Beauty, Health and Wellness Under One Roof Women—and men— discover they can have it all at Mirabile M.D.

A

typical week for Jeanne and Ben of Overland Park is one that’s repeated countless times throughout the metro for other married couples. Hours spent sitting in business meetings, racing to client deadlines, shuttling kids from one practice to another and maintaining a household. Suzie, a business owner, wants to feel and look her best for a demanding schedule of travel, volunteer work and board obligations.

One thing these people have in common— besides calendars crammed with responsibilities— is a challenge in carving personal time into their lives. So when Jeanne learned from a friend that Mirabile M.D. Beauty, Health and Wellness is convenient for everything from annual well woman exams, aesthetics, weight-loss and even hormone management for women—and men— among other services, she made an appointment for a free consultation. “I wanted a place where I can take care of a lot of my personal health and beauty needs and make myself a priority,” Jeanne says. “And Ben needed to find a provider who could help him with male hormone management.” James Mirabile, M.D., FACOG, founder of Mirabile M.D. Beauty, Health and Wellness—an awardwinning Super Doc and well-known Gynecologist in the region—opened his practice with convenience in mind. Integrating Gynecology,

MedCosmetic, Medi-Weightloss® and Hormone Replacement Therapy into a one-stop-shop, Dr. Mirabile notes that most harried people can now make time for health and wellness. “We live in a world where everything can be overwhelming,” he says. “I wanted to create a place to help people make very intentional and serious decisions to take care of themselves. The phrase ‘self-care’ has become a buzzword, but it describes what’s missing in our lives.” Unlike other medical spas or wellness centers that simply list a doctor as a member of their team, Mirabile M.D. actually has a board-certified physician at the practice every day—on-site Medical Director Dr. Mirabile—that develops protocols. www.kchealthandwellness.com

“There’s really a doctor in the house, Monday through Friday, at Mirabile M.D.,” Dr. Mirabile says. “There are so many non-invasive procedures that need to be done by or supervised by a physician, such as ThermiVa® vaginal rejuvenation and hormone replacement therapy.” Whether you want to improve your skin’s appearance, lose those extra pounds, take care of your well woman needs or balance your hormones, Mirabile M.D. has it bundled under one roof. “It’s more than just convenient,” Dr. Mirabile says. “There’s a trust factor when you see different members of our team for a variety of treatments and procedures.” That cohesive, complementary environment has created an element of care not found elsewhere in town.

T

he holidays are upon us. A time to give thanks and spend time with friends and family. For some it’s the end of a long anticipated wait for the holiday feast, Grandma’s Deviled eggs, Aunt Betty’s Pumpkin Pie or even the Roast Beast. For others, it’s the anticipated, dreaded weight gain that seems to be associated with the festivities. For many, the holidays can bring pain or flaring of chronic conditions that can be caused by the feast itself.

but does it e, l Pi

There’s an old saying, ‘You are what you eat.’ Foods can affect children, adults and the elderly. Multiple conditions can be aggravated by the foods we eat. Conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis and even arthritis just to name a few. ACNE Acne is one of the most common skin problems. Acne is not limited to teenagers, however, it can affect people of all ages and skin types. Diet alone is not the cause of acne, but studies have shown that diets with a high glycemic index can flare or worsen acne. High sugar/high fat diets can increase sebum production and promote inflammatory responses in the body which can flare acne. People who overindulge in sugary foods tend to have more acne breakouts when compared with people who eat a diet of fresh, non-processed foods like fruits and vegetables. Limiting or avoiding a high glycemic diet seems to promote clean, healthier skin resulting in fewer breakouts and decreasing overall inflammation in the body.

