Sunday, April 12th 7:00 pm NSJC POPS presents

Rabbi Marvin Tokayer “Rediscovering Jewish History in Asia”

Rabbi Tokayer served as a U.S. Air Force chaplain in Japan. Upon discharge, he served as the rabbi for the Jewish community of Japan. He discovered, literally, the last of the Chinese Jews, located a long-lost Jewish cemetery in Nagasaki, contributed to the Encyclopedia Judaica and acted as a bridge for many travelers between East and West. We look forward to hearing how he became spellbound by the threads of a story that he began piecing together, searching for documents and tracking down the people, both Jewish and Japanese, who had taken part in the rescue of Jews from the Holocaust.

Yom HaShoah Observance Thursday, Apr 16th 7:30 pm

“Preserving the Memory of the Holocaust In a World Without Survivors” Stewart Ain, a staff writer for The Jewish Week, and his wife, Meryl Ain, Ed.D., coauthors of The Living Memories Project: Legacies That Last, will discuss the importance of remembering the victims and lessons of the Holocaust as survivors dwindle in number. They will share the research done for that book, as well as for their current project, which focuses on the responsibility of the Second Generation to keep alive the memories, stories, values, and legacies of their relatives, both those who survived and those who were murdered in the Holocaust. They will also discuss restitution efforts for art, insurance, looted property and pain and suffering, that are still underway.

Celebrate Israel Parade Sunday, May 31st 11 am - 4 pm The theme of this year’s 51st annual Celebrate Israel Parade is “Israel Imagines.” Going up 5th Avenue from 57th to 74th Streets, it will be broadcast on television on FOX MY9 from noon until 2 pm. It will be livestreamed from the celebrateisraelny.org website from noon until 3 pm. The parade itself has been an annual event in New York since an impromptu march to celebrate the young state of Israel first took place on Riverside Drive in 1964. Since then, the parade has drawn people of all ages from Jewish schools, synagogues, and a variety of other organizations as spectators or in a full-fledged march up 5th Avenue. The Congregation and Board of Trustees offer their deepest condolences to the following families:

Ben Kramer - On the loss of his father, Elliot Kramer, on February 3, 2015. Sheri Fox - On the loss of her mother, Rhoda Miller, on February 4, 2015. Zichranam livracha, may the memory of the righteous remain for a blessing.

Celebrate Yom HaAtzmaut - Israel Independence Day! We don’t often think of miracles happening in our own day and age. Or if we do, we imagine them of the “Grand Canyon at sunset” type. Yet the founding of the State of Israel in 1948 was a true miracle. A people that had suffered and endured hardships for nearly two millennia were able to return and recreate an existence in their ancient homeland. That to me is a miracle worth celebrating. And celebrate we will this Yom HaAtzma’ut, which begins Wednesday evening, April 22nd and continues all day Thursday, April 23 rd (like all Jewish holidays). This year it will be marked both in the traditional ways that we celebrate miracles, and with a special program.

On that Thursday, Hallel will be recited during morning services along with a special haftarah from Isaiah (10:3212:6, an ancient passage that has profound resonance when attached to this occasion.) I encourage you to look it up yourself and see what you think! Again, these and several other small changes are all meant to make the services of the day special in honor of the miracle that is Israel. Changes to services are only one part of what is meant to be special on Yom HaAtzmaut though, for this is a living miracle, not one from centuries ago. That is why, from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm on Wednesday night April 22nd, we will show a special film, Beneath the Helmet. It tells of an experience nearly universal in Israel, the transition from high school to military service. You can learn more about it at beneathhelmet.com. This will be a moving way to connect to the miracle which is Israel. And what would any Jewish holiday be without food? We will offer felafel and Israeli food, available for a small fee. I hope all of you will find a way to connect to the real miracle that is Israel!

Rebbe’s Tish FOOD PANTRY

This is an election you can’t afford to ignore. Israel’s character is in the balance.

The election we’re talking about isn’t taking place in Israel, but it will impact directly on what happens there - and on Jewish life around the world. It’s an election that has to matter to every Jew who cares about the Jewish state and the kind of society it will become, and whether or not all Jewis will be able to live, practice and pray there in keeping with their own understanding of our tradition. The election we’re talking about is for the World Zionist Congress which will convene later this year in Jerusalem. It will set policy and elect officers, directly influencing the allocation of hundreds of millions of dollars for initiatives that will impact on the nature of Israel and its ties with world Jewry for years to come. Elections to that Congress are taking place now. Vote MERCAZ, Slate #2, the voice of Conservative/Masorti Jews around the world, transforming into deed our passion for fashioning the Jewish state as an exemplary pluralistic and democratic society every Jew can proudly call home.

