Introduction to department: The department of ENT & Head and Neck Surgery in Yenepoya Medical College Hospital caters to 150 MBBS and 4 MS students every year. It has a 40 bedded unit with facilities for diagnostic ENT services, audiology services, speech therapy, hearing aid fitting, micro ear, micro laryngeal, endoscopic sinus surgery and head and neck onco surgery. 2. Objectives:    

To offer excellent health care for patients with ENT disorders To provide good training in ENT for PG residents To conduct research on basic otolaryngology and sub specialties To promote community health awareness on ENT diseases

Vertigo simplified- CME & VNG Workshop

1. A CME programme on Paediatric Airway was conducted on 19th June 2010. Dr. Deepak Mehta, Assistant Professor in the department of Paediatric otolaryngology at Pittsburgh, US was the guest faculty. HOD of Anaesthesia and HOD of Paediatrics of Yenepoya Medical College were additional guest speakers for inter -departmental coordination.

2. A guest lecture was organized on the topic “Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and surgical approaches to the lateral skull base” by eminent ENT and head and neck surgeon Dr. H. Kishore Chandra Prasad under the special lecture series on 24.04.2013.

3. A live surgical workshop on basic surgeries in ENT was conducted on 7th & 8th June 2013. Dr. Satish jain from Jaipur and Dr. Deepak Haldipur from Bangalore were the guest faculty. A total of 17 cases were demonstrated live in 2 days

4. A CME, Conference and live surgical workshop RADIO ENT Live 2014 on December 12 th and 13th. 2014. The 2 days event aimed at the discussion of radiology issues as related to ENT and live surgical workshop on microscopic ear surgery and endoscopic sinus surgery. 5. A two day CME and Workshop- VERTIGO SIMPLIFIED was held on 28th and 29th November, 2015. This course was designed for all those involved in the care of patients with vestibular disorders including Otologists, Neurologists, Neuro-Ophthalmologists, Audiologists and Primary care Physicians. The program included lectures and video demonstrations and Hands-on training in various laboratory manoeuvres used for the diagnosis and management of vertigo including Videonystagmography. Dr. D.R. Srinivas, Dr. Naveen K, Dr. Suryaprakash D.R. from Bangalore and Dr. M.V. Francis from Alleppey were the guest faculty for the program. The programme saw over 150 registrations. The CME was awarded 4 credit points.a total of 8 lectures and 4 hands on demonstration ,including demonstration of Videonystagmography was done.

8. Extension activities: Health camps are conducted on a regular basis at the peripheral centers and rural places wherein the faculty of the rank of senior resident or assistant professor, PG resident and house surgeons participate actively. They are posted on rotation for these camps. In addition to that necessary treatment, health education is also given in these camps. Patients requiring further care and surgical treatment are brought subsequently to the medical college hospital and are offered free treatment. The faculty participating in the camps will identify patients required to be referred to the medical college hospital for further management. The postgraduate students and the interns will manage the general case load in these kinds of camps and are allowed to perform supervised surgical procedures on such patients when they are seen in the medical college hospital. Total Number of camps conducted in last 3 years: 98 Health education is also given by faculty on the local FM radio/AIR. Subject awareness talks were given by the HOD & the faculty for the local family physicians so as to increase their awareness regarding the specialty and to get more referral cases for the department.

9. Any other highlights of the department: 1. E-Learning- Theory classes taken for under graduates are uploaded online on the yengage repository. Students are encouraged to take part in the online forum activities and discuss with the teachers. Regular online MCQ test are being conducted in the ELearning centre.

2. HIS- Hospital Information System- Details regarding both in patient and out patients is being uploaded in the HIS-Backbone for easy follow up and retrieval of information.