PSORIASIS Psoriasis is a complex and inflammatory process that can also benefit from diet. For instance, the number of people suffering from psoriasis is lower in regions where the diet consists mainly of fish, olive oil and nuts that help reduce inflammation. For instance, fish high in Omega-3 slows the release of inflammatory hormones and can reduce redness, scaling and itching of the skin. Gaining weight or being overweight can worsen the severity of psoriasis. Some foods that worsen psoriasis, like alcohol and sugar, are also linked to weight gain. Eating more anti-inflammatory foods and, for some, following a gluten-free diet can decrease the severity of psoriasis as well as that of heart disease commonly associated with psoriasis. ECZEMA Eczema is most common in young children but affects adults of all ages as well. Food allergies can exacerbate eczema in some kids. Babies and young children are more likely to have food triggers than older kids. Some foods are more likely to trigger the symptoms than others. The foods that cause 90% of all food allergies are milk, eggs, shellfish, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat and fish.

Welcome Back Jim Fackrell! KMC Dermatology is excited to welcome Cecil “Jim” Fackrell, PAC, back to the Leawood and Shawnee locations beginning January 2017. www.kchealthandwellness.com

A new possible culprit may be GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms) and the body’s response to them. Food allergies/sensitivities may not be the cause of the eczema, but can be something that may flare the condition and increase the overall inflammatory response. INFLAMMATORY FOODS High sugar, high fat foods and alcohol are not the only inflammatory foods. Red meat and poultry are foods that can have a high hormone content and a high inflammatory index. These foods can increase the inflammatory response in the body and may lead to the increased pain and suffering of those afflicted with arthritis or chronic pain. SETTING GOALS While diet alone cannot fix everything, eating a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet can help in an array of health issues. I’m not suggesting that we eat ‘rabbit food’ for the holidays, but do suggest informing yourself and giving thought to what you are eating, including setting goals for your non-holiday diet and just maybe having one less slice of Aunt Betty’s Pumpkin Pie.

Offers New In-Office Diagnostic Services

Saving Patients Time and Money For Pelvic Floor Disorders and Evaluation of Rectal and Colon Disorders By Lori Oswald

Darcy Shaw, M.D. Dr. Darcy Shaw is now offering evaluation and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction, fecal incontinence, constipation, and rectal prolapse. Our pelvic floor center, for women, begins with a thorough evaluation, including a history and comprehensive physical examination. Additional testing such as transanal ultrasound and manometry is offered in our clinic when indicated. Offering these diagnostic services in the clinic, rather than a hospital setting, is much more convenient, efficient and cost effective for patients.

Anorectal Manometry is utilized for both men and women and is highly specialized testing that specifically evaluates muscles and pressure in the rectum and colon which is then converted into a detailed report. This report assists Dr. Shaw in diagnosing and developing an individualized treatment plan for the patient with the best possible outcomes. Pelvic floor disorders are common for females and often the result of child bearing and other strenuous activities. The treatment approach is a multidisciplinary one which may also include specific pelvic floor physical therapy to assist with strengthening muscles. Our priority is providing expert and compassionate care for these common problems.

Christie Brock, D.O. and Dr. Adam Kramer, D.O. Advanced Surgical Associates (ASA) partners, Dr. Christie Brock and Dr. Adam Kramer, also offer Complete Breast Care Services. This includes evaluation, comprehensive family history, examination, diagnostic review and surgical intervention when indicated. ASA supports a team approach to coordinate care with other specialists as needed, including interventional radiology, pathology, oncology, and plastic surgery. Both surgeons are members of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. Breast procedures may include surgical biopsy, conservative tissue removal and mastectomy when indicated. Our highly qualified staff provides compassionate care, education and support to all patients and family members who receive any type of treatment through our office.

Chris Daggett, D.O.

Offering micro-laparoscopic gallbladder removal for patients who qualify, in addition to laparoscopic and open gallbladder, and hernia procedures.

