ALL LASERS, ALL THE TIME Last year saw a significant change in the global industrial laser market. Fiber laser sales flirted with the $1 billion dollar revenue level and carried the total market on its back to stronger growth for the year. Readers of Industrial Laser Solutions, in print and on the Web, picked up on this as we reported, early and often, on the increasing acceptance of this powerful technology by all sectors of the world industrial manufacturing community. While fiber lasers for sheet metal cutting were headline grabbers elsewhere, Industrial Laser Solutions also spotted the penetration of this technology into micromachining with editorial on growth opportunities for low power applications. In addition to fiber laser technology, we also kept readers advised of progress being made with high-power direct diode lasers in macro-applications in industries such as automotive and aerospace. And we continued our interest in progress for ultra-fast pulse laser technology as a growing supplier industry. This industry brought more affordable solutions to the microprocessing market, such as glass cutting of display screens for hand held communication devices. Industrial Laser Solutions is the only global publication that advises readers of the diverse applications served by a variety of new lasers. Industrial Laser Solutions is read by qualified manufacturing professionals in more than 140 countries worldwide; with our current demographic circulation split about 60% domestic and 40% international. update Laser cutting of through vias in quartz PORTLAND, OR—Quartz is one of the most important materials widely used in the fields of chemical analysis, biotechnology, optoelectronics, micro-optics, and fiber technology. Laser micromachining is a powerful tool for quartz fabrication, with the advantages of no tool wear, high precision, and flexibility. However, quartz presents two major difficulties for laser machining. First of all, it is optically transparent from the visible to near-infrared wavelength range, making it very difficult to process with lasers of these wavelengths. Secondly, because of this weak interaction, high peak power is necessary to initiate laser machining and the associated high pulse energy typically produces a violent interaction that results in chipping and cracking, yieldOptical microscopy ing very rough cuts. Eolite Lasers recently reported of a 1.2mm-diameter on a new laser glass cutting tech- through via with nique for use with high-strength, very small chipping chemically tempered glass in size on both the top the March/April issue of Indus- (a) and bottom (b) trial Laser Solutions (“Precision surface of the cut, glass processing with picosec- indicating zero taper ond laser pulses”). In this work, angle. the company demonstrated cutting both internal and external curved features with chip sizes of less than a few microns. It has since expanded this technique to drill taper-free holes with excellent edge quality in quartz.

moves the focus from the bottom surface to the top surface to complete the cut, as the company describes in the March/April article. Results

Both the entrance and exit diameters are about the same—1.22mm—indicating a vertical hole wall without significant taper angle (SEE FIGURE). Also, the edge quality of the hole is excellent, with the chip size on both sides measuring less than 20µm. Results show that a UV nanosecond laser provides a very good solution for fabrication of small vias in quartz. The chip size is well controlled by careful choice of laser parameters. The company found that the process speed for processing these vias equates 200µm to about 0.12mm/s or approximately 30s per via. This cutting rate is significantly slower than that achieved in prior glass work, and the company speculated that this is primarily due to the higher 200µm strength and fracture toughness of quartz compared to glass—more energy is required to remove the material. With further process and beam positioning optimization, the company plans to reduce process time to less than 10s per via with similar cut quality as reported here.

The BoreasFlex fiber laser, operating at 343nm, was utilized to fabricate 1.2mm-diameter through vias in a 0.7mm-thick quartz substrate. The fiber laser can generate pulses ranging from 1 to 190ns at 343nm, and the repetition rate can reach up to 1MHz with a maximum power of 20W. The collimated laser beam is focused to a spot size of about 9µm on the target and moved in a circular path consisting of a number of concentric circles with a galvo scanner. Conclusion

The company has extended its previously reported glass cutting technique to include cutting of vias in quartz with no wall taper and chip size on both entrance and exit of less than 20µm, with about a 30s cycle time for a 1.2mm-diameter hole. It expects this process to find application in several industrial areas, including microfluidics and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).

research project to extend the range of application of hybrid laser welding to the vertical welding positions 3G and 3F (groove and fillet weld) is currently underway. The welding system developed combines a hybrid laser welding process and an opposed second gas metal arc (GMA) welding process. The implementation of a scanning mirror enables an oscillation of the laser beam to avoid welding defects and increase the gap bridging ability, and the usage of an optical sensor system allows seam detection, seam tracking, and an automated selection of the welding parameters as a function of the detected width of the joining gap. German shipyards are straining under enormous and everincreasing competitive pressure. While the big Asian shipbuilding nations—China, South Korea, and Japan—have been able to increase their part of the worldwide supply up to 93 percent in 2011, Germany, at only 1 percent, fell to number 8 [1]. As a consequence of this competitive pressure, the German shipyards ceased container shipbuilding during the last couple of years and have concentrated on the building of yachts, cruise ships, marine ships, and special ships. But also in these sectors, the competitors—particularly FIGURE 1. Meyer from Asia—are edging into the market [2]. Meyer Werft (Papenburg, Germany), founded in 1795 and still family-owned, is a typical example for this development. From fishing and pilot boats over container ships and ferries, the shipyard transformed to become one of the leading producers of cruise liners (FIGURE 1). This development is accompanied with a steady effort to improve the production process. In 2000, Meyer Werft was the first shipyard to introduce hybrid laser welding into panel production (up to 20 m in length), and was followed by other European shipyards like Fincantieri or Aker Finyards [3, 4]. This has led to reduced throughput times (high welding speed and high weld-in depth) and reduced follow-up costs (low thermal distortion). Since the implementation of hybrid laser welding, the development has been carried on towards larger panels, higher plate thicknesses, and the usage of solid-state lasers. For that purpose, Meyer Werft maintains an R&D department with a state-of-the-art research lab, and cooperates closely with research facilities such as the RWTH Aachen University – ISF Welding and Joining Institute. Hybrid laser welding (three disk lasers and five CO2 lasers are currently used) has evolved to the most important welding technique for Meyer Werft, as their largest cruise ships (350m long and 40m wide) contain around 450km of hybrid laser-welded seaming and the maximum panel size is 30 × 25m.

