Worship Survey Responses  For Online Review  Total Responses  60 (some did not answer all of the questions)  31 from green sheets (paper surveys)  29 from online  Each bullet (•) divides comments and the numbers within Parentheses () give the number of similar responses  Information  May 19, 2013, (color black)  May 26, 2013, (color red)  June 2, 2013 (color green)  Notes    All responses have been reviewed by the Expression of Faith through Worship Team and duly noted as input.   For this online, public version, certain specific comments have been withheld.  If you have questions about this, please  contact a minister, or Suzanne Coyle, Expression of Faith through Worship Team Chair for further clarification.    1.  How do you experience the Spirit of God moving among us in worship?   (3) Through music, message & interaction.    (3) Prayers and (6) sermon.    I don’t know but I do.    Well thought out worship themes that flow well.  Prayers that challenges.  Sermons that inspire.    In the upbeat music and children’s participation.    On occasion.    Most of the songs.    Quiet times.   The music‐all types! Variety! Personal testimonies/stories, (2) time to greet each other, main things is self‐ preparation for this!    Hymns, anthems (not praise team ones).    Through learning from the pastor’s message.    Sharing, children and youth participation.    I am not sure it does.  Trying to accommodate the older style of worship and the newer style is not working.  It  would be better to pick one style and go with it.    It can vary from Sunday to Sunday.  Music is a big component of that.  I’m a big fan of the traditional hymns.  I  like some of the new songs and can get into them.  What I don’t like about the new songs is signing the chorus  over and over again at the end of the song.  Whether its Fred or Evan, I get something out of the sermon every  week. That gives us a chance to get to know one another better and show our hospitality to guests.    I experience it in the faces of worshipers, scripture and most of the music.     Through the singing of the contemporary music, the other doesn’t touch me in the same way.    Quiet reflective, thoughtful time in all segments of worship.    The choir singing and the sermon.    The choir and organ help the most.  Also the good sermons.    Evan’s sermon and the music, especially the children’s portion.    I don’t see a question on this survey that allows me to say what I have to say, so I’ll just do it here.  Sadly, even  with the best of intentions, I have been unable to come to any of the new services because of the time change.   1

My mother is elderly and has severe arthritis.  It was a challenge to get her to the 11AM service, but we were  usually able to do that.  10AM is simply too early for her.  If I were on my own, it would not matter so much, but  I am the sole care‐giver (except when I’m at work).  Regretfully, we have been looking at other churches.  Through prayers, scripture, (2) music, sermons, children’s moments, reflective moments.  With the children joining us in service.  I feel many moments of the spirit moving among us.  For the most part the service this morning was not a service to God.  What happened to singing a hymn in praise  to our country?  Seeking unity of generations, music styles, and cultures is a God‐thing.  (2) Music, sermon.  When we recite the Lord’s Prayer.  The children’s message.  When the Karen share a song.  Informal greeting at beginning of service.  Some of the music, especially the organ.  Hymns and some praise  songs move me also.  Choir.  The variety and multi‐cultural elements (of the service) reflect God’s Kingdom.  Don’t much, a lot of blank faces…nice to meet and greet with a smile though.  The fire or the Holy Spirit in me has been refueled in great amount.  Through music, prayer, listening to the sermon.  Since January I have lost that feeling for most Sundays.  When I sing with the choir anthem I usually feel a sense  of God speaking through us.  Mostly thru sermons, child sessions, and others sharing their faith.  This is supplemented by music.  Through the scripture and message.  ???  Friendship moments at beginning, silence/awe struck moments. i.e. insight from sermon, song lyrics, person  sharing their story/talent, etc.  Through learning from the pastor’s message.  I love the single service‐when I can see how God has blessed our congregation with wonderful diversity‐I see  God at work there.  Not much.  Enjoy the variety of the service and how each brings us together‐everybody has an opportunity to contribute to  the worship experience.  Forward with our Associate Pastor.  ?  Through the sermon, scripture and music.  I do not feel the combined service has been a positive.  Much prefer traditional 11AM & Contemporary 9.30AM.  Choir Anthem, Sermon.  Enthusiastic singing.  Familiar hymns, anthems, and meaningful choruses.  Sharing life stories and congregation  participation.  The change allowed everyone to see God in a different way.  Through the sermons, music, sharing, children & youth participation.  I think the place at the beginning of the service where there is an opportunity to greet each other is very  positive.  I feel the spirit is moving well among us.  Through contemporary music and gathering with others.  Enthusiasm of praise.

