Where the wild things are

1.

Kalmar, Sweden Four areas, sprung from existing nature qualities found on site, provides a way of living in nature in an urban way where the existing character and qualities are what give the formation and design of the buildings. A narrow street, densely surrounded with buildings, suddenly opens up and lets the nature take part in the cityscape. Åkermarken (The Arable Field), Skogen (The Forest), Vassen (The Reed) and Dungen (The Grove) lies as clear strips that connects Rinkabyholm to the sea; preserved strips of nature in a close connection to dense housing areas. Different housing types make Rinkabyholm a place to live during different stages in life. The new additions attract the environmentally conscious citizen; buy locally cultivated carrots in the local store or grow them yourself on your backyard, take the bus to work or use the car pool if you need to go further. Since all new additions are built in wood, Rinkabyholm becomes the good example on how to both live and build sustainable and of how to preserve an areas characters and resources when exploiting nature.

the nature. By living with the nature as a neighbour, to use it to cultivate or to play in, you learn that it is something important to preserve and to embrace. Things as recycling, sustainable transportation and value of locally produced food become a obvious part of your life.

tions are made in tune with what exists.

To make the beautiful natural qualities found on site visible and accessible they are preserved because they clear shape. The new areas Åkermarken (The Arable Field), Skogen (The Forest),Vassen (The Reed) and Dungen (The Grove) make existing Rinkabyholm and the new development into one unit with clear connections to the sea and the shoreline. The Arable Field connects the existing housing area, across the square over the street and further southeast to the sea and the pathway along the shoreline. The Forest connects the street and the harbour from where you can take the ferry further out in the sea. The Reed stretches from the existing housing area to the sea, containing a lot of footbridges from which you reach the bird watching tower with a great view over the water area. The Grove begins at the street with a square and ends far out in the water with a bath. The stripes of nature are divided into two where new additions are carefully placed in one of them, and the nature is preserved as recreation area in the other. New buildings relate to existing nature, and the nature and its character are preserved around existing dwellings. The nature that today is a barrier between Rinkabyholm and the sea becomes the link that connects them in the future. The different nature areas are preserved for the

Building types When living in Rinkabyholm today you live in an area that is neither city nor countryside, you have a small garden across the road. Single-family houses dominate and you are quite dependent on your car, there are not so many occasions for unexpected meetings with your neighbours in your everyday life. Still, you can let your children play by them selves knowing that they are in a safe environment and you have the possibility to make small initiatives in your immediate surrounding; both things that are implemented in the new area. To live in Rinkabyholm tomorrow is to live both in nature and city; to combine the beauty and peace of the countryside with the social and vibrant city life. Different building typologies, row houses and single family houses combined with both owned and rental apartments, enables all types of family constellations to have the lifestyle that normally only is offered to them owning their own house. Here lives the old couple who moved from their house to an apartment, but still wants the advantages from living in a calm area, together with a young couple who works in town but love to cultivate and a divorced father who can’t afford to live in a house but want the children to grow up close to nature. This enriches the existing homogenous housing situation in Rinkabyholm. To create a variation in size and placement of the buildings on each plot, they vary in size and shape. The building can be placed close to the street or with nature in front of it. An apartment building can be the neighbour of a one thing in common is that they have one side towards

Development in 6 steps: The Reed and The Groove, they extend Rinkabyholm towards the water.

The darker parts show where the nature is preserved as recreation area and where buildings are not allowed.

In The Arable Field the buildings vary from small row houses, single family houses and apartment buildings, they all share common gardens in the courtyards for cultivation for those who like. By the square there are shops and other local service. In The Reed the houses are low and wide in the nature, row houses mixed with single family houses and low apartment buildings. They all have one side towards the street and one side towards the nature, a wild nature and no garden for those who like to live in contact with nature but not care for a garden of their own, you share the view and experience of the reed outside your backdoor with your neighbours.

both comfortable interior climate and detailing and material of the constructive parts of the building. Due to its role as a historical asset and the importance sustainable and local lifestyle, wood as the symbol of Rinkabyholm makes it a proud example to put Kalmar on the map in creating good living conditions in all ways, as well as it strengthens the regions tree industry and the locally produced products in the wood business.

Infrastructure By relocating the road E22, Rinkabyholm’s largest barrier towards the sea and the nature areas is removed; opportunities open up to expand the area and connect it to the sea. The road that abruptly ends Rinkabyholm today becomes a lively city street in the centre of the

houses all built in wood; all together they make Rinkabyholm a perfect example of how a sustainable lifestyle can be created by the physical structure. Five points of identity are placed in different parts of the new area; the sports centre, the recreation area, the bird watching tower, the harbour and the local food market. They are all essential for the making of an attractive area to live and work in and attract people from all over Kalmar. The sports centre and the local food market is today in the outside of the area but on their sides the area can expand in the long perspective both towards Kalmar and further south, this makes Rinkabyholm a strategic site for Kalmars expansion.

Skogen (The Forest)

In The Forest you live in a single-family house stacked on top of each other with your own entrance from the stair on the outside or from the elevator on the inside. The high building enables a high exploitation at the same time as the nature is preserved and the trees are close to the building and right outside your window.

Åkermarken (The Arable Field) In The Arable Field the former E22, now a local street stretches from inside the courtyards of the housing area and over the street and together with the buildings on both side of the street a square is created across the road. The square changes during the day, it is a market place for locally produced food at day and the place you meet your friends at a restaurant at night, a place where the small shops and a place for people to meet; a place where Kalmar begins. Create a large garden in the courtyard together with your neighbours!
