Sunday Early Service

Preparation for Worship Prelude

God Delights in You

Calling every daughter, calling every son, all who’ve been adopted through a sacrifice of love. There’s no need for you to fear, your debts have all been cleared. Calling all the downcast who feel like they’re alone; anyone who’s longing for a family of their own. God’s prepared a place for you. He’s calling you to come and sing, come and dance. The Father’s singing over you. Come rejoice and be glad for God delights in you. Calling all who’ve wandered, gone off on their own, anyone who wonders if they’re welcome back at home. The God of grace makes all things new. He’s calling you to come and sing, come and dance. The Father’s singing over you. Come rejoice and be glad for God delights in you. You chose us to be the objects of your love in spite of all we have done. You gave your beloved Son to die for us to make us daughters and sons. Words by Eric Grover. Music by George Romanacce.

A Call to Worship Call to Worship

Praise the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty. You make springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. You give water to all the beasts of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. You water the mountains from your upper chambers; the earth is satisfied by the fruit of your work. Your trees are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that you planted. How many are your works, O LORD! May your glory endure forever. We will sing to the LORD all our life; we will sing praise to our God as long as we live. May our meditation be pleasing to him, as we rejoice in the LORD. (All) Praise the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD. from Psalm 104.

Invocation The Welcome of God

Worship in Praise This Is My Father’s World

This is my Father’s world, and to my list’ning ears, All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; his hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father’s world, the birds their carols raise, The morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker’s praise. This is my Father’s world: he shines in all that’s fair; In the rustling grass I hear him pass, he speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father’s world, O let me ne’er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet. This is my Father’s world: the battle is not done; Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heav’n be one. This is my Father’s world: the battle is not done; Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heav’n be one.

Worship in Confession & Repentance Prayer of Corporate Confession

O God Most High, Most Glorious The thought of your infinite serenity cheers us, for we are toiling and straining, troubled and distressed, but you are forever at perfect peace. Your designs cause you no fear or care of unfulfillment, they stand fast as the eternal hills. You bring order out of confusion, and our defeats are your victories: We come to you as sinners with cares and sorrows, desiring to leave every concern entirely to you, every sin calling for Christ’s precious redeeming blood. Help us, O Lord, for unbelief mars our confidence, sin makes us forget you. Let us live near to the great Shepherd, Jesus Christ, hear his voice, follow his calls. Keep us from deception by causing us to abide in the Truth, from harm by helping us to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. Grant us to know that we truly live only when we live for you; Your presence alone can make us holy, devout, strong, and happy. Abide in us, gracious God. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen. Adapted from Valley of Vision: “Resting on God”

Silent Confession Assurance of Pardon

Hear the good news of the gospel: Christ Jesus is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Jesus, our high priest, meets our needs, because he is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He has offered the perfect sacrifice for our sins, once and for all, when he offered himself on the cross. We have been made holy through that sacrifice once for all. Thanks be to God. Adapted from Hebrews 7:25-27; 10:10.

Sermon

“The Miracle of Joy”

When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.

Giving of Tithes and Offerings This is Amazing Grace

Who breaks the power of sin and darkness? Whose love is mighty and so much stronger? The King of Glory, the King above all kings. Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder and leaves us breathless in awe and wonder? The King of Glory, the King above all kings. This is amazing grace, this is unfailing love, that you would take my place, that you would bear my cross; you laid down your life that I would be set free. Jesus, I sing for all that you’ve done for me. Who brings our chaos back into order? Who makes the orphan a son and daughter? The King of Glory. Who rules the nations with truth and justice? Shines like the sun in all of its brilliance? The King of Glory, the King above all kings. Worthy is the Lamb who was slain and worthy is the King who conquered the grave. Words and Music by Jeremy Riddle, Josh Farro, and Phil Wickham.?

Excerpts from “AVPC Worship: Questions You’ve Wanted to Ask” Q. What is the purpose of Sharing & Prayer? A. This is an opportunity for people in the congregation to share prayer requests, words of thanksgiving, or ways that God has been speaking to them or working in their lives. Q. Isn’t there always a chance or concern that someone will say something unbiblical or inappropriate? A. That is always a risk, but the Session also believes that it is important to allow members and visitors the opportunity to share freely and openly what God is doing in their lives, so we trust that God’s Holy Spirit will guide and protect in this time. An ordained elder (or someone who is in training to be ordained) is responsible for leading the Sharing & Prayer and we trust that people in the congregation will understand that the words or opinions expressed in this time are not necessarily representative of the words or the opinions of the church leadership. Q. Why don’t we have sharing and prayer every week? A. Simply put, because of time constraints. There is not enough time in every service. If you don’t get a chance to share during the worship services, there are prayer cards available in the pew. There are people who pray weekly for these prayer requests. Q. What is the purpose of the Pastoral Prayer? A. This is an opportunity for the pastor to pray for specific needs in the congregation, but also things that are going on in the community, state, country, or world around us. It is also a time to pray that God’s Spirit will dwell with and speak through the pastor who is preaching. For more questions and answers like this, we encourage you to pick up a free copy of our booklet, “AVPC Worship: Questions You’ve Wanted to Ask” located in the Parlor and Welcome Center.

“The Miracle of Joy” John 2:1-11 June 12, 2016 We’re beginning today a series of sermons on the miracles of Jesus. The first seven of these will be the seven miracles John reports in his Gospel. Of the numerous miracles Jesus performed, John found special significance in these seven. He calls them “signs” because they point to the reality of the kingdom Jesus came to accomplish. The first one is this famous miracle of turning water into wine. On the surface, it seems a strange miracle for John to include, especially to begin with this miracle. Running low on wine at the end of a wedding reception would not be classified by most of us as a world-class tragedy. But when we remember that this is a sign pointing to something, and when we recognize that wine is a common Hebrew symbol for joy, this miracle becomes a precious thing indeed. The coming kingdom is marked by joy, and Jesus is the one who supplies that joy. Let’s trace this theme of joy through the main three points of the story. I.

They Have no Wine.

II.

Jesus Has More than Enough Wine.

III.

Jesus Saves the Best Wine for Last.

SNACK DRIVE FOR URBAN HOPE SUMMER CAMP This summer we would like to provide snacks for Urban Hope’s summer camp where they will be hosting 30-40 middle school youth. Alton and Sandra Hardy were very thankful for all of the snacks we provided for their spring program for young adults seeking their high school diploma. They asked if we could do the same for this summer program that will be meeting the month of June. Look for the collection bins in the Parlor and Welcome Center. Thank you ahead of time for your generosity. We will be collecting through June 19.

PASTOR’S CLASS If you are new to our church or have questions about a sermon or anything related to the Bible or Christianity, consider joining our pastor in the library (room across the hallway from the piano side entrance to the sanctuary) during the Sunday School hour. OUR MISSIONARIES OF THE WEEK are Peter and Janet. They are serving in a sensitive area. They are involved in church planting and coming alongside local believers to strengthen and grow the existing church. Pray for their work in the arts and the business they run as a means to reach out to their local community. THANKS to all who helped make Camp Solid Rock (VBS) a success! We had over 80 attend! Thank you to all of our helpers – whether you helped decorate, served as tribe leaders, or assisted with registration, crafts, snacks, and games – we couldn’t have done it without you! And a special thanks goes to our favorite Camp Solid Rock director, Betty Carter!
