Travel Tips APF (Advanced Protection Formula)

TM

Phone 352-591-0749 • 8695 NW 120th Street, Reddick, FL 32686 • www.parelli.com

Take Care… During travel and transport, some horses become stressed. This causes elevated levels of cortisol which are then retained in the body, depressing the immune system. The result… about 10 days to 2 weeks later, the horse comes down with respiratory problems: runny nose, low energy. It looks like the horse has contracted a cold but antibiotics seem to have little effect on the recovery. Occasionally, we’ve observed this problem at the Parelli Center when students trailer their horses for several days. Not all in-coming horses get sick and the horses that are already here don’t get sick. It stands to reason that this could be the effect of stress rather than a contagion.

Solution! We use a product called APF (Advanced Protection Formula), which has been tested for some years now with great results in reducing the effects of travel stress and immune suppression in horses. It originates from Russia where factory workers who constantly battled with respiratory problems (flu, colds, etc) found greater levels of immunity and a massive reduction in sickness after taking these unique herbs. The equine formula of APF has now been used in many different situations with great results. So much so, they are now feeding it to Olympic horses.

Other Tips we recommend: • A regular vitamin/mineral supplement program for your horse now to assist maintenance of the immune system before, during, and after your stay • Start with a daily dose of APF for your horse 2–4 weeks prior to travel • Discussing with your veterinarian all aspects of traveling with your horse including preparation for traveling, your horse’s stay, and your return trip home. • Check out Parelli Essentials to upgrade your horse’s digestive process to increase the benefit of nutrients from feed, supplements and pasture. Read more at www.parelli.com

“Over three years ago Pat and I had a most fascinating conversation with equine veterinarian Michael Van Noy, DVM, President of Auburn Laboratories, Inc., who developed this product. Since then we have been using APF for our tour horses—with amazing results. It costs around $60 for a 4 week treatment and in our opinion is worth the expense as it may save you a sick horse and vet bills.” — Linda Parelli

APF is a natural preventive product. The major active ingredients are: • Eleutherococcus senticosus – Siberian Ginseng (most common) or Eleuthro • Schizandra chinensis – Chinese Magnolia Vine • Rhodiola rosea – Golden Root • Echinopanax elatus – Asian Devil’s Club For best results, start giving your horse a daily dose for 2–4 weeks prior to travel (the longer the better) and keep your horse on it for the duration of your time away until you arrive back home. For more info or to order APF you may call their toll free number at: 877-661-3505 or look them up on their website at: www.auburnlabs.com, or order through Parelli Collection at: 888-293-4287 or 970-259-4714 (ask for Cammy) or check out their website at: www.parellicollection.com. Here’s to a safe and healthy journey!

Food

Bringing the Right Horse

You will be provided with three meals each day. Please notify the Parelli office if you have any special meal needs, such as vegetarian meals or food allergies. This will give us a bit of time to plan meals accordingly for you. Breakfast: 7AM–8AM Lunch: 1PM–2PM; Dinner: 7PM–8PM

Please have your horse freshly trimmed or shod before you arrive, especially if you will be here longer than a week. We do not have a farrier that does emergencies, so if your horse loses a shoe it will be up to a local farrier and his busy schedule as to when he will be able to assist you.

Computer Station-Phones

Vet Services

We have a computer and e-mail station. There are phones for your use, which will require a phone card. You will be able to purchase these in the Mercantile. Wireless internet access is available in and around the lodge.

We have a couple of excellent veterinarians in Ocala who are usually available for emergencies. Please see the Customer Coordinator for assistance.

Stallions: Please remember that you will need special written permission from Pat Parelli, in advance, if you want to bring a stallion to the Parelli Center. You also need to have passed your Level 3 before making the request. If you are coming for Course 2 or 3, your horse needs to be ride-able. These courses are not suited to green horses unless you yourself are very experienced and confident. By “ride-able” we mean your horse must be started under saddle and have had at least 20 rides with a saddle on. Please bring only one horse.

For Your Horse Your tuition includes board for one horse. Your horse is assigned a pen upon arrival. Each pen is provided with feed buckets, so please do not bring your own. Cleaning your horse’s pen daily will be your responsibility (if we have to clean it, a very large fee will be charged). Alfalfa/Timothy hay cubes are supplied for feeding along with our own natural Parelli blend grain mix. Our horses do very well on this diet. If you choose to bring your own feed, it must be in an ant-proof container. If you feel the need to provide hay for your horse, we will show you where you can do this. Hay cannot be fed in the pens as it destroys the footing. We have a specific watering program at the Parelli Center. We highly recommend that you bring your horse water or take your horse to water throughout the day instead of keeping water in the pen. This is to help you and your horse build a strong bond in a short amount of time and the difference it makes is phenomenal. However, this program is up to you. You are free to leave a full bucket of water in the pen all day if you desire.

Children and Guests Other arrangements must be made for children under 18 to stay off site during all courses and events at the Parelli Center, including meal times. Guests over 18 are welcome to eat with us and may pay $10 per meal to the chef. Guests are asked not to watch any of the class sessions.

Medical The closest hospital is 16 miles away. In an emergency dial 911.

Smoking Smoking is not permitted on the Ranch. Thank you for your consideration.

Days Off The weeks basically run Mon.–Fri. with the weekend left open. During that weekend you may be given projects to work on, and we suggest that you take a break. We’ve discovered that obsessive students need to take a break to let information soak through and to give their horses time off!

Dogs and Other Pets No pets are allowed on the ranch. Please make arrangements to board or leave your pets at home. Please do not pet Pat’s dogs. They are working dogs, and that’s a big no-no!

Entertainment While you are here, we ask that you keep newspapers, magazines, and radios to yourself, not in the lodge or common areas. We strive to create a totally focused environment for all the students and encourage you to spend your time increasing your savvy by talking with other students and taking full advantage of the facilities. We offer a complete library of Parelli material for your use while at the Center.

Mail Please have your posted mail sent to this address: Your Name, c/o Parelli, 8695 NW 120th Street, Reddick, FL 32686. It will be delivered out to the Parelli Center incoming mail box in the lodge.