ASA is Accepting New Patients! To learn more, visit www.asakc.com or call us at 816.246.0800

All ASA partners, Dr. Chris Daggett, Dr. Adam Kramer, Dr. Christie Brock and Dr. Darcy Shaw are Board Certified and provide common General Surgery services, such as gallbladder removal, hernia repair, hemorrhoid, pilonidal cysts, fissures, colon, and skin lesions. www.kchealthandwellness.com

ANTI-AGING MEDICINE

OPTIMIZING HORMONAL BALANCE By Scott Kempton, MD

Although there have been concerns over testosterone therapy recently, these were spurred on by questionable media coverage of poorly done research which was quickly discounted by experts in the field of HRT due to very poor study designs. There are many well-done studies showing not only the safety of appropriately prescribed and monitored therapy, but significant health benefits as well. Recommendations include doing your own research before seeing your doctor. And when seeing your physician, you may find that many have become uncomfortable with HRT and tend to avoid prescribing and appropriately monitoring the therapy. ACHIEVE AN OVERALL SENSE OF WELL-BEING Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine physicians are specifically trained to prescribe physiologic doses of HRT and to appropriately dose, monitor and adjust hormonal therapy to achieve a balance that will deliver an overall sense of well-being.

WHAT IS ANTI-AGING AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE? Anti-Aging medicine is a clinical specialty founded on the application of advanced scientific and medical technologies for the prevention, early detection, treatment and reversal of age-related dysfunction and disease. Anti-aging medicine is based on the scientific principles of evidencebased medicine. It is innovative science and research to improve health and longevity. Essentially, it is a strong focus on disease prevention using the latest scientific evidence and technology. This includes, but is not limited to, optimizing your nutrition, sleep hygiene, individualized exercise regimens, lifestyle habits, stress management, relaxation therapy and hormonal balance. Each of these categories has a significant effect on the aging process as well as the disease process. For now, let’s focus on hormonal balance. HORMONAL BALANCE To be complete, it is necessary to address all the categories to optimize hormonal balance and in

doing so the individual may lessen the need for hormonal replacement therapy (HRT). However, at some point in the aging process, the need for hormonal therapy will arise for many people and should be addressed appropriately. There are many hormones in the human body. These hormones affect our mood, energy levels, metabolism and our quality of life. There is a “hormonal symphony” going on in each of us and it must be carefully conducted to achieve balance. Without this balance, the individual will not feel or be healthy. Of the many hormones involved, testosterone is one of the most important in both men and women. Low testosterone levels will cause serious signs of declining health in men and women to include depression, anxiety, fatigue, loss of muscle mass, increased body fat, decreased bone density, mood changes and hair loss. In men, it will also cause erectile dysfunction, low libido, chronic pain intolerance as well as many other symptoms. Low testosterone also increases the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and dementia.

“No disease that can be treated by diet should be treated with any other means.” – Maimonides www.kchealthandwellness.com

If you have a concern and feel you may be a candidate for HRT, see your doctor. And if you would like a consultation for evaluation and treatment, come see us. You can also visit us at myMosaicJourney.com/appointments or call 816.569.1480. Scott Kempton, MD Dr. Kempton is a physician with over 20 years of experience. He is a passionate advocate of both Paleo and Primal lifestyles, utilizing food as medicine in each patient experience. His dedication to providing evidence-based medicine to each client has resulted in extensive training in Functional Medicine and the completion of his board certification in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Kempton’s incorporation of genetic counseling, personalized nutrition and exercise therapy to improve health, reverse disease and minimize the use of prescription drugs has earned him the respect and loyalty of patients and peers at Mosaic Life Care.

