BOSS – Access to Industry What is BOSS? BOSS is a new Access to Industry project aimed at Breaking Opinions Surrounding Substances. The BOSS project will work with young people aged 16-19 years, living in Edinburgh, who are at risk of developing problematic alcohol and substance misuse issues. Substances are legal highs, alcohol & drugs. The opinions the project is trying to break are young people’s. What will BOSS do? There will be a range of support that young people can access through the project:  Mentoring: one-to-one support to identify and focus on the barriers young people face in their journey from problematic substance use.  Support: addiction recovery support based on a cognitive approach.  Drugs Education: exploring effect and impact of young people’s drugs of choice.  Goal Setting: Action planning to set targets and milestones for individuals.  Routine Building: a programme of activities based on the young person’s interest designed to assist them achieve their goals  Signposting: referring and utilising the specialised services of other agencies and organisations  Education: the opportunity to gain SQA qualifications in a range of subjects.  Aftercare: On achievement of goals there will be continued support to ensure these are sustained. What will be the outcome of working with BOSS? For the young person the outcome will be the achievement of their Action Plan and the steps they take to reach this. Their goals may include: Qualifications, Training, Further Education and / or Employment How will BOSS be delivered? The BOSS project’s aim is to work collaboratively and in partnership with other organisations and agencies. It needs to do this to identify young people at risk of being substance misusers and who may benefit from the programme. BOSS staff will actively seek referrals through meeting with agencies; attending organisations and agency team meetings; and delivering drop in sessions. We can participate in information stalls at relevant events for young people and/or professionals working within the field. We will also work with schools and seek referrals from schools. Where will BOSS be delivered? Initially BOSS will have meetings and assessments with young people in a place they are comfortable – this could be the agency or organisation that they are already working with. Over time these meetings will start to transfer to BOSS’ city centre premises at 156 Cowgate. The Mentor would organise this phased progression. Who will BOSS work with? The young people will come from any background: they may be looked after; young offenders; or are in danger of becoming NEET (not in employment, education or training); or from some other background. What all young people will be is at risk of developing a problematic substance misuse issue. Identifying young people who would benefit from BOSS BOSS will work in an outreach capacity with organisations and will encourage agencies to refer appropriate young people to the project. Organisations and agencies will know the young people they work with the best. If they believe that their uses of substances are becoming an issue, for whatever reason, then they would be a suitable referral to the programme. Working collaboratively While the young person is working with the BOSS project there are no restrictions on them engaging with any other agency or organisations. BOSS mentors will maintain contact with the referring organisation in order to update them on the progress of the person they refer. The project needs to work collaboratively with a wide range of other services and activities in order to provide the best support for young people. This will be key to its success. Funding BOSS is funded for 3 years (from November 2014) through Lloyds TSB Foundation/Partnership Drugs Initiative. This funding promotes voluntary sector work with vulnerable children and young people; in particular this project addresses the strand that addresses the need of young people in need of support due to their own alcohol and drug issues.  We can put young people through driving theory and their test (Free)  We can put young people through CSCS card test (Free)  We have an employability class running every Tuesday from 1530 to 1700 For more information you can contact the BOSS project caseworker Scott Hannah (m) 07809 554 872/[email protected] Kerry Southen (m) 07809 555 703/[email protected].