President’s Welcome Phyllis Frank, NSJC President

[With pleasure, I introduce our NSJC Board member Lenore Frank, who capably oversees our Continuing Education portfolio. Lenore serves on the Board of Trustees with a wealth of experience and a very strong commitment to the mission of our synagogue. Not only do Lenore and I share a passion for the welfare of our NSJC community, but we share the same surname and live just minutes from each other. Todah Rabah, Lenore for all you and your husband, Claude, do for our NSJC.] My first big volunteer position at NSJC was Hebrew School Committee Chair, 35 years ago. Our Machon met three days a week back then, with a student enrollment of more than 450 children. Over the years I have been involved in numerous committees and held a variety of Board of Trustee positions, including president. (I held that position for three years, working with three rabbis: Edelman, Shapiro and Hoffman.) NSJC has always been, and still remains, a part of our family life. There is something

very comforting about going to our shul, meeting friends and feeling part of our community. This wonderful community celebrated with us when our children got married and when my mother married my father-in-law! And they supported us when our parents died. My current portfolio as a trustee is lay leader in charge of Continuing Education. In that context I have worked with Robin Appel on our Jewish Film Festival for the past six years. We are very proud of this program and look forward to making it bigger each year. I am also very proud of my work with PJ Library. This program, started by the philanthropist Harold Grinspoon, sends a free book/CD each month to Jewish children across the country and even in other parts of the world. 120 families in our congregation have children who receive these wonderful books that feature Jewish holidays and Jewish values. (I am always looking for local donors to help support the PJ Library program.) As part of this program we have held events at

Rabbi’s New Midrash Study Saturdays after Mincha Learn what the Sages said about the weekly portion. Consider getting your own copy of Artscroll’s “Kleinman Edition of Midrash Rabbah: Vayikra Volume 1.”

Many thanks to...

NSJC for our PJ families (some of whom are not synagogue members): a Purim Party, a Havdalah Happening, a Bagels and Books Party, and we are planning a Passover event next month. PJ Library at NSJC also invites PJ families to attend our regular Friday Night Tot Shabbat programs. My husband Claude and I maintain our NSJC Food Pantry. The pantry supports our local community and is not limited to Jewish families. We ensure that the food we give out is properly dated and sometimes it is necessary for us to purchase items to fill in supplies. We appreciate the efforts of our congregants who donate food items to keep the pantry stocked. (One request please: no Passover foods or matzah.) I worked with a group of dedicated congregants to re-open our synagogue library. As a result, we now have a model Jewish library that is also available for small meetings, such as our Jewish Book Club. I serve as volunteer librarian and encourage you to come in and take a look at, and even read, the amazing collection our synagogue owns. I can be found there on Tuesday mornings or on Wednesday afternoons. Some new library events are being planned, so please look for further information. There is so much to do at NSJC. Come, join us as a volunteer. You will be rewarded with good feelings and great friends.

Yellow Candle Design Contest for teens 13 - 18

The Yellow Candle™ was created in 1981 by the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, the umbrella organization of our NSJC Men’s Club, to keep alive the memory of the Six Million who perished in the Shoah. The Candle is modeled after a traditional Jewish memorial yahrzeit candle. The candle’s yellow wax serves to remind us of the yellow arm band which Jews were forced to wear during the Nazi regime. Because our Men’s Club participates in this program, any of our young congregants, ages 13-18, may enter the contest to have their artwork appear on thousands of candles distributed throughout the world. This is an opportunity for your child to exhibit their talent and feelings about the Holocaust. Yellow Candle Design Contest Rules 1. Contest is open to those between the ages 13-18. 2. All entries must be received by the Yellow Candle Committee no later than Friday, May 1, 2015. 3. All entries must be 4 x 11 inches in size. 4. Artwork must be at least 600 DPI, in High Resolution PDF or jpeg. 5. Entry forms must be signed by entrant and entrant’s parents, scanned and emailed to info@yellow candle.org. 6. Go to http://fjmc.org/content/yc_contest to download form. 7

Iris & Jeff Heller Iris and I were both born in Brooklyn. I was born in Crown Heights, living in a building that was also home to my grandparents and my aunt, and was also the same building in which my mother grew up. When I was seven we moved to Flushing, Queens, where I lived until Iris and I married in 1988. Iris lived in the Flatbush section. Her father worked as an accountant, commuting to Great Neck. When Iris was 13, her family moved to Great Neck. In 1967 my family moved to Queens, along with my grandfather and aunt, who lived one floor down. Family was important to us and there was rarely a Sunday when we weren’t together for some occasion. Iris always spent time with her Grandma Bea, one of the most special people I have ever known. I believe Iris inherited Grandma’s warmth and love for other people. Iris graduated from Nassau Community College and took a job at Publishers Clearing House in Port Washington. After graduating from Queens College, I worked for a mail order clothing company. I went back to school to study computers and changed jobs for a more promising opportunity at Publishers Clearing House. Iris was my senior boss’ secretary. She and I would eat lunch together every day with

