Where He Leads Me, I Will Follow I hope by now the news that I have been reappointed to another congregation has made its way through the congregation, and that we are all participating in coming to terms with what that news means for us as individuals and as a faith community. Transitions are difficult. Losing a pastor can be a wrenching experience, and the anxiety around receiving a new pastor can be difficult, too. I have some words to share about my previous transition experiences that may be reassuring. In 1994 I left the denomination that had nurtured me from my birth up to and including my 35th birthday. It was very, very difficult to leave what was familiar and comfortable behind, but circumstances made staying even more painful than the move. My family and I stepped forward in faith, and joined Hopewell United Methodist Church, which nurtured and blessed us during the years we were members. God was with us during that move, and used it to pave the way to a better future for all of us. In 1998 I declared for ministry and was appointed as the part-time pastor of a small country church in Akron, PA. Leaving Hopewell was hard and we left behind many people we loved, but moving to Akron blessed us in a great many ways. While there, I learned some of the skills needed in the pastorate and was able to attend seminary as a full time student. We made friends there who are still a part of our lives. We look back to those years with great fondness and have many wonderful memories. God was certainly with us during our service in that little church! In 2002 my seminary studies were completed, and the Bishop assigned me to a full time charge. Community UMC is a church with around 80 at worship and is located at the juncture of three school districts and three townships. It made for an interesting church calendar! Our children were young at the time and made good friends in the Akron community. Quite frankly, we didn’t want to go! But itinerancy is a part of the UMC ministry covenant, and so we packed up and moved to our new home in West Lampeter Township. The new church welcomed us with great excitement and love, and we had eight wonderful years of ministry in that community. All three of our children were able to attend and graduate from a fantastic school district, and again, God surrounded us with a caring community of wonderful people who are still in connection with us today. God is faithful if we are! Community Church was not our beloved Akron community, but we were embraced and carried there just the same. You all know how the tale unfolds from there. In 2010 my District Superintendent (D.S.) called and informed me that there was a church in Berks County that was ready for a pastoral change. There were certainly some challenges in getting here, as some of you may recall. Our house in Lancaster didn’t sell for three years, In this issue: and I don’t think the parsonage housed a dog before. But one thing was the same – the people of Calvary reached out to our family and soon made us welcome. ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS, COLLEGE STUDENTS AND PARENTS! The Board of Trustees has established the William and Beulah Eshelman Memorial Fund at the Berks County Community Foundation. This fund was established through a bequest to the church. William and Beulah were the parents of the late Judge W. Richard Eshelman and leaders in the early days of Calvary Church. In addition to providing financial support to

the church, the fund may provide educational loans to assist active members of Calvary United Methodist Church in

pursuing some form of post-secondary education. Members may be attending a 2-year or 4-year college or vocational

school either full or part time or pursuing some type of secondary education through a certification program. There is a

lifetime loan of $5,000 per individual. Repayment of the loan must begin no later than one year after completion from the educational program.

The Berks County Community Foundation is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to develop, manage and distribute funding to meet existing and emerging community needs. Through permanent endowment funds created from charitable

gifts, the Community Foundation makes grants, scholarships and loans from the earnings of the endowment fund. By keeping the principal balance of the fund intact, the Community Foundation will ensure a lasting and stable vehicle for the ongoing educational support for members of Calvary United Methodist Church.

Applications for the loan are available from the church office or can be downloaded from the Berks County Community Foundation’s website at www.bccf.org under “Find a Scholarship”. Search for the William and Beulah Eshelman Memorial

Fund. The application period will begin April 1st and the deadline to apply is June 30th. Those selected to receive loans will be notified by July 30th. All church members pursuing any form of post-secondary education are encouraged to apply.

Approval for a loan does not commit you to accepting the loan.

From the journals of Chaplain Dearstyne (Ret.)