Home Health Care 101

13

It starts with a skilled health care need, a homebound patient, and physician orders. By Village Home Health and Village Helpers In-Home Care

I

f you’ve had a stay in the hospital, are chronically ill, or need therapy services, your physician may order home health care for you. Today, many kinds of care that once required a hospital stay can often be delivered safely at home. Not all situations are eligible for home health care, but when it is available, home health helps you get better, regain your independence, and become as self-sufficient as possible.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM VILLAGE HOME HEALTH If you select Village Home Health as your agency of choice, this is what you can expect: Before Your First Visit A Village Home Health representative will contact you 24-48 hours after receiving orders from your physician and will schedule your first visit. Village Home Health nurses see patients in 10 counties around Kansas City, in both Missouri and Kansas. Your First Visit When your Village Home Health nurse arrives, he or she will begin by reviewing your Home Care Bill of Rights. It’s important for you to understand your rights as a patient. The nurse will assess your condition, your vital signs, pain level, medications, diet, and the safety of your home given your current health situation and you will discuss your health care goals and learn about your medications and when to take them. All of this goes into creating a “care plan” that is unique to you and specific to your needs. The number of additional visits will depend on your care plan, how well you follow that plan, and how quickly you recuperate. “Home Health Care” vs “In-Home Care” What is the difference between home health care and in-home care? Simply put, home health care is medical care, while in-home care is non-medical care.

THREE MAIN CRITERIA FOR HOME HEALTH There are three main criteria that must be met for home health care to be provided: 1. The care must be medically necessary. 2. The care must be ordered by and overseen by a physician. 3. Medicare requires a patient be “homebound” to receive home health services. This may be temporary, but must be in effect for the duration of the home care. To be homebound means that you have an inability to leave your home, or that it takes a considerable and taxing effort to leave home. CHOOSE THE AGENCY YOU WANT As a home health patient, you have the freedom to choose your desired home health agency. Not sure where to start? Find out which agencies’ services are covered by your health insurance. Then check “Home Health Compare,” on the Medicare.gov website. There you can compare agencies based on how well they care for their patients, how often they use “best practices” in their patient care, and how patients have rated the care they received during a recent home health care experience.

In-home care can be a valuable addition to home health care. These caregivers can help with personal grooming and bathing, offer medication reminders, help prepare meals, take care of light household chores, provide companionship, take you to and from doctor appointments, shop for you and more. They also can be an extra set of eyes to help ensure you are recovering according to your care plan. American Heart Association Kicks Off “Little Hats, Big Hearts” Project in KC Knitters needed to make red baby hats for Kansas City area babies born in February 2017 The American Heart Association is kicking off a campaign called Little Hats, Big Hearts, by collecting knitted or crocheted red baby hats. The Little Hats, Big Hearts program raises awareness of heart disease, the No. 1 killer of Americans, and congenital heart defects, the most common type of birth defect in the country. The hats will be distributed to babies born in hospitals throughout the Kansas City metro area during February, American Heart Month.

DONATE RED HATS BY JANUARY 17, 2017 Hats will be collected from now through January 17, 2017 and volunteers are encouraged to visit www.heart.org/LittleHatsBigHearts for hat patterns and more information about the initiative. This is the second year of the Little Hats, Big Hearts program in Kansas City, but the program provides hats to newborn babies in 35 states across the country. All local donations must be received at the American Heart Association’s office in

Kansas City (6800 W 93rd Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66212) by Jan. 17. Hats can be mailed or delivered in person during business hours. HealthSouth REAL™ Therapy Helping Patients Get Back to Living with Real-Life Scenarios

I

t was about a week into her therapy, and Linda White was optimistic. After a bad break to her leg and hip replacement surgery, Linda was admitted to a HealthSouth rehabilitation hospital. Her goal was to get back to her normal life as quickly as possible. She worked diligently with her therapists, following their instructions. However, when they asked her to make brownies about a week into her 10-day stay, Linda was skeptical.

