Chip Shots John Comninaki PGA Professional, Director of Golf

Many golfers think of fall and the approach of winter as the end of the golf season, but in the golf shop the staff knows the new equipment season is just beginning. All leaders of the golf industry are launching new products this fall for markets in Florida and the Sun Belt states. Titleist is revamping the AP1 and AP2 irons for more distance and forgiveness without sacrificing the look traditional players prefer. Callaway is coming out with new Apex and Apex Tour irons and a new series of Big Bertha Alpha driver and fairways. Taylormade has launched the new M1 driver, which you couldn’t miss if you watched any of the Tour Championship on TV the last several weeks. Your golf shop at Boonsboro will have these clubs and more for our players, as we always strive to provide the very best the golf industry has to offer to the members. New lines offered this fall will be Donald Ross apparel and Columbia outerwear. Donald Ross men's apparel is for those who like a classic look with modern performance, and Columbia, is a proven performer in outdoor wear. Your golf shop will help you fill your golfer's wish list this holiday season with the best known and highest quality brands at the most competitive prices. Always a winner, personalized Titleist golf balls can be ordered with free imprinting and the order deadline is December 10th for this popular gift item. Saturday, December 5th will be the golf shop's annual Open House and Sale. Something new the year will be cyber-Monday, on November 30th. All special orders will receive an additional 10% off from our usual low prices to give you the very best value this holiday season. One day only! While golf may be slowing down, our work around the golf shop is just beginning for next year. Next year’s calendar is being planned and the Board of Directors has created the opportunity to add two more charity or corporate events to the golf calendar. If you are involved in a community service organization that wishes to conduct a golf tournament to raise money for a good cause, contact the golf shop to help you make a date on next year’s calendar.

The staff and I wish everyone the happiest of holidays. This time of year means great fall golf coupled with the anticipation of being surrounded by family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s also time to make start thinking about your New Year’s resolutions and if golf is on your list we can help! Congratulations to the team of Steve Washburn and Caskie Giles/Alex Richards who won the Men’s Summer League Round Robin. They defeated Charlie Evans and Seth Twery in the finals 1up. In the second year of the Summer League the Evans and Twery team has only lost twice. Each time to the Washburn-Giles team. Coty Hudson followed up her Women’s Club Championship victory with a 25 shot victory in the Central Virginia Women’s Golf Tournament, shooting a final round 68 (a personal best)at Ivy Hill. Congratulations also to Danielle Washburn for finishing third in the CVWGT after opening rounds of 79 and 79. Her first time breaking 80! There were two hole in ones in the past few months. First by Randy Smith from the white tees on #13 with a 9 iron and just 2 weeks later by Chuck Flournoy on the same hole from the green tees with a 7 iron. Chuck Flournoy also shot a personal best at Boonsboro with a 75. Another personal best was an 81 by Persis Tinsley during the BWGA Member Member. John Comninaki

Frost Delays The fall usually brings great golf weather but colder temperatures, which means the possibility of frost each morning. Frost creates the poten al for serious turf damage if there is any foot or cart traffic on the ice covered blades of grass. Please check with the golf shop before going onto the golf course or prac ce puDng green. The golf course maintenance crew and golf shop staff will do all it can to communicate when the golf course will open in the event of a frost delay, but delays are inevitable. We ask for your pa ence.

The holiday shopping season officially kicks off on Friday, November 27th and the Golf Shop will join the fun!! Deep discounts on Columbia, FootJoy and Donald Ross Apparel will make your shopping dollars go further this holiday season for the golfers in your family. Racquet Round Up Drew Robinson USPTA Professional, Director of Tennis

As we move into another holiday season, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you, and your families a safe and happy season. I would like to thank each of you for being a member at BCC and supporting our tennis programs.

Young Children: We have had complaints of the noise level with young children in the indoor tennis building and on the courts. Please use the downstairs conference room if you need a sanctuary.

If you are not participating in a tennis contract, walk on play is always an option. We have a 72 hour pre- booking policy for reserving courts and our fees are modest. Please help our staff by registering in the shop before playing. Junior and adult instructional programs are detailed on the following pages and will have limited space, so be sure to register! You can sign up for a clinic or a private lesson and let us help you play your best tennis and achieve your tennis goals. If you like competitive tennis, do not miss our Club Doubles Championship Saturday, November 7th. In the Tennis Shop watch for our holiday sale starting black Friday and let us help you with special orders for Christmas. Do not hesitate to contact Carrington Neel for your Christmas orders or stockings!

Have a great month and I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! See you on the courts soon.

Also, please welcome Philip Head and Jacob Sibcy to our department who have previously been with Boonsboro in the clubhouse. Reminders: Indoor Court Reservations: We will be using a waiting list system for courts again and will be enforcing a 3 hour cancellation policy on indoor courts. Call for unlimited fee for indoor play. Contracts: You are off the weeks of December 23 and December 30. Thanksgiving Thursday contracts can make up their contracts at their convenience!

Behind the Greens Steve Vessells Greens Superintendent

With greens aerification and over-seeding out of the way, November and December take us into our annual battle with the leaves. They usually start to fall around the first of November and keep us pretty busy up until Christmas. We will use all of our tools to keep the course playable while the leaves are falling. We have two large area blowers that are tractor driven and used on fairways, roughs and some tee complexes. A small army of hand held, backpack and push blowers are used to keep the greens and tees clear. Along with managing the leaves, we still are usually mowing grass on a regular basis, still changing cups and raking bunkers. Even though we don’t have any club sponsored events or tournaments scheduled, don’t think the season is over. November and December can be a great time to play golf.

We will also be doing work on some of our trees and shrubs. We are taking a more proactive approach to some of our key trees on the golf course. They are some of our most valuable assets. With the help of The Certified Arborists at Bartlett Tree Experts, we have put together a plan to not only make our trees safer, but healthier, so they can live longer and continue to be part of the beauty of Boonsboro. This work will include removing dead, diseased and broken branches 3” in diameter and larger throughout the crown to improve health and appearance and reduce risk of branch failure on certain trees. Structural support, such as cabling will be done. Fertilizer applications, to improve the health of trees and shrubs are also part of this project. This time of year can also bring frost delays. It is essential that traffic of any kind is kept off of the greens when there is frost present. Foot traffic on frosted greens can leave footprints for months that can weaken the plants and possibly kill some grass as well. Please be aware of frost and be sure to check with the pro shop before playing on those frosty mornings.
