Messenger IP Video File Encapsulator/Decapsulator

14

Application: • Enables existing digital ENG/SNG products to provide a seamless IP connection to and from the news vehicle • Allows web browsing from news vehicle • Provides access to studio video and news servers • Remote talent cueing • Truck remote control

Features: The Nucomm Messenger system enables broadband IP connectivity between an ENG/OB/SNG truck and the broadcast studio. With new workflows, stories can be edited in the field and delivered to the studio over alternative networks. Using an IP network, remote cueing, remote truck control and other applications can also run between the studio and the ENG vehicle. The Nucomm Messenger can use either the Opportunistic Data Insertion (ODI) mode or the broadband mode. In ODI mode, live video is sent within available bandwidth of the MPEG encoder. In the broadband mode, nearly the entire link is dedicated to IP traffic. In this mode, the encapsulator responds automatically to the changing network conditions. IP data from the news gathering vehicle to the studio flows through the existing ENG/SNG infrastructure. The outbound IP traffic enters the Messenger IP Intelligent router and if the broadband ENG/SNG link is available, the IP traffic is encapsulated into the MPEG stream from the MPEG encoder in the ENG/SNG transmitter. The ASI stream, with IP and video data, then returns to the ENG/SNG transmitter, where it is transmitted back to the studio. If the backhaul is unavailable, a rule can be defined to reject the traffic or route it through lower speed interfaces. An ATSC receiver captures inbound IP Traffic from the studio. The MPEG transport stream then enters the Nucomm Messenger IP

IP ENG and IFB Systems

ProQ DTV IFB System IFB Solution for ENG over ATSC

15

Applications: Cost-effective, high-performance IFB communications system between broadcast studios and news vehicles, remote news bureaus and live sports event coverage

Versatile, high speed IP communications between studios and remote vehicles and locations, enabling video file transfers when used with the Nucomm Messenger IP encapsulator system

Features: • The Nucomm ProQ DTV IFB system offers a cost-effective, highperformance approach to delivering low-latency multiple channel audio IFB communications using a DTV broadcast transmission. The complete ProQ DTV IFB solution includes the ProQ LLAM (low-latency audio multiplexer) and one or more ProQ DTV IFB receivers. The ProQ LLAM is integrated into the broadcast environment, usually immediately before the STL. The ProQ system also offers an expansion system for the LLAM that simplifies the process of feeding audio cueing and remote control signals into the ProQ LLAM. Until the ProQ system, digital IFB systems have suffered from either bit inefficiency or high latency. With the ProQ system, audio latency can be as little as 80 ms, while up to 8 separate remote cueing channels can be supported within one 200 kbps data channel. Audio cueing channels with the ProQ LLAM are processed with an MPEG Layer1/Layer 2 audio encoder and multiplexed into a single 200 kbps data channel, with each IFB subchannel clearly identified for easy reception by the appropriate remote talent and crew. The output of the ProQ audio encoder is multiplexed with the air channel, creating a single DTV transport stream. The ProQ LLAM also provides a fail-safe pass-through switch that ensures that the over-the-air signal is not compromised, even if the ProQ LLAM were to fail. To facilitate reception at the ENG van, remote news bureau or other remote location, the ProQ DTV IFB receiver incorporates dual UHF/VHF silicon tuners and dual 6th generation VSB demodulators for robust diversity reception. Audio output from the ProQ receiver is on a 5-pin XLR connector--either two channels of balanced, linelevel audio, or two AES-EBU digital audio signals. The ProQ receiver provides a built-in front-panel speaker as well as a front-panel headphone jack for audio monitoring. The ASI output enables monitoring of the received broadcast signal, while Ethernet, RS-232 and GPO contacts enable data communications with the remote local. When combined with an IP video file encapsulator/decapsulator like the Nucomm Messenger, the ProQ enables full-featured IP communications and file transfers between remote locations and the studio. The ProQ DTV IFB Receiver outputs the received DTV channel's transport stream onto the DVB-ASI output, allowing ASI-based equipment to analyze or monitor the DTV signal. In addition, the ProQ DTV IFB Receiver can stream the received transport stream over an IP connection (Video over IP) to a laptop or other IP enabled device for analysis and monitoring. The Nucomm ProQ is designed for easy and rapid user configuration. Using either the menus on the front panel OLED display or the

web interface, users can easily select the DTV channel and audio program PIDs or map the IFB audio channels to the XLR outputs, internal speaker or headphones. Status information, such as RF signal level and quality, DTV signal lock, and audio levels, is available through the web interface and is updated in real-time on the front panel OLED display. The ProQ LLAM (low latency audio multiplexer) enables the ProQ system to offer both high bit efficiency and low latency in the encoding. When used as part of the ProQ digital IFB system, the ProQ LLAM makes it truly economical to implement an ATSC based IFB cueing system that has minimal impact on the ATSC transport stream payload, while also offering the low latency needed to be used in live event coverage. To keep the latency associated with the IFB system down to 80 ms requires using about 200 kbps of the transport stream. Unlike some digital IFB systems, the Nucomm ProQ LLAM multiplexes up to eight cueing channels within the system, which offers the ability to support up to eight ENG vehicles or remote locations simultaneously from the ProQ LLAM. In addition, multiple ProQ LLAM systems can be used together, providing the ability to support even more channels. Consider the alternatives for cost-effectively implementing a DTV IFB cueing system for your broadcast news operations and you’ll find the Nucomm ProQ system to offer an ideal set of features and capabilities. UltraScan DR2 Low Profile, Steerable Central Receive Antenna Systems