Proclaiming the Word of God and people responding to the Holy Spirits moving by uniting with FBC or placing  their faith in Christ.  Fellowship and Worship SUGGESTIONS. 1) Include Lord’s Prayer in Service 2) Reduce @ of Gathering Type of  Songs.  Being sung 2 at a time.  3) Announce Call to Invitation in addition to being printed in weekly bulletin.  Through the diversity of origins, backgrounds and lifestyles all participating as one to glorify God both during  worship services and throughout our lives. 

  2.  What elements of the worship service help your faith come alive?   Upbeat, energetic music…whether it is traditional songs or modern ones.    (5) Prayer and (4) music.    (2) All music, scripture, dance, times of quiet, children’s time.    The celebration of God’s love and multi‐cultural experiences.    (3) Sermon.    I can feel God’s spirit.  Every “race” man, women are rated equally.    The beautiful music‐choir.    Children, (2) diversity of race and cultures.     Message and community.    Quiet meditation time (of which there is none) and hymns with the organ.    (2) Through the message.    Witness to God among us, seeing all ages participate.    Music, the “new” Popular songs.    The multicultural aspects help me realize how much bigger God’s world is than just the corner of 86th and  College.  It’s a constant reminder that God is working in the lives of people just like us all around the world.  That  is encouraging.       Words of hymns, special music, the blessing, children’s time‐there is very little that happens that doesn’t bring  new life to my faith experience, every Sunday.      Also when some more contemporary elements are added.  Such as, Mr. Potato Head, the dancers and the  worship band.    Singing old hymns, as well as more contemporary ones, but singing the same refrain over and over again is not  meaningful.  Hearing the children sign as well as our wonderful adult choir sing inspires my faith to come alive.    The music of the choir.    As above (the choir and organ help the most.  Also good sermons).    Same as above (Evan’s sermons and the music, especially the children’s portion).    Prayer reflections‐naming pastoral care concerns, beauty of music.   Singing, fellowship.   Rev. Bever time with the children was a good time.  The choir did a great job.   Scripture (need 2 or 3 readings most weeks), sermon, (Many weeks the different elements are not well‐blended.   Too much attention to tastes and not enough seeking to use the best tools for that week).   Organ.   Sermon.   Informal greeting at beginning of service.  Some of the music, especially the organ.  Hymns and some praise  songs move me also.  Choir.   All of it.   Media, film, video, visual elements, dynamic speaking, contemporary/accessible worship music  3

