3rd - 4th November 2012

Message from the Deputy Director-General of Health (Medical) It is my great pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the 1st Malaysian Breast and Endocrine Surgery Course. This two-day course is the first collaboration between the Ministry of Health, Malaysia, and the College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia with the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IAES) and the Breast Surgery International (BSI). Combined together, the IAES and the BSI, under the auspices of International Society of Surgery, bring with them knowledge and experience from world renowned leaders in the field of Breast and Endocrine Surgery. I can assure you that there will be much to learn in this course. The aim of this course is to further expand our knowledge in the finer management of breast and endocrine diseases. Topics chosen are specific to particular aspects of breast and endocrine diseases. The course is designed to involve and engage the audience in a discussion with the experts rather than a typical lecture course. I hope this course will provide an opportunity for breast and endocrine surgeons to learn and exchange ideas, as well as an avenue for networking. It is my hope that the knowledge attained from this course will spur enthusiasm to further enhance our current surgical practice. I wish you a fruitful course and an exciting time here in Putrajaya.

Datuk Dr Noor Hisham bin Abdullah Deputy Director General of Health (Medical) Ministry of Health Malaysia & Head and Senior Consultant Surgeon Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery Putrajaya Hospital

1st Malaysian Breast & Endocrine Surgery Course

Message from the President of the College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia The Ministry of Health Malaysia recognizes that surgeons in the Ministry of Health are required to update their knowledge and to acquire new skills to be able to provide the best care for their patients. In recent years, the Ministry has worked with the College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia (CSAMM) to develop courses that will meet this objective. The two courses which are running regularly now are the Acute Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course and the Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) course. Breast cancer is the commonest cancer in Malaysian women, and thyroid disease is also very common in Malaysia. Breast and Endocrine Surgery (BES) is one of the subspecialties under General Surgery and the Ministry has a three-year fellowship programme for surgeons interested in taking up this specialty. The Breast Surgery International (BSI) and the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IAES) are integrated societies under the International Surgical Society which has its headquarters in Geneva. These two societies also have a goal to work for international teaching in surgery in developed and developing countries. On 25th May 2012, the Ministry of Health and the CSAMM signed an memorandum of understanding with these two societies to work together with a local organizing committee to develop a curriculum for a BES course that will benefit surgeons interested in BES in Malaysia. With this course, it is hoped that surgeons in the Ministry will acquire new knowledge and improve their skills in the management of breast and endocrine diseases. I would like to thank the surgeons from the BSI and the IAES, who have taken the time to run the first Breast and Endocrine Surgery Course in Malaysia. I would also like to thank the local organizing committee chaired by Dr Sarinah Basro with Professor Dr Rohaizak Muhammad as their advisor for their effort in putting the programme together.

Message from the Advisor It is with great pleasure that I welcome all the delegates to the 1st Malaysian Breast & Endocrine Surgery Course which will be conducted on 3rd to 4th November 2012 at the Hospital Putrajaya. The course is organised by the College of Surgeon, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia together with the Ministry of Health Malaysia and International Association of Endocrine Surgeon (IAES), following the signing of the MoU between the three parties. The course consists of lectures by invited speakers on important and common topics, followed by local case presentations and discussions. The first day will focus on Breast Diseases followed by Endocrine Disorders on the second day. During the course, the participants will have the opportunity to have interactive discussion with the speakers who are specially invited from the IAES and the Breast Surgery International (BSI). We are privileged to have the two speakers from IAES, Professor Dr Robert Parkyn and Professor Dr Thomas Lennard, and the representatives from the BSI, Associate Professor Dr Kerstin Sandelin and Associate Professor Dr Shawna C Willey. This is the first time the course is conducted together with the IAES and will provide a golden opportunity for the EndocrineBreast trainee surgeons and general surgeons in Malaysia to share the experience in treating patients with the diseases. In addition to the scientific programme, other activities include visit by the speakers to the ENB training centres and the opportunity to observe the cases treated in the local hospitals. We look forward to welcoming you to our meeting!