“I thought, ‘how’s this this going to help my leg,’” she recalled. Linda did as she was told, though, and began cooking in a kitchen station inside the hospital as her therapists watched her every move. “They’d watch me shift my weight and go to the refrigerator to get eggs,” she said. “It was all those things that you do automatically, that you don’t think about.” ABOUT REAL™ THERAPY As part of Realistic Environment Applied Learning, or REAL™ Therapy, Linda and patients like her are relearning everyday activities in a trueto-life environment. A gym at the hospital was transformed into stations mimicking common situations. In addition to the kitchen, there’s also a grocery store, restaurant, laundry mat, gas station, car and ATM. The goal of the pilot program is to transition patients back to their normal lives by performing everyday tasks. “We want them to return to independence,” said Gina, a physical therapist at the hospital. “Lots of times (patients) can’t

picture doing things like grocery shopping or doing laundry. We can simulate these things and let them do them at their own pace.” Oftentimes, she said, the tools used in traditional physical therapy do not translate to real-life scenarios for patients. In REAL™ Therapy at MidAmerica Rehabilitation Hospital, patients are using the same tools they would use outside of the hospital. Those going through the grocery store are equipped with a shopping cart and can select items from the aisle. “I’m just so tickled because this is really what I’m going to face when I get back home,” Linda said after her last day of therapy. “I’m leaving tomorrow, so I wanted to go back again and practice. I just want to be able to get on my own feet.” The stations have different ground surfaces. MidAmerica patients can practice stepping off a curb or climbing into a car. The car seat can be adjusted to a higher level to simulate a patient’s vehicle.

HELP WITH MULTI-TASKING The program isn’t just about physical activities, either. It also helps with multi-tasking, said Speech Language Pathologist Amanda. While signing a check at the restaurant station, patients may also have to figure the tip, and at the grocery store they are pushing a cart while selecting items from the aisles. “It’s really been fabulous to simulate a lot of daily activities and functional problems,” said Amanda of the therapy department. “They are multi-tasking, which is something we don’t usually get to focus on. We’re seeing the individual do several things at once.” PATIENTS ENJOY NEWFOUND CONFIDENCE Since MidAmerica has implemented REAL™ Therapy, the results have been positive. Patients are able to give immediate feedback and they leave the hospital with newfound confidence. It’s not surprising that other hospitals are already looking to implement REAL™ Therapy. Linda could not agree more. When admitted for rehabilitation, she described herself as “a wreck.” She could hardly walk or put any pressure on her injured leg. A week and a half later, she was ready to ease into her SUV and head to the grocery store or maybe even out for a bite to eat. “I feel confident,” Linda said. “That area they have, it’s like a little town. I practiced getting in and out of my car. I also got to go to the restaurant. This place is just so awesome. The experience helped so much.”

t is a frustrating feeling to work hard your whole life to support yourself and your family only to suffer a debilitating injury or illness that cuts your career short. It's even more frustrating when Social Security, the government safety-net that you have been contributing to for years, denies your claim to collect Social Security Disability benefits. At the Law Offices of Sharon J. Meyers, in Kansas City, Missouri, we understand how the frustration caused by not being able to go to work is compounded by the stress of facing mounting bills and not having sufficient income to pay them. Our first message is not to panic if your initial application for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) has been denied. Some 80 percent of firsttime applicants are denied benefits by the Social Security Administration. 0VS$PNQFOTBUJPO)JOHFT6QPO:PVS4VDDFTT We take all SSDI and SSI cases on a contingency fee basis, which means you do not pay attorney fees unless your claim is approved. It is common and important to appeal a denial of an initial SSDI or SSI claim. The key is to be persistent. And it helps to enlist the services of an experienced Social Security disability lawyer who understands the complex application process. 0VSFYQFSJFODFEMFHBMUFBN— and it truly is a team effort at the Law Offices of Sharon J. Meyers — has helped thousands of Missouri and Kansas residents receive the full disability benefits they deserve. We are a local firm that was established in 1981, and we are entirely focused on Social Security disability law.

