The Marathon in Barcelona happens in one of the most elegant sites of the city. This is the best time of the year to visit Barcelona due to the colors of spring time and warm temperature. The event grants the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent past of the city such as the Gothic, the art nouveau and the contemporary architecture. Over 15 thousand people participated in the last edition of the Marathon and 20 thousand people are to be expected for 2013. The starting point is at the Avinguda María Cristina, famous for holding numerous events. The starting point is located at the beautiful riverside “Riviera del Brenta”, known by its magnificent mansions from XVIII century, in particular the impressive Villa Pisani, the first and most beautiful in Brenta. After the start, the participants follow the road that goes through little villages characterized by its great palaces in romantic construction style. The Malcontenta Ville stands out as its palace that was built in XVI century. The track continues in an extensive green area, San Giuliano’s Park, distinguished for the rustic houses and the beautiful countryside. Venice’s history is seen in the horizon crossing Liberty’s Bridge (Ponte della Libertà), which is considered for many as the most challenging part of the course, where participants are tested along 4 kilometers. Runners will pass by the canals, museums and monuments of the city. Athletes will be running over the cobblestone over passing the 14 bridges which created the Venice Marathon legend. In the port-area, the run takes place in the margin of Zattere built in 1519 with Giudecca Canal on its right. Then the runners reach Punta della Dogana which crosses Grand Canal, a few meters from Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. After crossing Piazza San Marco and Palazzo Ducale, the participants will still have 5 bridges ahead before they get to the finish line in Riva dei Sette Martiri. This is a marathon that every runner must have on his own portfolio! The departure takes place in Maratona, known by the Athenesian victory on the first Perse invasion. It is believed that the course is the same made by Pheidippides in 490 BC, who ran 40 Kilometers from the city of Maratona to Athens to announce the victory of his people against the Perse invaders. After 2502 years since the first marathon, the steps of this courageous messenger are reminded by thousands of runners. Last year the Athens Classic Marathon had more than 14 thousand participants.
