School Improvement Plan This is our School Improvement Plan for 2016 - 2017. It incorporates our school values and promotes independent learning enabling children to ‘imagine with all their mind, believe with all their heart and achieve with all their might’. This has been shared with children across the school and the areas outlined on the poster will be focused on throughout the academic year in all areas of the curriculum and across all of the half term themes.

Attendance Churchtown Primary School believes that all pupils benefit from the education we provide, and therefore from regular school attendance. Churchtown Primary School aims to work with parents to ensure that all pupils attend school regularly and on time. Helping to promote a pattern of regular attendance is everybody’s responsibility: parents, pupils and all members of school staff. Parents/carers have a legal duty to ensure that children of compulsory school age attend on a regular and full-time basis. Parents/carers will: • Ensure their child is on the playground by 8.45am each day. • Ensure that their child is collected or goes home alone promptly at the end of school. • Contact school early on the first morning by 8.30am of absence by phone, email or in person. • Arrange dental, doctor or hospital appointments outside the school day except in an emergency. • Only ask for leave of absence for their child in exceptional circumstances. • Requests need to be made for any leave of absence via Mrs Jackson in the office at least four weeks before the required time and prior to making any booking. A meeting will be made with Mrs Healy (Assistant Headteacher) if required.

Morning Arrival At Churchtown Primary School, we want to ensure that children have a smooth start to every day, entering the school in a calm manner, ready to learn. To ensure this, the external school doors open from 8.40am for children to walk into their classrooms ready for an 8.50am start. Once in the classroom, children are expected to read a book quietly. Members of the Senior Management Team, including the Headteachers, Assistant Head teachers, Phase Leaders and Lead Learning Mentor, will be on the school gates and playground each morning. Teachers are also on duty in corridors to supervise the children entering the school buildings. External gates close at 8.55am. Children arriving after this time should be brought into school via the main office. Class teachers show their classes out at the end of the day, so you will have an opportunity to see the teacher if required. If you need to inform your class teacher of anything in the mornings, please do this via the school office.

In Year 1 we ... Year 1 is an important year for the children as they transition from the Early Years environment into Key Stage 1. Their mathematical and English skills will continue to be developed and we endeavour to provide the children with a broad and balanced curriculum including topics such as ‘Over The Rainbow’. Letters and Sounds phonic work continues throughout the year and the children will learn spelling patterns relating to this. We provide a range of practical activities and experiences that enhance the curriculum and motivate the children. Where possible, we will utilise the local area - including trips and visits to local shops and the Botanic Gardens. The children will be given homework on a Thursday to be returned to school by the following Tuesday. Spellings patterns are sent home for children to learn. We encourage the children to read at home daily and appreciate your support in this matter.

Homework Homework is an important part of a child's education, and can add much to a child's development. We see homework as an important example of cooperation between teachers and parents/carers. One of the aims of our teaching is for children to develop as independent learners, and we believe that doing homework is one of the ways in which children can acquire the skill of independent learning. Homework allows for parents and children to work together on the homework, sharing with the adults the work we are doing in school and developing communication around the children's topic.

School Dinners

All of the children within Key Stage 1 are now entitled to free school dinners as part of the new government initiative. If your child has any specific dietary requirements - i.e. food allergies, religious requirements, vegetarian, etc please feel free to speak to the class teacher and we will try to accommodate most individuals’ needs. At Churchtown Primary School, all of our dinners are catered for in house. This ensures that we are able to provide our children with healthier, better quality food. Children have the option of a hot meal, with a vegetarian option, or are able to choose from the deli counter consisting of fresh salads, sandwich fillings and accompaniments. All school meals consist of a main meal, dessert and a drink and options are rotated on a 3 weekly basis. The mets are changed each half term to give the children a wider variety of food choices. During the day the children within Key Stage 1 are offered a healthy snack - consisting of fresh fruit or vegetables - including carrots, apples, satsumas, bananas, raisins, tomatoes, etc. In line with our healthy schools policy, we do not allow children to bring in chocolate bars or crisps at playtime.

Valuables in School Valuable watches should not be worn in School. Any watch worn should be marked with the child's name. Children who have pierced ears should wear small gold or silver studs for their own protection. Watches and studs should be removed for all games, P.E, dance and movement or parents may provide plaster to cover the earrings. If your child can remove them they should not be worn on the days when these activities are taking place. Any other jewellery is strictly forbidden. •

Children should not bring toys into School without the Class Teacher's permission.



Children are allowed to bring in books, skipping ropes, loom bands to make (BUT NOT TO WEAR), and collectable cards e.g. Moshies (the children are not allowed to swap or sell them).



Mobile Phones are not allowed in school in Year 2.

Communication with Parents Regular communication with parents is sent via newsletters and meetings on a formal or informal basis. Year group specific newsletters are produced half termly and provide key information about everything going on and what is coming up next half term. You will receive text and email alerts to keep you updated and up to date information regarding year group and school news can be found on the website:

http://www.churchtown.org.uk/ Please don’t forget to keep school up to date with addresses, contact numbers and e-mail addresses as this ensures good communication with you and are required in case of emergency. We have opportunities to meet with parents regularly during the school year. In the Autumn and Spring Terms, you will have the opportunity to meet with teachers individually at the Parent Evening sessions. Time is limited to ten minutes per session, and if further time is required a follow up meeting should be arranged. It is not always convenient for a teacher to speak to parents when children are lining up of a morning. If you require a meeting with the Class Teacher, this can be arranged by contacting the office and making an appointment. Any important messages can also be conveyed via your child’s Reading Diary.

Medical Information It is essential for your child’s wellbeing that school is aware of all medical requirements including allergies. If your child has an inhaler or any other medication please ensure we are informed. School staff are not allowed to administer medicines prescribed for short term illnesses. If your child requires a medicine to be administered 3 times a day, a parent will be required to visit school during lunchtime to administer the midday dose.

Summer Uniform Girls - In the summer girls may wear yellow and white cotton check dresses with navy pullover or

cardigan. Short-sleeved yellow polo shirts with the school logo may also be worn. White socks should be worn in the summer. Boys - In the summer short-sleeved yellow polo shirts with the school logo may be worn.

If there are any difficulties obtaining the correct footwear, the children will be expected to change in to their pumps during the school day.

PE Kit - All children should have; a white t-shirt, dark blue shorts, a pair of black pumps kept in a named

draw string bag in school.

Field Kit - Children having games outside should wear appropriate kit which

consists of: a navy or black tracksuit, white t-shirt & trainers. FOOTBALL KITS ARE NOT PERMITTED.

Hair - All hair, longer than collar length, should be tied up, regardless of gender.

Hair decoration should be kept simple and should be yellow or navy blue. !

In the summer term of 2016 in consultation with staff we drew up a Behaviour Charter for Churchtown children which sets out our high expectations for all children. This charter is linked to our vision and our values and is broken down into sections. This document is based upon what we would expect/want to see in and around our school.