We know what sort of information wins Social Security disability cases. Once you select us to represent you, we take the lead in gathering all of the medical records and additional information that is necessary to support your claim. We handle all communication with your doctors, submit all forms to the Social Security Administration and monitor every deadline for you. We present your strongest legal arguments to the decision-makers who will approve your claim, including the administrative law judge (ALJ), if your case reaches that level. 5IF*NQPSUBODF0G5SFBUJOH&BDI$BTF *OEJWJEVBMMZ Although we have seen every sort of situation imaginable in more than 30 years of practicing Social Security disability law, we still review each case on its own merit. We use the best practices, but we don't follow formulaic approaches. Bringing your unique story to life for those who will review — and ultimately approve — your claim is the best way to ensure success. It is our mission to help hard-working Kansas and Missouri residents obtain the benefits they have earned. The first step to receiving your benefits is providing us with the opportunity to review the facts of your case during a free consultation, so we can recommend the best steps to take. AbOut ArmOur OAks Armour Oaks Senior Living Community in Kansas City, Missouri, Kansas City’s oldest continuous operating Not-For-Profit entity, is located in eclectic Waldo neighborhood at the corner of 81st and Wornall Road with easy access to I-435. This historic senior living community, just 15 minutes from the famous Country Club Plaza, offers a unique urban oasis with all levels of care, acres of beautifully landscaped grounds and a service minded staff to meet the unique needs of each one of our residents.

Throughout history, influenza viruses have mutated and caused pandemics or global epidemics. In 1890, an especially virulent strain of influenza hit the heartland, killing many Americans. Those who survived that pandemic and lived to experience the 1918 pandemic tended to be less susceptible to the disease. No one knows exactly how many people died during the 1918-1919 influenza pandemics. During the 1920’s, researchers estimated that 21.5 million people died as a result of the 1918-1919 pandemic. AbOut the First Flu VACCine In 1933, researchers discovered that viruses cause influenza. Prior to 1933, a bacteria was thought to cause the flu. In 1938, Jonas Salk and Thomas Francis developed the first flu vaccine against flu viruses. This first flu vaccine was used to protect the U.S. Military during World War II. During these turbulent years, here at Armour Oaks, our house physician was Dr. C.S. Merriman. He dealt with the many epidemics of the time including influenza. He was able to save many lives here at Armour Oaks during the 1890 epidemics that struck the country thanks to the improved medical knowledge of the times. Influenza is always mutating and we saw this first hand in 2009 with H1N1. Some strains of H1N1 are endemic in humans and cause a small fraction of all seasonal influenza. In June of 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the new strain of swine-origin H1N1 as a pandemic. This strain spread worldwide and had caused about 17,000 deaths by the start of 2010.

enCOurAging seniOrs tO get A Flu VACCinAtiOn eVery yeAr It has been clearly documented that influenza infections in persons over age 65 can result in serious complications leading to pneumonia, chronic disease exacerbations, hospitalization and even death. It is a major public health concern that American elderly persons continue to suffer from vaccine-preventable deaths, despite advancements in modern medicine and technology. That’s why here at Armour Oaks we offer a flu vaccination to every elder on campus yearly. We encourage everyone to get vaccinated to minimize the threat the virus causes each individual.

Armour Oaks is dedicated to providing a secure, homelike environment where seniors can live with dignity and independence while receiving the very best in personalized health and social services to meet their needs. The staff and Board of Directors share a commitment to the person-centered approach to senior care without regard to race, national origin, gender, age, handicap, disability or religious belief. sCheDule A tOur We are confident that when you choose Armour Oaks as your new home for Kansas City senior living, you will experience the same quality of care that our seniors have received for decades. Sleep and the Brain

23

5 Important Functions of the Brain While You Sleep By Center for TMJ and Sleep Apnea

While we are sleeping, resting our bodies, our mind goes to work.

