NJROTC cadets are not in the military and are not in anyway obligated for military service. Leadership training is the main emphasis in NJROTC. Students wear military uniforms, march, perform color guard duties, participate in community service activities, visit military bases, visit college campuses, and host guest speakers with varying backgrounds. NJROTC also competes in various competitions across the region to include athletic, drill, air rifle, and academic competitions. Two years in NJROTC earn a student the required physical fitness and health requirements for graduation. Additionally, the NJROTC program attracts over $25,000 per year in direct support of NJROTC students. Additionally, LaGrange NJROTC is the first JROTC in Louisiana to start a Civil Air Patrol Unit which is sponsored by the Air Force. Some NJROTC cadets are given the opportunity to learn about aerospace topics and flying. Additionally, Civil Air Patrol Cadets get to fly in airplanes at no cost to students. LaGrange NJROTC and Civil Air Patrol have received funding to purchase an FAA approved flight simulator costing over $10,000. With this simulator, students can

log time towards an FAA flight certificate. Additionally, Civil Air Patrol Training prepares cadets to take the FAA Private Pilot Test and instills self discipline in its cadets. Exciting opportunities are available to LaGrange students, opportunities that are not available in most schools in Louisiana. LaGrange Civil Air Patrol also sponsors a FlyA-Teacher program designed to take teachers flying and encourage teachers to incorporate aerospace education topics into school curriculum. — Lt. Robert Null Matthew Cormier graduated from St. Joseph’s Seminary May 7th. He was a resident of Sulphur and attended D.S. Perkins during his elementary years. Linda Portie, Curriculum Coordinator at Vinton Elementary had the privilege of having Matthew in her classroom when Matthew was in second and third grades. She traveled to Covington for his graduation. The seminary is located in a secluded, wooded section of Covington and its beauty is breathtaking. The church at the Abby is located on the grounds and that is where the graduation ceremony was held. Keynote speakers included the Bishop from New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Just to have been a spectator at this solemn, beautiful ceremony in the centuries old church would have been sufficient. But, there was also a reception for all the graduates and their family and friends following the ceremony. The bountiful reception was held under the covered pavilion where the graduates, faculty, family, and friends gathered. Linda Portie has stated that she is proud of all her students; however, she knew there was something special about Matthew after meeting him the first time. — Linda Portie At College Oaks, Sandra Lanier’s second grade class received root beer floats for recognition in entering the Easter Art Coloring Contest sponsored by CSN magazine. Barbe High, Semifinalist and Finalist; and Sierra Jackson, LaGrange Senior High, Semifinalist and Finalist. Megan Baldassari, Sulphur High, received a Special Merit Scholarship from PPG. More than 1.5 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U. S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. The Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s essay and information about the Semifinalist’s participation and leadership in school and community activities. Approximately 15,000 Semifinalists advance to the Finalist level and it is from this group that all National Merit Scholarship winners are chosen. Merit Scholars designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. Three types of National Merit Scholarship awards are offered and each finalist competes for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships that are awarded on a state representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships are provided by approximately 270 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,700 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution. — Charlene Chiasson

It was conducted under the leadership of Dolores Hicks, Administrative Director of Elementary Schools, Dr. George Reado, Elementary Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and Arlene Hobaugh coordinator of the program. It was designed for the specific purpose

of providing academic assistance to overage fourth grade students in the elementary school setting. Nine students in this pilot program were from schools in Academic Assistance and were recommended by the principal of each school based on the following criteria: a student must be one or two years behind his/her required age and appropriate grade level requirements. Selection was also based upon students’ scores from multiple data sources. It began in November and ended after state testing. The program was piloted at no additional cost to the school system. It was housed at C.A.S.E.S., and students were taught by a teacher already assigned to C.A.S.E.S. All 9 students passed the 2009-2010 LEAP test administered this year. Quality Corner Quality Corner Site Visits The Continuous Improvement Compass rubric is a tool that was used to establish baseline data by individual schools during Quality site visits during January, February, and March. The rubric addressed the following areas: • School Focus on Data Folders • School and Classroom Bulletin Boards • Dashboard and GPS • Classroom Focus on Data Folders • Bonus: Evidence of Other Quality Processes Upon conclusion of each site visit, the school received an Exit Report based on student and teacher interviews and observations during classroom visits. Each school received a rating of Not Evident, Emerging, Operational, or Highly Functional. Lists of commendations as well as one to three recommendations for continuous improvement were included in the report. The data was utilized in determining professional development needs and school specific support. The graph below indicates the results of the site visits. The rubric has been revised to include specific indicators that will enable each school to move forward in its continuous improvement efforts. A new category, Stakeholder Focus on Data Folders, has been added. The new rubric will be implemented in the 2010-2011 school year. A Summer Leadership Workshop will be held the first week of June. Each school team will review the site visit rubric from 2009-2010. Then, using the new rubric, leadership teams will set goals and develop an action plan to address the goal.
