Dear YMCA Donor, I’m thrilled to share some news with you - in 2009 the YMCA gave thousands of low-income children and youth access to YMCA programs. They built new skills, found a place to belong and had fun. As a YMCA donor, YOU made this possible. Thank you! But that’s not all you did. Through these experiences you also gave children positive role models; values development; and the skills they need to deal with difficult situations with confidence and self-worth. At the YMCA, we call these benefits developmental assets, and all kids need them to grow up strong and resilient. I am delighted to report that we exceeded our goal to raise $840,000 with over $910,000 raised. Please review the following report on the children and youth that gained access to a YMCA program and the impact it’s had on their lives. It is truly remarkable what we are able to accomplish together. Last year was a troublesome time economically for a lot of families and the YMCA was here for them. A YMCA Story

Jimmy Vu At only 13 years of age, Jimmy Vu, is taking responsibility into his own hands. As an only child of two working parents, going home after school to an empty house can feel lonely. Some days he’ll head straight home and finish his homework but most days, he goes to the YMCA Youth Centre to hang out with other teens his age. “I like to come here. I’ve made friends here,” says Jimmy about his daily visits when he plays pool, catches up on Facebook, watches movies and plays games. As a YMCA member as well, sometimes he’ll head upstairs and play basketball with his friends. “Jimmy has also started to volunteer,” says Paul, the Centre Supervisor. “Jimmy helps us stock shelves, get things set up for shows, and help with Youth Nights.” In the evening, when the centre closes, Jimmy heads home and starts to get dinner ready for his family. “If I wasn’t here I’d be home alone,” he says. For Jimmy the Youth Centre is a place where he can be surrounded by mentors, friends and feel safe.

“I like to come here. I’ve made friends here.”

YMCA & Developmental Assets

YMCA Health, Fitness & Recreation

YMCA Canada uses the Developmental Assets® framework from the Search Institute, in the design and evaluation of all YMCA programs in Canada.

Over 2000 children and youth received financial support to access YMCA centres in Brantford, Burlington, Hamilton and Flamborough, to participate in traditional YMCA sports and recreation programs that build self-confidence to take on new challenges and help them develop an interest in good health. Skills like these benefit them for a lifetime and can help reduce childhood obesity.

Developmental Assets are common sense, positive experiences and qualities that help influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults. Grounded in extensive research in youth development, resiliency, and prevention, Developmental Assets represent the relationships, opportunities, and personal qualities that young people need to avoid risks and to thrive. Studies of more than 2.2 million young people consistently show that the more assets young people have, the less likely they are to engage in a wide range of high-risk behaviors, and the more likely they are to thrive. Assets like having a positive relationship with a caring adult, other than a parent; or a regular commitment to exercise and physical activity. The average young person today experiences fewer than half of the 40 assets. That’s where the YMCA comes in. For more information on the 40 Developmental Assets, visit www.search-institute.org. 4

YMCA Community Outreach There are thousands of children living in lower-income neighbourhoods without easy access to a YMCA centre. The YMCA reaches out to these children by providing community-based outreach programs in their schools and other centres. In 2009, 410 children were provided with fully subsidized access to afterschool and summer programs, like the Virtual YMCA, where the children get help with their homework, reading programs, sports and recreation programs, social values education and a nutritional snack. This is just one of the ways, the YMCA is working with our community to alleviate poverty.

YMCA School-Age Child Care

YMCA Career Development & Learning

More than one hundred families received subsidized access to child care sites for their children before and after school. While their parents worked, the children had a safe place to have fun, to socialize with other children, and to get help with their homework.

More than 140 youth in our community received sponsored access to our YMCA Career Development and Learning Centres that offer a number of personal development, support programs and job counseling services.

YMCA Day Camp

YMCA International

135 families received reduced fees so their children could take part in a YMCA Summer Day Camp program where they participated in sports and recreation programs, and experienced the outdoors at Christie Conservation Area.

1100 Zambian youth were provided with an HIV-Aids education and prevention program through our international partnership with the YMCA of Zambia.

YMCA Wanakita More than 340 children and youth benefited from subsidized access to YMCA Wanakita, our year-round outdoor education centre in the Haliburton Highlands. The children and youth developed self confidence and independence, while learning to respect and understand our environment.

YMCA Pre-School

82 families received uninterrupted access to safe, licensed pre-school child care programs at a YMCA Child Care centre.