(2) Music, FBC choir, sermon.  Choir, music, the method of teaching children while they are still very young and above all else the hospitality  and humbleness of these great people.  Music, prayer and sermon.  Singing songs that I know.  Thoughtful prayers and sermons.  When I sing with the choir anthem I usually feel a  sense of God speaking through us.  I like a variety of music and the diversity of backgrounds attending the service.  Communion and time for prayer  are special.  I think we all need to do a better job of preparing ourselves for worship.  We have a responsibility  too, not just those conducting the worship.  I’d like to hear a sermon on this topic.  Prayer and the message.  ORGAN. Prelude, Postlude, Accompaniment of Hymns/Choir.  Through the music, through the message, through prayer.  I enjoy almost all elements‐all kinds of music‐audience participation‐corporal worship‐verbal prayer (silent  prayer‐great sermons.  The reading of Scriptures, preaching, songs which challenge me to serve others.  Music, children moment, message, visuals.  Evan’s sermons, choir, familiar hymns, affirmations of faith together.  Singing, hymns of our faith, prayer.  People around me don’t sing the praise songs it all comes from the choir  Music that is meaningful such as traditional, time tested great hymns.  I want to hear our wonderful organ more  and classical music on instruments such as flute, violin, brass and harp.  Through the music, not through Praise band.  Music and testimonies of other members is often very challenging.  Seeing the children participate is singing and  the children’s story time!!!  Praise and worship and the Sunday school.  The message, prayer, witness to God among us.  Seeing all ages participate.  Reading/thinking about the scripture & prayer‐although miss saying the Lord’s Prayer‐I think God might be  disappointed that we don’t seem to do this consistently now.  Song, preaching.  Contemporary music or upbeat contemporary style hymns, worship banners, musical instruments.    Inspirational sermons.  God’s Word and some gospel music.  Music and spirituality. 

  3.  How are you challenged and/or strengthened through worship?   (2) Sermon and scripture.    Again I don’t know how but I feel‐the strength.    The sermons are not “soft balls” that are predictable‐God’s spirit challenges through both Pastors.  PTL.    Through a sermon that gives me a mission.    Encouraged.    Gives more hope and faith to deal with a hard life.   “Contemporary” music. The noise factor is overwhelming and painful!   Message (does it both).     The pastor’s message often helps me think how I can better live and love.

Usually the sermon challenges me and strengthens me.  When I hear how God is working in our lives.  I enjoy  seeing pictures of our members serving on the video monitors.   Sometimes thru the sermon but only when the message is applied to everyday life.   Ultimately our challenges and strength come from God and the Word of God.  I know of some churches that  have been challenged as a community to read through the Bible together over the course of a year.  Every  Sunday’s sermon comes from what was read by everyone during that week.  Other churches have challenged  people to give up TV or some other secular behavior for certain periods of time.  I’d like to see our congregation  come together on something like that that will strengthen us individually and as a group.   Mostly through the sermons by whoever is preaching, sometimes through prayers, often through the words of  hymns and anthems.  I find the blessing to be challenging and strengthening.   Strengthened‐through the music and scripture and challenged through some of the themes we’ve experienced.   Thoughtful sermons.   I have a difficult time accepting the “new” hymns.  They are too long, unfamiliar, and difficult for the elderly to  stand for such a long time.  As above (the choir and organ help the most.  Also the good sermons).  I am challenged to try and understand the thoughts of others about our new format.   By Pastors’ challenges and insights.  By my active participation with the worship elements.  The banners are beautiful and add something to the service.  When depth of life is touched.  When the choir shares a message through song.  Scripture‐I would prefer that it be printed in bulletin, though.  Biblical based message.  Sermon.  When the worship is primarily traditional, & contemporary elements are missing‐I walk away challenged.  Keeps me in contact with God…no challenge.  My faith in the Lord has never changed so far.  My way of life (flesh desire) is always being strengthened through  seeing volunteers who are praising God with beautiful choirs.  Sermons, different music and viewpoints than mine.  Sermons that make me think inclusive language for God and humanity is used Reminders are given that I need to  live my Christianity on a daily basis.  MUSIC.  By not doing everything the same.  I like different forms of worship and music and hearing different people give  sermons.  Recent pastor from South Africa was awesome! I like when messages make me think about possible  new ways of thinking.  Slightly.  Sermons.  Monologue/Dialogue Meaningful videos.  The pastor’s message often helps me think how I can better live and love.  I’m renewed each week‐grounded.  Through some of the hymns the sermons, prayers, responsive readings.  I love the combination of contemporary music and hymns as it blends generations together.  Keep it up!  Thanks  for establishing the bible study group after church service.  Our choir is excellent.  Evan’s sermons.  I am not strengthened in our worship service.  It is Entertainment.

