NATIONAL CHAMPION

Playoff Capsules

Division I Championship Recaps First Round: Big First Half Propels Mountaineers BOONE, N.C. – No. 1 Appalachian State (11-1) racked up 356 yards of offense in the first half alone — 179 of them on the ground — to open up an insurmountable 31-0 lead and went on to coast to a 45-28 victory over No. 13 Coastal Carolina (9-3) in the first round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship on Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Quarterback Armanti Edwards ran for 172 yards, Kevin Richardson added 156 on the ground and the duo combined to account for all six ASU touchdowns to lead the Apps to 45 points on 560 yards of total offense, both school playoff records. For the ninth time in 12 games this season, ASU’s defense did not allow a touchdown in the first half. Appalachian limited CCU to just 115 yards before halftime en route to pitching its fifth first-half shutout of the year. Edwards’ 172 rushing yards were the most ever by an ASU quarterback and the fifth-best mark for any Mountaineer in a playoff game.

Bobcats Topple 8th-Ranked Furman BOZEMAN, MONT. — Montana State posted a 31-13 victory over Southern Conference power Furman in Bozeman, Mont. Jack Rolovich threw for 272 yards and redshirt freshman Jessie Anderson turned his own blocked punt into a touchdown in the win. The Bobcat defense dominated the game until the outcome was beyond question. Furman, one of the top rushing teams in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision, gained only 123 total yards through three quarters. The Bobcat offense capitalized on the big play. On MSU’s third play from scrimmage, Rolovich scrambled to the right and found Donell Wheaton for a 51-yard score. With just under 10 minutes left in the first half, and Furman punting from its own end zone, Anderson crashed through the Paladin punt protection unit and blocked a punt by Trent Hawk. The ball bounded out to the four yard line, where MSU’s Brian Williams picked it up and made a move toward the end zone. The ball popped loose, and Anderson, hustling, recovered for a touchdown. MSU led 17-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Williams forced a fumble and Kory Austin recovered, giving MSU possession on the Furman 25. On first down, Rolovich feathered a ball into Mike Jefferson’s hands in the back corner of the end zone for a touchdown. With the Bobcat offense and special teams turning in big plays in the second quarter, the defense was solid. Furman ran only 12 offensive plays in three possessions in the period, three coming after the team’s only secondquarter first down, which came on an MSU penalty.

Quarterfinals: ASU Downs Montana State, 38-17 BOONE, N.C. --- Kevin Richardson became Appalachian State’s all-time leading scorer and tied an ASU postseason record with four touchdowns and rushed for 131 yards to lead the topseeded Mountaineers to a 38-17 victory over Montana State at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Richardson got going early, as his scores from two and five yards gave the Mountaineers a 14-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game. However, turnovers on three-straight possessions quickly turned Appalachian’s advantage into a 14-10 ballgame midway through the second period The momentum turned back the Apps’ way just before halftime when they snuffed out a fake-punt attempt by Montana State and took over at midfield. The Mountaineers took advantage of MSU’s gamble by driving 42 yards and taking a 17-10 halftime lead on a 25-yard Julian Rauch field goal. The teams traded third quarter TDs. With the Bobcats driving, All-America safety Corey Lynch punctuated his return from a severe elbow injury suffered just 28 days ago with an interception on the first play of the fourth quarter. Minutes later, Richardson dove in from a yard out for his third score to give Appalachian a 31-17 lead. Following a fumble recovery by Daniel Orlebar at the three-yard line, Richardson found pay dirt for the fourth time .

