Welcome to the Huon Food Trail Producer’s e-brochure Tasmania’s Huon Trail starts just south of Hobart and covers the areas known as the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Bruny Island, Huon Valley and Far South. Our region enjoys a cool temperate climate with four distinct seasons. In general we have good rainfall that supports our magnificent old forests and our diverse agricultural base. The ‘Huon’ has always been known for its apple growing industry and as with everything, times change. Today, the Huon is becoming known for producing superb seafoods, cool climate grapes, stone and berry fruits, mushrooms, saffron, grass fed beef and still our icon – apples. Much of our produce is either organic or free range. Using the region’s excellent produce, we are now making exceptional gourmet products including cheeses, wines, chocolates, jams, breads, ciders, bush foods, fruit juices, ice creams and much more. This food trail is also about “food miles” which simply means how far food has travelled from paddock to plate and is an indication of how environmentally friendly it is. Sourcing locally grown and produced food is the simplest way of enjoying life and reducing “food miles”. Use this guide to play hunter/gatherer and experience some of the freshest, tastiest foods available on the Huon Food Trail. The Guide has been divided into 9 producer categories: fresh fruit and vegetables; wine and beverages; seafood; meats, poultry, game; dairy and cheeses; baked goods; condiments, oils, sauces, honey, jams and relishes; and, confectionary. Categories include organic choices where applicable.

Keep an eye out on roadsides along the Huon Trail for farm-gate sales of locally-grown seasonal fruit and vegetables and free-range eggs.