I am challenged when I see members of the praise team dressed in shorts and shirts hanging out.  No respect for  God.  We don’t need T & A in our worship.  The other challenge is trying to sing the praise music.  Why can’t we  have the music?  (Maybe in a supplemental hymn book).  Many times I can’t participate because I don’t know  the music.  Challenged to be tolerant.  Coming together as a Church Family in community fellowship with one another.  Challenged to help the church grow and grow spiritually.  Usually the sermon challenges me and strengthens me.  When I hear how God is working in our lives.  I enjoy  seeing pictures of our members serving on the video monitors.  I’m challenged by the combined contemporary & traditional worship‐primarily the music.  I think it would be  easier if the music for each was better selected.  There is some contemporary music that is just not well written  and that should be eliminated by the music leadership.  Likewise, there are some traditional hymns that “drag”  along and those are distracting was well.  I think the congregation as a whole would be more accepting of the  combined service if the music could be favorites of both styles.  To do this would suggest a survey of the  congregations regarding music preferences.  I have come to learn to accept the new and the unknown.  Working together has been a challenge especially  having gotten used to the contemporary.  Having integrated the new and the older music was a challenge but it  has also strengthened my faith in that in both the old and the new, God is found.  It is challenging to sing some old hymns, sometimes, that have no personal meaning.  Ritualistic activities that  have no meaning to someone not raised in a church.  Currently, not very much.  Challenged by too many “Gathering” type songs sung in a row.  Strengthened by excellent ministers and their  messages! 

  4.  In what ways does worship invite your participation?   (4)Through music.  I miss having an occasional responsive reading and I especially miss the Lord’s Prayer.    Youth ministry gives us hope for the future.    Greeting each other, offering.    Worship is a participation sport I don’t understand how to not participate.    The well developed themes draw me in to a willingness to participate.    Need to work on this.    It doesn’t.    Greeting each other, songs on the screens, bible.    Several ways‐but songs on the screen I don’t know.  Can you put music with the words, repeats, etc?    I prefer to be a person of worship not just an “audience” member to exalt and congratulate performers.    Hymns, communion, greeting each other and holy space (being in it).    Hymns, the Lord’s Prayer (where did it go?).    Through singing the music, through active listening, through helping with the service.     Opportunities to serve at end of service, when we are asked to participate during worship.     The songs, prayers, everything in the service can invite a person’s participation.  It’s up to the person and their  mood/attitude on that particular day.  I do think that having all of the songs and scriptures on the video screens  in some ways invites less participation.  A person is more engaged and more invested if they have to open up  the hymnal or open up the Bible to follow along.    I engage with the one giving the sermon, the bidding prayers are engaging, singing, the greeting time.     6

