Overview This comprehensive three-day course has been designed to provide an update of the full scope of the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery by recognized leaders in their respective fields. Content will include recent advances and new approaches to patient evaluation and treatment. The information presented will be current, evidence-based and clinically relevant and supported by case discussions and simulations to illustrate the salient points of the didactic presentations.

Statement of Need New York University College of Dentistry’s comprehensive Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Course provides an opportunity to gain the knowledge of recent advances in patient evaluations and treatment necessary to provide quality care to patients requiring oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Professional Practice Gaps Surgeons need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of current and innovative treatment options; patient evaluation, timing and sequencing of surgical interventions; reconstruction, fixation, distraction, and biomaterials choices; peri-operative patient management and prevention and management of complications; and new technologies.

Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, the attendee should be able to: 1. Discuss the impact of systemic diseases in the field of maxillofacial surgery and apply to evaluation and patient management strategies. 2. Develop criteria for the use and administration of ambulatory sedation and general anesthesia in order to establish best practices. 3. Explain differential diagnosis and a treatment plan for odontogenic and non-odontogenic pathologic conditions of the maxillofacial region. 4. Select treatment options for maxillofacial reconstruction based on patient evaluation. 5. Develop a comprehensive evaluation of a trauma patient and identify approaches for treatment and options for managing post-operative pain. 6. Discuss methods for evaluating and treating patients with dentofacial deformities and head and neck infections to improve outcomes. 7. Identify the etiology and microbiology of infections of the maxillofacial region and treatment strategies. 8. Identify the etiology, patterns and frequency of cleft lip and palate deformities and the treatment based on criteria discussed. 9. Discuss the assessment of dentoalveolar surgical treatments and apply methods of preventing complications and patient management to improve outcomes. 10. Evaluate and develop criteria for facial esthetics and apply various surgical approaches. 11. Discuss algorithms for temporomandibular disorders and the treatment based on comprehensive examination and clinical findings. 12. Describe a strategy to evaluate patients requiring pre-prosthetic surgery and implants based on indications and contraindications of placement of dental implants.
