2010 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, which took viewers behindthe-scenes as it followed three talented violinists throughout the 17-day competition.

WFYI partnered with the Spirit and Place Festival, hosting the 3rd Annual Spirited Chase, a daylong tour of five destinations around Indianapolis. The theme, Bodies of Change, challenged participants to think about their bodies in new ways, sample new things and to think about the human spirit and the places in the city that help to nurture it.

WFYI honored the efforts of its community supporters and a select group of local leaders at its annual Thanks for Giving Reception at the Skyline Club. Michael Feinstein, multi-platinum selling entertainer and artistic director of The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, was the guest speaker/performer.

December Open Door: China in Indiana aired on WFYI 1, exploring ways in which the ties between Indiana and China are growing stronger – and faster – every year. The local documentary was produced in collaboration between WFYI and the Confucius Institute in Indianapolis.

Musical Threads: Experience of a People, a locallyproduced documentary featuring guitar virtuoso Tyrone Cooper and world class mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson, explored the common threads from the musical African American cultural experience that weave through jazz, spirituals, blues, pop and soul. WFYI hosted the 3rd Annual Indiana Dramatic Arts and Communications Festival and Competition (INDACS). The festival is an opportunity for young children, youth and adults to share their passion for poetry, drama and communication in a nurturing environment. 12

2011 Leadership Giving The Visionary Circle

WFYI’s Visionary Circle was established to increase annual unrestricted support to the organization. WFYI’s Indiana Reading and Information Services (IRIS) provides around-the-clock access to the written word through both local broadcast service and a statewide toll-free telephone access system. Each day more than 3,200 Hoosiers with printimpairments have access to newspapers, magazines, literary works and more through IRIS.
