Fall, 2015

York Rite Crusader Governor General’s Message The 58th General Assembly is now a pleasant memory. We shared the warmth of fraternizing with our friends and Companion Knights, both new and of long standing. The hospitality of Louisville and the Kentucky Companion Knights and their Ladies was outstanding. “Special Thanks!” and “Job well done!” to Kentucky Grand Governor Bill Riggs, General Chairman, his Lady Willetta, and all their committee members for the way they conveniently provided for our every need and made our time in Louisville so pleasant. Hearty congratulations to the members of the Gerald A. Ford OPC Class. A personal highlight of this Annual Assembly, for me, came in dubbing and proclaiming each of you Distinguished Brethren of the Order of the Purple Cross of York. We look forward to your leadership and to sharing with you again in Vancouver and beyond.

Assemblies. The Grand Governors are again requested to consider arranging “Regional Events.” These are great opportunities to meet and share with many Companion Knights.

My personal congratulations to the 115 Companion Knights elected to receive the Order of the Purple Cross next year at the 59th General Assembly in Vancouver. As well, we offer congratulations to those York Rite Colleges recognized in the Spencer Award reporting and those who were recognized by Regional Awards. You are known by your works.

Something we all need to think about in a quote taken from M.W.Bro. Donald A, Campbell’s Address, July 15th 2015.

As Masons we are all regularly encouraged to practice Charity. The York Rite Sovereign College of North America utilizes the “Charitable Fund U.S.A.” and the “Charitable Foundation of Canada” to manage its charitable works. These works rely solely on donations and bequests from our Companion Knights of York. Personally, as Governor General, I encourage you and every Companion Knight to make an annual donation. I challenge every member of the York Rite Colleges to become members of the Athelstan Nobility and join us in proudly wearing the distinctive jewel. Those of you who are already members, continue and renew your support. You will find information on how to participate in the Athelstan Nobility elsewhere in this issue of the Crusader. The Charitable Fund of the U.S.A. is providing a blue donation envelope for your convenience. Please use it. It is customary to focus on what is not going well and to endeavour to make it right. Masons have been doing this for over 250 years. We are no exception today. It is said that the only constant today is change. My Brethren, the fundamental tenets and principles of our masonic art are as valid, worthwhile and needed today as ever. It is up to us to live our lives as an example to others, thus demonstrating the values we hold to be true.

“The world about us is becoming increasingly uncivil. A 2013 nationwide survey found that Americans encounter various acts of incivility an average of 17 times during the course of a week.

I am sure that you join me in recognizing R.Em.Dist. Brethren David M. Dryer and J. William Riggs elected as Regents of the York Rite Sovereign College. We look forward to their contributions. Two Distinguished Brethren were elected Regents Emeriti at this 58th General Assembly. We extend appreciation and thanks for their dedication and service to our Order to R.Em.Dist.Bro. Jeffrey T. Powers, twenty-two years; and to R.Em.Dist.Bro. Thurston H. (Dick) Dickinson, ten years.

We tolerate being talked at, instead of talking with each other. Listening has become an endangered skill. We have allowed divisions to grow into an abyss so deep, that simply getting people into the same room to talk has become difficult, and at times impossible. We have allowed intolerance to evolve into self-righteousness, condemnation and, ultimately, persecution. And we all know that’s wrong.

I look forward with eager anticipation to this term’s travels and visitations as your Governor General. Meeting with the Companion Knights across our jurisdiction and representing the York Rite Sovereign College at various Masonic Grand

difficult and complex topics. It is not just about “being nice” and keeping the dialogue on a superficial level. It does not silence those who wish to be heard. Instead, civil dialogue allows all voices to be valued, including those that may be of a perceived minority view.

Let’s look at our fraternal organization. We are taught to be good citizens and to welcome the opinions of others, we have learned how to be civil and respectful, and we respect all religions and welcome all believers in The Great Architect of the Universe, in whatever form that belief may take.

So if society hungers for a return to civility, and if we have the common language, tools, values and desires to create a better world, isn’t it our duty to do all that we can to breed civility back into society?” Be someone’s Masonic Hero! Live your life well and be an example for others. Strive to do what is good and great. Enjoy Freemasonry! Share the energy!

MASONIC UNITY IN GEORGIA Easter Sunrise Service - Alexandria, Virginia

In a show of Unity from the Masonic Bodies of Georgia, 84 Sir Knights and Ladies traveled to Alexandria, Virginia to take part in the Grand Encampment Easter Sunrise Service held at The George Washington Masonic Memorial. While in the Washington, DC area, a wreath was placed at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery by the presiding officers of four of the Masonic Bodies in Georgia, Right Eminent Grand Commander Terry Hensley, Most Worshipful Grand Master Douglas McDonald, Most Excellent Grand High Priest Michael Wilson and Most Illustrious Grand Master Charles Taylor. Members from all of our Georgia York Rite Colleges were invited and many participated in the trip. “We were ecstatic about getting to show the Masonic Unity that we have in Georgia. I asked the Grand Master, the Grand High Priest and the Illustrious Grand Master of Royal & Select Masters to join me in placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns On Saturday April 4th while dressed in the regalia of our respective Grand Bodies. The journey of this Easter trip has been one of the most touching and memorable of my life. As Easter Sunday was also my 57th Birthday, I will always believe that it doesn’t get any better than this.” - RESK Terry Hensley, Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Georgia “First Lady Carol and I will be forever grateful to the Grand York Rite Bodies of Georgia for the invitation to attend the Washington, DC Easter Sunrise Excursion. This experience will undoubtedly go down in our memories as one of the most important events of my service to the craft as Grand Master. The ties between the Grand Lodge of Georgia, Free & Accepted Masons, and the Grand York Rite of Georgia are magnificently strong. We are reminded by this show of unity that United we stand, divided we fall.” - MWB Douglas W. McDonald, Sr., Grand Master of Masons in Georgia Submitted by Mark Bradley, Secretary, W.