environment inside the package is vital to the efficacy of the MEMS device application. This is particularly true for the MEMS sensor segment that already produces glassencapsulated electronic chips used for sensing rotation, acceleration, and pressure in various safety-critical applications in the automotive, train, and other transportation industries. It is also the case for many applications developed in the fast-growing biomedical segment. A key benefit of today’s laser-based welding solutions (FIGURE 2) is that it enables safer encapsulation of sensitive materials from the effects of high temperatures or chemical substances, which are produced in other existing welding techniques. “Today’s laser-based glass-to-glass welding results in separate pieces of glass joined together, becoming in a way one single piece FIGURE 2. Primoceler lab engineers work on the laser welding unit. of material,” according to Kangastupa. “This leads to good mechanical properties of the metal oxide semiconductor) image sensors, must remain highly welding seam—a property that is highly important in the aero and space industry. In space conditions, welded objects, including reliable and airtight, even in the toughest of conditions, such as encapsuled microchips devices such as CMOS (complementary in extreme weather conditions, and having to face a significantly increased threat of radiation damage.” He states that existing technology makes it possible to bond pieces of glass together hermetically without the need for high temperatures or adhesives—even the sealed component or material remains unharmed by the welding process itself. “Advanced laser processes involve a highly focused laser beam that lets various components sealed inside the encapsulation to remain under room temperature,” Kangastupa continues. “This presents manufacturers with an array of new possibilities for the production of electronic, engineering, medical, and scientific research devices such as implantable chips and sensors.” “Unlike the joining of glass with adhesive techniques, the seam produced via glass-on-glass laser welding is practically eternal because it doesn’t include any adhesives that could gradually turn brittle following the slow evaporation of its chemicals,” he adds.

ends up in a landfill, it can last for several hundreds of thousands of years. Glass doesn’t wear, tear, or gradually degrade like the many adhesives or additional substrates used in other available welding processes do. Glass is also transparent to radio frequency (RF) wavelengths, which allows the transfer of data or energy possible through the glass-encapsulated device, unlike titanium-packaged applications. Vihinen notes that as technology continues to advance, laserbased glass-to-glass welding solutions could quickly and costeffectively assist in the production of new in vitro diagnostic devices that help detect various diseases, physiological conditions, and characteristics of the body’s organisms’ conditions and diseases, possibly replacing time-consuming and expensive laboratory tests. For instance, the incidence of a heart attack may be able to be detected, in the future, instantaneously from a single blood sample. Moreover, research shows that brain damage and memory disorders could someday be treated with new high-tech brain implants governed by human emotion and could even guide our thinking. Studies suggest that brain implants could also enhance human abilities by quickening reaction times, promoting a person’s learning ability, and even improving memory.

Adding flexibility to manufacturing

Miniaturization will continue to be a trend as long as consumers continue to be interested in portability. A handheld mobile phone today is already totally different now from what it was when first introduced by Motorola in the 1970s—when it weighed a whopping 2.2 lbs! Kangastupa says, “When the innovations in new glass materials and laser processes are combined, we can foresee continued part reduction and miniaturization in mobile devices. It is possible to integrate all the features needed for display devices on a very thin glass and, in a final step, laser-weld the second glass on top to protect the display. The second glass with a hermetic weld line can have more functions than protection against environment. It can include thin-film layers needed for touch-panel and antireflection properties, or for some new features which are today available only in the laboratories.” He adds that laser-based glass-on-glass welding could also deliver cost savings to manufacturers, as it enables a more flexible production process. Manufacturers can continue with trial runs to assess how a particular product works, or they could manufacture small production series first until they are confident about the production processes’ final outcome. According to Kangastupa, “If needed, even one encapsulation of, for instance, a microchip can be done at a time to ensure that everything goes right before full-scale production begins.” ✺

Glass-on-glass welding offers opportunities in the electronics industry, where handheld devices are continuing to shrink in size.

Building better medical diagnostics

Jorma Vihinen, research manager at Tampere University of Technology, agrees that in the future, laser-based microwelding methods will spread strongly in the biomedical industry. New applications are likely to arise rapidly, for instance, in the field of human medicine, as the knowledge of new laser-based, glass-to-glass sealing methods increases among industrial players. Why is the joining of glass so important for the biomedical industry? Glass as a material is highly suitable for biomedical purposes due to its useful properties. First, glass is “neutral” in a sense that it is biocompatibile with body fluids when implanted inside the human body. This means that it doesn’t cause immunological rejection to the implant that would result in the need to remove the object from the body. Secondly, the lifespan of glass is essentially infinite: if it