Semifinals: Mountaineers Stop Penguins, 49-24 BOONE, N.C. – Led by 100 yards performances from running back Kevin Richardson and quarterback Armanti Edwards, No. 1 Appalachian State racked up 353 yards on the ground and posted a 49-24 victory over fourth-seeded Youngstown State on Dec. 10. With 145 and 110 rushing yards, respectively, Richardson and Edwards both topped the 100-yard mark for the third-consecutive week. The duo accounted for all four Mountaineer touchdowns in the first half – Edwards on an 18-yard pass to Hans Batichon and a six-yard run and Richardson as the Mountaineers led 28-14 at intermission. ASU scored early in the third quarter following a fumbled punt attempt. Appalachian scored twice more in the final period on a 25-yard touchdown run by true freshman Devon Moore and Edwards’ career-high third rushing touchdown of the game, an eight-yarder that stretched the lead to 49-17. YSU added a late touchdown to account for the final margin. Murrell led the defensive effort with two sacks, a forced fumble, a quarterback hurry and a pass break-up. Safety Jeremy Wiggins led the team with 10 tackles and broke up a pair of passes. Fellow safety Corey Lynch had nine stops, two pass break-ups and an pick-off.

CHAMPIONSHIP: APPALACHIAN STATE 28, MASSACHUSETTS 17 CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – Junior Kevin Richardson scored all four touchdowns to lead No. 1 Appalachian State University to its second-straight NCAA Division I Football National Championship with a 28-17 triumph over No. 3 Massachusetts on Dec. 15. The Mountaineers rushed for 285 yards, with Richardson tallying 179 yards of the load. Richardson’s 179 yards were the most given up by the Minuteman since November 9, 2002. The Elizabethtown, N.C. native also set an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division IAA) single-season record with 30 rushing touchdowns in 15 games this season. The previous record was held by Colgate’s Jamaal Branch, who scored 29 touchdowns in 16 games in 2003. Despite Richardson’s MVP performance, it was UMass runing back Steve Baylark that set the tone early. On the first series of the game, Baylark ran for 23 yards, setting up a one-yard touchdown dive by tailback Matt Lawrence that gave the Minutemen an early 7-0 lead. Baylark went on to rush for 62 yards on nine carries in the first quarter alone. After a nearly scoreless second quarter, Richardson ran in from six yards out for his second score of the night to give Appalachian a 14-7 lead with 49 seconds left in the first half. Midway through the third period, Massachusetts took advantage of Edwards’ only mistake of the game, an interception deep inside UMass territory. The Minutemen took advantage of the miscue, marching 81 yards in 11 plays and tying the game at 14 on a 17-yard pass from Liam Coen to Bard Listorti with 4:22 to play in the third quarter. Appalachian took the lead back for good on its next possession, as Richardson took it in for the third time a from four yards out, giving the defending champs a 21-14 lead with 13:22 left to play in the contest. The Minutemen charged down the field on their next possession, but the Mountaineer defense buckled down once UMass crossed midfield and the Minutemen had to settle for a 42-yard field goal, leaving the Apps with a 21-17 advantage with 8:46 left in the game. Appalachian was able to melt all but 1:51 off the clock after the UMass field goal with a 14-play, 80yard drive, capped by Richardson’s fourth TD, a two-yard dive that effectively sealed ASU’s second-straight national title. On the ensuing drive, all-America safety Corey Lynch crushed all hopes of a Minuteman comeback with his third interception in as many games since returning 28 days following a severe elbow injury. Two kneel-downs by backup quarterback Trey Elder set off a wild celebration. Edwards completed the most prolific season by a freshman quarterback in ASU history by totaling 227 total yards (146 passing, 81 rushing). Senior William Mayfield and junior Dexter Jackson each caught three passes for 44 yards. Lynch and Jeremy Wiggins led the defense with seven total tackles apiece. Wiggins finished with eight total tackes, while Lynch added a tackle for loss, interception and pass breakup. Baylark tallied 133 of UMass’ 165 yards on the ground and Coen completed 20-of-33 passes for 221 yards and a touchdowns to lead the Minutemen offensively.

The overflow crowd of 22,808, consisting of upwards of 15,000 Black and Gold-clad fans, set a Finley Stadium record and marked the 12th time in 15 games this season that the Mountaineers have played in front of a capacity crowd.