Different communions, thought cards like we had at the beginning.   Singing, listening to the scriptures and sermon, prayer.   Through the singing of FAMILIAR hymns.   The hymns, yes.  Other than joining in singing, I see very little invitation to join in the service.   Through prayerful reflection/public prayers, singing.  Music, prayer, contemplation.  (Services with exclusive male images of God make participation difficult).  Singing, listening, contributing. self & financially.  Self‐searching.  (2) Music.  The active (not passive) elements of the service (contemporary elements) draw my participation.  Hmmm…we pray together sometimes, sing together…and are invited to help with outreach.  I prefer my own language worship services the most.  I came here to learn English language and many other  things you are doing.  The pastor’s speech is faster than the young minister’s and so I find it quite difficult to  catch up with the topic he touches with.  I always try to interpret the sermons silently in my heart.  When I am invited to greet others and am greeted by others.  When I have the words and melodies of songs that  are sung by the congregation on a daily basis.  Singing.  Good question.  My initial response is “not enough”.  Would like more opportunities for those in the  congregation to share their stories, much like Jane Seigel recently did about her experience in Boston.  Prayer, music, the message.  Hymns, prayers, litanies, Lord’s Supper, Baptism, Offering, Hymn of Discipleship, maroon pad, tear off flap,  opportunities for ministry, “Amen”‐affirming belief in God’s presence.  Through singing the music, through active listening, through helping with the service.  Reminders to be present are helpful‐when I’m present and not distracted‐I fully participate.  I participate because I am a part of God’s family.  Prayer, songs, member introduction makes you feel closer to each other.  Less contemporary music.  It doesn’t!  God has left the sanctuary!  I have been Baptist for many years.  If I don’t go to this Baptist church I  won’t go anywhere. I hate this service.  For now I am just trying to tolerate this service.  The only positive is that  we are all together.  It doesn’t.  The drum style is irritating. It’s like a rock concert not a worship service.  The music, messages from the scriptures to glean how it affects my life, often challenging!?  Sunday school.  Through music, opportunities to serve at end of service, when we are asked to participate during worship  I’m blessed to be a part of the music ministry.  However, we are going to really be moving in the direction of  “combined” or contemporary worship, it seems that others should have increased opportunity for participation.   If we are going to think outside of the box for music, why not other aspects of worship?  For example, does  there have to be a sermon every Sunday?  Could various members of the congregation be invited to share their  life experiences and/or Biblical passages as applied to those experiences?  Singing.  Singing, reading, and greeting others.  Currently, not very much.  Having been a member of the Chapel Service, I enjoy seeing everyone in 1 place! Call to worship greeting.

5.  In what ways does worship equip us to be the church in service to the world?   The message equips us individually, but the church does not offer many opportunities to apply this through  actions of service/volunteerism/mission.    Leaves us to go forth and treat others as we would want to be treated.    Worship offers a safe place to experience the body of Christ.    Living out our faith…opportunities to serve…food pantry, ESL childcare, Mission Trip, mentioning the specific  Nora community re‐enforces our local mission field…while still reaching out nationally‐internationally.    Currently unknown.    When it enthused, inspires, and empowers us to be God’s people in the world.    This church is providing a healthy ministry for members and visitors to go out into the world (rare to find a  “Baptist” church with a healthy view of Jesus/God.    By giving and receiving friendship to those who believe and love God.  “Your are known by the company you  keep.”    Tolerance, discovery, understanding, loyalty, “laying aside this privilege” in powered, not to speak but to listen,  to understand rather than criticize.    Recharge us, reminds us what to do in our world, teaches (we learn), gratitude (spread it), thankfulness (in all  things).  How can we help each other to prepare ourselves for worship?    Sermons and a renewal of my spirit, apparently you only want positive feedback as none of your questions  relate to any negative worship experience.  I’ll give you one anyway.  I don’t want nor need a church camp type  worship experience every Sunday!    Through helping us to think more about how we can most effectively use our lives to love those around us and  use ourselves for what we’re best equipped to do.    Hearing each Sunday about God’s presence in our lives, about how we are loved and challenged to love others.   Being aware of God’s presence and hearing about God’s power to transform us into the people we were created  to be.   Allowing people to understand the needs of others.    When we leave worship filled or renewed, we take that energy with us during the week.  How that happens can  vary from week to week depending on what we experienced and how we felt moved...    It strengthens me to serve as I believe I have been called.    it reminds me to be “other‐looking”, outward looking to the needs of others, it reminds me of God’s promises to  give me the resources I need to serve, it helps me see the world through God’s eyes, being in fellowship with  sisters and brothers in Christ strengthens me and helps me be faithful to my calling.    I’m not sure we’re quite there yet.   By strengthening our faith and making us mindful that everything we have belongs to God and we are put on  earth to do what we can for the people of the world.    It should help us to see that we are one person working to help one another.  The food bank, the new families  from other cultures assist us to be a world church family.    Through the sermons.    It SHOULD bring us all together as one to understand the needs of others outside our comfort zone.    Hearing the call of Christ to respond in loving ways to others‐Being reminded that grace has been extended to  me‐That we have the example of our Lord to be “about” our Father’s business‐Sharing our journeys with one  another in community, giving support and care to others‐   When deep compassions is touched.  When reminders of need that can go met.  When energy for living is  engaged.  8

