Specialized Peer-Led Support Groups REbuilders is a support group that provides a confidential, safe and casual atmosphere where Rebounders can deal with stress, discouragement, self esteem, fear, etc. — all of the emotions which go along with the loss of a job. The group meets from noon until 1:30 pm after every General Meeting which is held the first Thursday of each month. A complimentary lunch is served. First Hour is intended to identify new Rebounders as quickly as possible after losing their jobs. We want all Rebounders to know they don’t have to navigate their rebound alone.

Special Events REL frequently holds free Special Events for all Rebounders, Volunteers and Sponsors. These events give Rebounders the opportunity to step away from the stress of the job search for a moment and to simply relax and enjoy themselves. Many of these events are open to families and guests of Rebounders. Events will be publicized at the General Meetings, on the website, through our Eventbrite reservation system and through email blasts you will receive after signing up through www. realestatelives.org.

Seven Things You Can Learn From A Company’s Website By Arnie Fertig Job seekers can gain loads of insight from an employer’s online presence.

company’s website will be used to make the case.

Learn about recent happenings at a company by reading its press releases. Then impress interviewers by referencing that news in person. In your effort to find the right job and advance your career, you will need to learn a lot about many potential employers. When you take the time to research companies, you’ll be able to strengthen your candidacy from what you say in you cover letter all the way through the process of gaining and evaluating offers of employment. There are many ways you can research employers, but often a company’s own website will give you the key information you need. Here are seven things job seekers can glean just by paying attention to what a company puts online for all to see: 1. Company overview. From the homepage and About Us page, you’ll see what a business or organization is all about. What are its key products and services? What kind of people or businesses are its customers? How does it distinguish itself from its competitors? 2. Available positions. Virtually every employer has a job portal on its website. It is likely to be far more up to date and accurate than job boards or aggregator sites like Indeed.

Even if you find a job posting elsewhere, it’s worth taking a few minutes to see if that position is still on the company’s own site rather than wasting your time applying for a phantom position.

3. Employer brand. In order to attract the best possible employees, companies understand that they must show why they’re great places to work. This is especially true as unemployment continues to dip and first-rate talent is harder to find. The Careers page of a

You might see employee testimonial videos that highlight one or another of a company’s attractive features, such as opportunities for engaging in meaningful work, career advancement opportunities, camaraderie or whatever else. If the company has won awards from industry groups for excellence or other positive notoriety, these things will make it a more attractive workplace. Many companies will show pictures of their workplace and give general information about the employee benefits they offer – everything from free parking to their 401(k) retirement fund and insurance benefits.

4. Events calendar. No matter what else, networking is still the primary way people find work. Even if you don’t know someone at a company, you can likely find out places where you can meet and interface with them. Company websites will tell you about job fairs, industry forums and trade shows where they will have a presence.

Learn where to rub shoulders with people you want and need in your network. Then, whenever possible, go to these places and network your way into consideration.

5. Company in the news. Companies pay a lot of money to public relations firms to get the word out about what they’re up to. News organizations cover everything from executive turnover, product launches, earnings reports and more. You will likely find links to articles about the company and its leaders on its site on the homepage, investor page and elsewhere.

Take the time to read these stories. It’s always great to ask in an interview, “I saw such-and-such about your company in the news and was intrigued. Can you tell me more about that?”

6. Leadership team. You will often find bios of C-level executives. Learn about who is at the helm of the organization. Have they been entrenched in their roles for a long time? Has the company been in trouble, and are they known as turn-around artists? Do the members of the leadership team reflect racial, cultural and other diversity? Most importantly: What is the leadership’s vision for the company’s future? 7. Financials. Any large company listed on the stock exchange will have sections of the website devoted to investors. Publicly traded companies must report certain activities to the Securities and Exchange Commission on a regular basis, including statements of their financial condition, annual reports and much more. Even if you don’t have much of a financial background, you won’t have to dig too deeply to find out if the company is profitable, what kinds of major investments it’s making and other big picture information that can indicate stability and growth – or the opposite. Of course, you don’t need to know every detail about a company before you apply, but you should know enough to show you’ve done some research and aren’t just randomly distributing your résumé. Once a dialog begins, you should go deeper and deeper into the company site. Your research will pay off in your interviews, and even more when you have to make the decision of whether or not to accept a company’s offer of employment. Happy hunting! Are You Engaged? By FIan Christie, Monster Contributing Writer

• I have one foot out the door, keeping my options open, but never acting on them.