At bedtime, you shut down your computer, TV, smartphone and your busy schedule… but now it is time for your brain to go to work. The 8 hour workday is just starting for the brain. The brain remains highly active throughout your sleep to allow you to perform a host of functions during the course of the day. 1. IT CLEARS OUT THE TRASH. Cerebral spinal fluid is pumped more quickly throughout the brain while you sleep. It acts like a vacuum cleaner taking away waste products and toxic proteins that can lead to dementia over time. So when you wake, you start your day with a clean slate. 2. IT LOCKS IN WHAT YOU LEARN. The brain restores and retains information that was not ingrained during the day…let’s say like the person you promised to call for a very important

reason. Experts call this “consolidation” and it is very important in protecting against further information loss as well as improving your ability to learn when you are awake. It even can enhance your language skills and hand-eye coordination. 3. IT PRESERVES IMPORTANT MEMORIES. This is especially true for emotional memories. Your brain selects and enhances the experiences that are most valuable to you…your child’s graduation from high school or the birth of a child. What is just as amazing is that it downgrades the memories that are not as important, like what you ate 5 days ago. 4. IT HELPS YOU KEEP CHRONOLOGY STRAIGHT. The brain replays the memories of your daily events and it also files away and reestablishes the order in which those things occurred. This happens during the deepest stage of sleep. 5. IT PREVENTS YOU FROM ACTING OUT YOUR DREAMS.

In the deepest stage of sleep, stage 4 sleep, the part of your brain that is responsible for relaying nerve impulses throughout the spinal cord sends a message to turn off motor neurons, causing temporary paralysis. Why? This happens so you don’t find yourself physically acting out your dreams and the stories that are running through your mind while you are asleep.

NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SLEEP APNEA Maintaining regular breathing during sleep is a problem for over 20 million Americans. As a result, they do not receive the necessary amount of oxygen their body needs to rejuvenate from proper, restful sleep. Moderate to severe levels of snoring may really be Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) — also referred to as “sleep disordered breathing.” Sleep apnea is associated with cardiovascular disease, daytime sleepiness and even increased mortality. Sleep related accidents of all types, including motor vehicles, has been said to average over $50 billion per year. QUALIFIED SLEEP DENTIST Dr. Pribyl at Center for TMJ and Sleep Apnea is a qualified sleep dentist who uses cost-effective sleep screening tools to determine the effectiveness of an oral appliance to manage sleep apnea and snoring. The measurements he uses allow the proper sleep orthotic (sleep appliance) to be constructed for the patient to wear. The appliance is designed to increase the airway when sleeping to deter or eliminate snoring and assist with mild to moderate sleep apnea. Determining jaw position and airway opening are the keys to managing these conditions. Many patients are able to reduce or quit using their CPAP machine altogether. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Pribyl for a Sleep Apnea consult, please call our office at 816-795-1000, or visit us online at www.tmjsleepapnea.com.

Share and Encourage This Holiday Season By Rachel Lewis

T

he holiday season is a time for families to come together and share not only love and warmth but also encourage and enjoy each other’s interests. Some of my favorite memories revolve around doing just that. I am a reader, but I attribute a lot of my love for books to my grandmother. Every year she would gift me a new book. The books she gave me ranged from children’s stories to short non-fiction, but they would always be interesting and usually uplifting. The stories contained within the pages of those books would keep me entertained for days. Later on, I came to realize the best part of her gift wasn’t the physical book (even though I still treasure and re-read some of them), but the ability to savor and discuss the stories inside them. She turned me into a reader as well as a thinker while growing both my reading and speaking skills. The books she gave to me truly were gifts that kept on giving and made me into a better person.

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING In keeping with that tradition, I love when families come together for the holidays. It is the most wonderful time to bask in the love that families share. I especially like when families make the time to encourage and share in each other’s interests. Without my grandmother’s encouragement, I would never have become the reader and lover of literature that I am today. Making the holidays about spending time with family helps show your teens that you are there for them. It lets them know that they can rely on you as parents to understand them and encourage them in their pursuits. That is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

confidence building are pushed to the side to emphasize the curriculum. We want students to succeed not only in the classroom but also in whatever they choose to do after school. The skills contained in our weekly exercises will help them do just that. SOAR WITH SUCCESS! I know that the tradition I remember happens in other families as well, and I am happy that new teens will get the skills they need to soar with success.