Complete service, I want more organ music at end.  To be tolerant of the repetitive spirit songs.  Sometimes they have a beautiful message.  To remember they are  serving someone.  Please, please remove the stools from the stage.  They can go up on the stage to sing.  How  can we justify two ministers for one service?  It appears we are so busy trying to bring in new members we are  forgetting the needs of our members.  Losing adult SS Members.    Given a Godly base.  Could use more examples, challenges  I like the new service format, esp. the variety in music.  We previously attended the Gathering and LOVE their  music.  However, it turns out the choir and hand bells are fabulous as well.  I like seeing the entire congregation  as well.  Kudos the organizing teams.    The accepting and non‐judgmental environment the church fosters, encourages me to go out and be accepting,  loving, embracing people around me‐no matter where they are in their walk.  Strengthen bonds and determination toward ministry  By our deeds.  The American Church has already been doing this for centuries.  We, many Asians are not  equipped with the armors of God but rather want to get themselves equipped with materials better.  A minister  who is equipped with a big financial body but not with the armors of God is nothing but just an annoying  cymbal.  Teaches us about God and what he would want us to do to help others. gives us the “spiritual food” we need  We hear the word of God read and interpreted.  We are challenged to go out and be the hands and feet of Christ  to others.  We are strengthened by the songs and prayers that we experience in the church community.  We are  reminded of the many needs in the local community and the world and that God loves all people.  The questions are so random that I cannot answer them in a precise manner.  Sorry.  I like coming to church and  I love the people, no matter how we worship, it is about community, not form.  By making us realize it’s not about me.  It’s about how to serve others and everyone has a gift to serve in some  way.  By having services that reflect the various backgrounds of those attending.  I particularly like learning more  about different cultures.  Our increased diversity presents all sorts of opportunities.  By drawing correlations from God’s word to our everyday lives.  I also think we should say the Lord’s Prayer  more often.  Education, Inspiration, Fellowship, Focus on our Call and Mission.  Comment. I, personally, have a negative  reaction to applause during Worship‐(except when the leader asks for it to welcome or recognize achievement).   When one of us (or a group of us) sings, speaks dances, shares in anyway‐we do it “IN WORSHIP”‐to God’s  Glory!‐NOT as a performance to be applauded.  God is a recipient. we are all participants in what one or a group  is offering for all of us TO God’s Glory.  Therefore, WHO are we applauding?  Through helping us to think more about how we can most effectively use our lives to love those around us and  use ourselves for what we’re best equipped to do.  Reminds us we are here to worship and serve God binds us together for that purpose.  Our present worship services‐not much.  The songs (many) have shallow theology, tunes are difficult and do not  promote unity, too much “me” not Body of Christ oriented.  Introduction of immigrant (Burmese) music and prayers helps me appreciate their devotion and of the many  ways people can worship God.  It should be a safe place to be.  It should help us recharge from the wear and tear of the world.  It should build  us up‐not tear us down and we shouldn’t be angry and upset every time we go.  Through the sermon.  The scriptures, by way of the messenger, challenge us to love our neighbor as ourselves!!  Through all the outreach programs  9

Hearing each Sunday about God’s presence in our lives.  About how we are loved and challenged to love others.   Being aware of God’s presence and hearing about God’s power to transform us into the people we were created  to be.  I’m not sure this is “worship”, but more a function of forming small interest groups each of which focuses on a  particular area of service.  These interest groups would also be a way to help new attendees feel more included  in FBC.  Through mission trips, international relations, I feel the church makes an effort to encompass everyone and  make them feel part of themselves.  By inspirational sermons, supported by music.  Currently, not much.  We do many good works.  We must also be concerned about winning people to Christ.  Worship and Sunday School Encourages to spread the word of God.  Same answer as #1.