Are You Engaged in Your Career?

• I jump from job to job or assignment to assignment without really settling or making a difference.

At times during your career, things may not go your way. You may be struggling to find a new job, or you may be dissatisfied with your current job or with the way your career is developing. When your professional expectations go unmet like this, there’s a natural tendency to disengage, to unplug. You go through the motions, but part of your mind is elsewhere, unfocused.

Why Your Head Should Be in the Game When you aren’t fully engaged, your efforts are scattered. You don’t do your best, which hurts you, your employer, your colleagues and your clients. Your personal life suffers. You’re not using your talents to their fullest. You’re wasting time and are unproductive. You aren’t making a difference. In short, you’re sabotaging your career. We all have days when our motors don’t run at full speed. That’s fine. However, you should be concerned with identifying if you are habitually disengaged, and if so, resolve to snap out of it.

• My performance barely meets expectations, or worse. • My mind wanders during my workday, and I have trouble focusing and delivering on projects and responsibilities. • I feel bested or outclassed by colleagues or customers when I’m discussing work-related things. I don’t have a lot to say. • My presentation is weak, sloppy or lacking direction. • I don’t have a plan as to what my next steps are.

Change and Engage If you answered yes to one or more of the above statements, you can take some immediate steps to correct the situation. Here are some things you can do today to get engaged: • Change your attitude. A reality check can do wonders in changing behavior.

Diagnose Yourself

• Throw yourself into your work or job search. Do your best. Immerse yourself and see what happens.

Here are some statements to test whether your head is really in the game or not:

• Identify what motivates you and see if you can inject more of those motivations into what you do.

• I am dissatisfied with my work situation, and I haven’t done anything concrete to resolve it.

• Find the good in your situation. What can you identify about your job or situation that is positive? Be thankful for what you have.

• I tend to complain, put the blame on others or have a cynical attitude.

• Identify the key success criteria for you, your employer, your colleagues and your customers. Focus on how you can be successful in the current environment.

Strategies for Lasting Change Here are some ideas to build on the change you’ve put into motion so you can turn yourself into a rousing success story. • If you make a change, do it with determination, passion and focus. • Adjust your expectations. Goals can be energizing if we actively pursue them, or a real drag on our energy when we keep them alive without making progress toward fulfilling them. Resolve to pursue those goals that mean something to you and dump the rest. • Get help. If you recognize a longstanding pattern of behavior and believe that its roots run deeper than career-management issues, seek qualified, professional help.

Special Advice for Job Seekers As a job seeker, you need to be engaged on at least two levels. Obviously, the first level is applying focused determination to the job search process. The second level is less obvious. You must demonstrate that you are fully engaged in your industry, profession or particular specialty. People who are engaged are focused and committed. Being engaged requires consistent, daily resolve to back it up. Not being engaged is self-sabotage. You need to get in the game.

Glad We Could Help! Dear REL: Greg, I hope all is well with you. I wanted to let you know that I started a new job today with a company called Helicon Property Restoration Services. It came together pretty quickly in the past week. I am being brought in to build their commercial business as they have a very successful residential business. Most importantly, I wanted to thank you for the introduction to RE Lives. Because of being there for a handful of times, I met Terry Henry who then introduced me to Joe Jones

and Bob Saxon. Joe was exceptionally helpful to me as a “Life Coach” for a few weeks and got me focused, prepped and ready for my interviews and a positive mindset which was tremendously helpful to me throughout the Helicon hiring process. Bottom line, because you invited me to a RE Lives lunch, I was able to meet these other gentlemen that led me to this new opportunity. So, THANK YOU so very much. Feel free to use this as a testimony for others, because it truly is about connecting the

dots and using ones connections. Even though I found this job on line, I don’t believe I would have landed it if it were not for Terry, Joe and Bob, again because of you. When I get settled, I want to buy you a thank you lunch. So, I’ll call soon. Best always, Bob

Dear REL: What a wonderful quote. Thank you! I often think about the people I’ve met in life and so many of them, like you, are wonderful. You have done more than you realize for the people you have gone out of your way to help since the financial crisis hit and I personally cannot thank you enough. It will be my pleasure to stay in touch and return the good will in whatever ways I can. Best regards, Janice