31

Features: • Low profile, low wind-loading

• Antenna gain, 20 dBi at 2 GHz, 30 dBi at 7 GHz, 34 dBi at 13 GHz • Single, dual and tri-band models available • 2/2.5, 6/7, 12/13, 14/15 GHz bands • New US 2 GHz, BAS relocation filter

The UltraScan DR2 is a highly ruggedized offset fed antenna enclosed in a low profile radome that minimizes space needs and wind loading. The feed is broadband covering the 2/2.5 GHz bands; a dual band model covers both the 2/2.5 GHz and 6.4/7 GHz bands.

• Selectable filters for operation at both the current and the new U.S. 2 GHz bands • 24 db gain LNA (2 GHz) with remote 24/12 db gain reduction switching on LNA • Optical encoders eliminate conventional potentiometers

The UltraScan antenna uses modern solid-state MMICs to perform RF switching in the feed, thus eliminating all electro-mechanical RF switches. To provide optimal performance, the UltraScan feed assembly includes low-noise amplifiers, solid state RF switches, RF band filter, and microstrip combiners and hybrids in an integrated RF assembly. LNA gain bypassing is provided as a standard feature to reduce receiver overloading under strong signal conditions.

adjacent to ENG central receive sites. The combination of a high dynamic range LNA and sharper filtering make the UltraScan a “bullet proof” solution to the problem of PCS interference.

In addition, the overall power requirements of the rotating system and feed assembly are lower than those of traditional systems, thereby reducing the size and weight of the interconnecting control cable. The feed design permits a full range of remote switching options with the LNA/ block downconverter mounted near the feed to minimize the loss occurred through cables.

For dual band operations, Nucomm offers an optional 7 GHz LNA/feed assembly that also uses solid-state MMIC switches and LNAs. The 7 GHz band output is fed to a frequency converter that converts the 7 GHz signal to an intermediate frequency in the 2 to 2.7 GHz range. An internal solid-state switch selects either the 2 GHz band or the converted 7 GHz band.

The UltraScan DR2 central receive antenna features a newly designed front-end, which consists of a solid state pin diodes switching unit. A new sharper response RF bandpass filter, and new high dynamic range LNA design are also employed. This design was initiated to combat the interference issues caused by PCS systems

The dual-speed rotator has been designed using proven technology for reliability, and is enclosed in a low-profile, aesthetically pleasing radome. Lightning and surge suppression is provided within the unit. The rotator and enclosure are constructed of aluminum and stainless steel, thus eliminating the possibility of corrosion.

Digital-Ready Upgrade Kit 2 and 7 GHz Central Receive System Features: • Upgrade existing 2 & 7 GHz central receive antenna systems to digital-ready • High dynamic range 2/2.5 GHz 24/14 dB LNA • Provides the required frequency accuracy for digital signals utilizing COFDM technology • Phase-locked DRO design • High stability • Low phase noise • Latest PCS/MMDS reject filter Depending on model and date manufactured current steerable antenna feeds may not be suitable for digital reception and will require replacement under the 2 GHz BAS relocation. The Digital-Ready Upgrade is a direct feed replacement for your existing antenna. This feed upgrade offers a dipole, high dynamic range LNA, quad polarity switching and a BAS filter. Current block converters normally use an oscillator and microwave mixer in their design. With normal analog FM signals, a frequency stability of 1 MHz was adequate. With digital transmissions, both the stability and frequency accuracy must be improved by an order of magnitude, and the phase noise must be decreased and controlled. Most digital modems have a capture range of 100 kHz, and require phase noise in the order of -95 dBc at 10 kHz offset. The exact

• Latest solid state switching

requirement is dictated by the modulation type employed and the loop bandwidth of the modem design. The system's upgrade option employs a “phase locked” low-noise converter that meets this criteria. Older antennas will also require a high dynamic range LNA to prevent signal compression. Unlike analog FM transmission which contains no amplitude component, digital signal does contain an amplitude component that must pass linearly through the receive system to prevent digital errors. The Digital-Ready Upgrade is available for dual-band 2/7 GHz antenna systems as a factory upgrade, or can be purchased as part of a new replacement feed for an existing antenna. Consult Nucomm for a recommended upgrade.