a group of fellow employees, and we would occasionally chat. She was easy to talk to and we became friends. A mutual friend of ours said to me, “Why don’t you ask her out? She’s a nice Jewish girl, and she comes from Great Neck!” Eventually I did. Iris comes from a small family: she has one sister and no aunts, uncles or cousins with whom her family was close. She marveled at the stories I would tell of my huge, extended family. After dating for about a month, I introduced her to them for the first time at our family Chanukah party. It was a small crowd of about 50, and instead of being completely overwhelmed, she loved it and they loved her! When my dad met her family there was an instant connection, as Iris’ grandmother recognized my father from their early years on the Lower East Side. I was almost finished with my MBA degree from Adelphi when my brother asked me to join his optical business and open a new store in Patchogue. The idea of owning my own business and being my own boss was exciting, so I left Publishers Clearing House and went into the optical business. This led Iris and I to Suffolk County in 1988, to the wonderful friends we have been blessed to have, and to an incredibly warm and special place called North Shore Jewish Center. The members at NSJC were so welcoming. We immediately became involved in synagogue activities and we knew that this would become our home away from home. Iris soon joined

Sisterhood and I, Men’s Club. She learned about Jewish living from her new friends, from holiday customs to kosher cooking. We went on to join the Boards of each organization, with Iris eventually becoming Sisterhood President. She can proudly say that she has held almost every Board position available in Sisterhood, from organizing Sederai to Membership Chair, and currently you will find her working in the Judaica Shop on Sunday mornings. I chaired the Catering Committee that brought in an exclusive caterer. I also was on the NSJC ReImagine advisory panel, that led to the development of some of our wonderful family education programs. Currently, I own an optical store in Freeport with my brother, Paul, and Iris works as a secretary in the Comsewogue School District administrative offices. In 1992, we were blessed with the arrival of our son, Matthew, and in 1995, Jared. Both of our children attended Nursery School, Hebrew School and Hebrew High here at NSJC. We are humbled that we have been given this honor. We wish a hearty mazal tov to Seth & Stacey Persky, and Ron Collace and Anthony DeTurris. We are privileged to be celebrating with them, surrounded by lifelong friends, family and all of NSJC. May we all go l’dor va’dor, from generation to generation, celebrating wonderful events together within this beautifully warm and engaging synagogue!

When she was 16, Stacey spent six but reconnected in 1996 and married in 1998. weeks in Israel on a JFTY tour. Her parents The couple initially settled in Stamford, were active in Men’s Club and Sisterhood; Connecticut, and then moved to Bayside, her dad was their Hebrew School Principal Queens. Stacey received her MBA from and Youth Director. Stacey studied optical NYU Stern School of Business and Seth engineering at the University of Rochester, completed his residency at Yale New Haven where she was a resident assistant, played Hospital, followed by a gastroenterology soccer and belonged to Hillel. (She fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center. successfully chaired Hillel’s annual phone- In 2001, Seth joined Long Island Digestive a-thon fundraiser, leading to a scholarship Disease Consultants as a gastroenterologist and the Perskys moved to Setauket. For the for a winter-break trip to Israel!) Seth’s family was active in Temple past nine years, Stacey has worked at VTS Israel in Great Neck, where he became a Medical Systems, where she is a Project Bar Mitzvah. His maternal grandparents Manager for Audio Visual Integration of were an important part of his early life, Operating Rooms. Upon settling in Setauket, the Perskys especially his grandfather, who would try Ronald J. Colace

joined NSJC. They immediately became involved with Chaverim (our young couples club) and hosted the group’s first house party. They shared that their closest friends in the community are those whom they met through NSJC. Stacey joined in Sisterhood activities: chairing the Basket Dinner, serving as Fundraising VP and as President. She is currently Program Chair, responsible for the varied and entertaining activities at monthly meetings. The Perskys were excited to have co-chaired NSJC’s Gatsby Casino Night this year. The success of this first-time event reflected the tremendous amount of time and effort put forth by Stacey and Seth. The couple have two children, Morgan, who provided one of their proudest moments when she became a Bat Mitzvah last year, and Adam, whose Bar Mitzvah they look forward to in 2018. Seth observed that the high level of involvement and the pride that members of the synagogue have in NSJC continually amazes him. The Perskys extend a mazal tov to fellow honorees, Iris & Jeff Heller and Ron Collace and Anthony DeTurris, as well as a special thank you to the Honoree Celebration co-chairs, Mona Goldstein and Carole Korowitz, and the committee members for their support. The Nativ College Leadership Program is proud to announce the launching of a new track on Nativ called Yozma. Yozma will be an inclusion track for Jewish young adults, ages 18-21, with mild cognitive and social challenges who are college-bound. This program is dedicated to furthering the development of life and leadership skills that are essential for young adults with cognitive and social challenges to lead independent, meaningful Jewish lives and successfully transition to a college program. The inaugural Yozma track will begin in September 2015; applications for Yozma (and for Nativ itself!) are now being accepted. Visit nativ.org. for more information.