DESTINY As I write this, I am looking at one of the photos in my World War II album. Many were taken during the months after the war ended, before I returned home from the South Pacific on January 8, 1946. That picture must have been taken in early January. It shows me wearing woolen clothing and earmuffs. It was a bright sunny day in upstate New York and I was skating on Reed’s Pond. I had looked forward to that day for three years. As I look at the photo, I see that, except for my sister who is taking the photo, I am alone. I think most teenagers who went off to war, thought they would return to pick up the loose ends of their lives as though they had never left. I was soon to learn that nothing could ever be the same. A girl I had once dated was now a registered nurse and would soon be married. Another girl was a college student in a distant state. Two other girls were already married. One was the mother of a baby girl. Boys I had grown up with were scattered far and wide across the country. Reality had transformed my familiar, predictable world into one I no longer recognized. The regimented, disciplined life I had been living for three years was poor preparation for the independence of civilian life. I had been, more or less, living in a time capsule while many of my old friends had taken on adult responsibilities in the real world. I soon realized that I needed to build a new life for myself. I had never had a full-time job. I had enlisted in the Army shortly after my eighteenth birthday. But, my father had taught me carpentry and I found a job with Duncan & Cahill contractors in Troy, NY. Ruth and I began dating soon after I returned and, within a few months, we were engaged. At Duncan & Cahill, I met a young engineer who had graduated from Cornell. When he learned that, while in the Army, I had taken two semesters of engineering at St. Bonaventure College near Olean, NY, he urged me to apply to his Alma Mater (Cornell) using benefits of the GI Bill. I was accepted for late entrance in October, 1946. Since I had not been in a classroom for nearly three years, I decided that I did not want to risk starting a difficult curriculum two months late. If I flunked, I would risk the loss of GI Bill benefits. The coming months gave me time to think very seriously about what I wanted to do with my life. It became increasingly clear that I wanted to work with people, not things. Ruth and I were married June 28th, 1947 and, in September, I began the fall semester at Houghton College in western New York, majoring in psychology with a minor in social work. For me, life became a series of surprises and unexpected outcomes. I planned to earn a graduate degree in counseling psychology. Instead, unpredictable events led to theological seminary and ordination as a Methodist minister. Memories of World War II reminded me of chaplains who had

influenced my life and helped renew my faith. After ordination, I was commissioned as an Air Force Chaplain. I loved the work. It was all that I expected, and more. I thought I was on a career path. But, it was not to be. One of our children had been braindamaged at birth. It became increasingly obvious that I could not leave Ruth with such a responsibility when I would be absent for extended periods of time. Reluctantly, I left active duty and returned to pastoral ministry. But, life continued to be unpredictable. The Soviets built the Berlin Wall. My National Guard unit was activated. During that year (61-62), a chaplain position opened in the Veterans Administration. I left active duty to begin a 23 year career as chaplain in a neuropsychiatric hospital, work that I came to love. It was as though I had been given unique preparation for the job. My years of military service, the undergraduate degree in counseling psychology and a special daughter who made me sensitive to the needs of families and individuals coping with mental illness. Daughter, Joanna’s condition was tragic, but it positively influenced my life and work and, I am sure, that of her brothers and sisters. That youngster skating on Reed’s Pond so long ago was not yet twenty-one years old in 1946. He could not have imagined the unexpecteds and unpredictables that lay ahead. Perhaps those are the wrong words, because my faith tells me that God had a hand in the confusing game from the very beginning.

A MESSAGE LEADER:

FROM

THE

LAY

One of the opportunities that the lay leader enjoys is to keep in touch with the ways that the lay members of Calvary serve the church. Let’s offer a hearty, “Well done, good and faithful servants!” to these helpers who have served long and well. Yvonne Davies has cared for the church’s outdoor sign board for over 30 years. Each week she changed the words, adding a phrase of scripture, a line of a hymn, a seasonal greeting, or a message of congratulations, welcome, or thanksgiving. Thank you for your faithfulness, Yvonne! She has passed the boxes of sign board letters to Jim Farmer. Mary Jo Hollis has chaired the altar guild for over 25 years. She has scheduled the volunteers who set each week with appropriate paraments, ensured that altar flowers were sponsored, ordered seasonal flowers and Palms, kept the candles in stock, and more. Thank you for your attention to detail, Mary Jo! She has passed the calendar to Jeanette Magerman. Communion elements have been prepared for over 12 years by the team of Doris Metz, Jackie Meiran, Janet Mohn, Beverly Pawlik, and Mary Jane Keinard. Sometimes, their husbands helped, too. They expertly acquired and prepared the elements for both worship services and at seasonal services. Thank you, team, for your important contribution to our worship! They have passed the bread knife to Jill and Joe Raber. Ken Dearstyne, Jr., has served as lay leader for more than 5 years. The lay leader keeps in touch with the congregation, encouraging people to participate in the ministries of the church, and serving as an active listener. I have recently been appointed to the position and look forward to serving with all of you. We are the church together! Carol Adams 610-777-3764 7
